These are examples of great reasons to apply for an IMDA Educational Grant – as these students did in 2017. 2018 will be the twelfth year of this program, with help extended to 43 musicians, dancers, language students and artists over the years. The applicant may use the grant in any way that furthers his or her study – help with the purchase of an instrument, tuition to a workshop or class, travel expenses – the options are endless. Previous grant recipients have included musicians, dancers, Irish language students and a costume designer, but the program is open to students of other traditional Irish arts as well.

    “The Twist”—Chubby Checker (1960) Added to the National Registry: 2012 Essay by Jim Dawson (guest post)* Chubby Checker Chubby Checker’s “The Twist” has the distinction of being the only non-seasonal American recording that reached the top of “Billboard’s” pop charts twice, separately. (Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” topped the holiday tree in 1942, 1945, and 1947). “The Twist” shot to No. 1 in 1960, fell completely off the charts, then returned over a year later like a brand new single and did it all over again. Even more remarkable was that Checker’s version was a nearly note-for- note, commissioned mimicry of the original “The Twist,” written and recorded in 1958 by R&B artist Hank Ballard and released as the B-side of a love ballad. Most remarkable of all, however, is that Chubby Checker set the whole world Twisting, from Harlem clubs to the White House to Buckingham Palace, and beyond. The Twist’s movements were so rudimentary that almost everyone, regardless of their level of coordination, could maneuver through it, usually without injuring or embarrassing themselves. Like so many rhythm and blues songs, “The Twist” had a busy pedigree going back decades. In 1912, black songwriter Perry Bradford wrote “Messin’ Around,” in which he gave instructions to a new dance called the Mess Around: “Put your hands on your hips and bend your back; stand in one spot nice and tight; and twist around with all your might.” The following year, black tunesmiths Chris Smith and Jim Burris wrote “Ballin’ the Jack” for “The Darktown Follies of 1913” at Harlem’s Lafayette Theatre, in which they elaborated on the Mess Around by telling dancers, “Twist around and twist around with all your might.” The song started a Ballin’ the Jack craze that, like nearly every new Harlem dance, moved downtown to the white ballrooms and then shimmied and shook across the country.

All gymnasts in the squad warm-up at the same time, unless the number in the squad is 9 or more, in which case the squad MAY be split into two groups for touch warm- up. The first half would touch and compete; then the second half would touch and compete. • The option to alternate competition with the touch warm-ups (staggered touch) may also be used, at the discretion of the Meet Director. b. The touch warm-up period for Floor Exercise is determined by multiplying the number of athletes in the largest squad by 30 seconds. c. No block time by team/club is allowed. 2. When the warm-up time is exceeded, a warning is given. 3. If the gymnast continues to exceed the warm-up time, the Chief Judge would deduct 0.20 from the gymnast’s average score.     PLAYING WITH WALTZ TIMING - SPIN AND TWIST By Harold and Meredith Sears The timing of a waltz measure is one, two, three, right? With a nice strong downbeat: one, two, three. But many figures flow better, feel better, and look better when you depart - just a little – from the stated timing. The standard timing of the Spin Turn is 123. In closed position usually facing reverse line of dance, the man begins left face upper-body rotation, he steps back on his left foot (L), toeing in a little to anticipate the turn, and he brings the lady forward on her right foot (R), between his feet. We pivot 1/2 to face line of dance and begin to rise through stretch in the leg and frame. On beat 2 he steps forward R (lady bk L) between the lady's feet, rising up into a hovering action onto the ball of the right foot as the lady brushes R to L, and continues the turn. This is the "spin" of the Spin Turn. On beat 3, he recovers side and back L (lady fwd R) to closed position. The standard figure turns a total of 5/8 and ends with the man facing diagonal line and wall. An Overturned Spin Turn, or simply Over Spin Turn, turns 1/4 more to face diagonal reverse and wall and can turn all the way to face reverse. Now, what about that timing? The first step is a preparatory pivot into the spin – less important. The third step is the exit into the next figure – still less important.

    Real PRofessionals? Andy Warhol, Fred Herko, and Dance Paisid Aramphongphan f all the Judson Dance Theater dancers, Andy Warhol was “absolutely fasci- nated with” Fred Herko, the relatively unknown Judsonite who jumped out Oof a window to his death in 1964.1 Prior to Herko’s untimely death, Warhol had captured his dance on film. Recently preserved and made available for public screening, Jill and Freddy Dancing (4 minutes, silent, black & white) is a gem of a short. It brings together Herko and the Village Voice dance critic and Judson Dance Theater champion Jill Johnston, showing their dancing on a New York rooftop, antici- pating the rooftop dances of Trisha Brown a decade later. From above, the camera shows the rectangular shape of their dancing space that, cordoned off with railings reminiscent of the ballet barre, is like an outdoor dance studio. The film starts with Johnston, tall and slim in a long dress, with long hair, standing on a chair close to the middle of the frame. She unwinds her arms and sways her hips in a rhythmic motion. Herko, slim, muscular, shirtless and in tights, enters from the left with a regal bearing. He dances around her, executing precise balletic turns and arresting jumps.     115 Circle Polka (Poland) Done to a lively melody accompanied by beautiful singing, the Circle Polka was created to teach the basic ordinary (zwykly) polka step to dancers of all ages. Poland literally has thousands of polka steps and variations that are unique to the folklore of its regions, but most people know these basic steps that are often done during social gatherings. I always teach this particular version to children and beginners of Polish folk dance, as it gives them a solid base for more complicated polka steps and helps them to learn a sense of direction when turning. Pronunciation: POHL-kah Music: Folk Dances from Poland, Vol. 3, Band 6, Vol. 5, Band 7. 2/4 meter Formation: Circle of individual dancers facing ctr with hands on hips. Steps & Styling: Non-couple (individual). Basic Polka step: Ordinary (zwykly) polka steps are used in this dance either in a fwd motion or while turning. Forward Polka step: (Step-together-step motion.) Step fwd on R (ct 1); step on L next to R (ct &); step on R (ct 2). Next meas done with opp ftwk. Turning Polka step: (Also a step-together-step motion but done sideways.) Facing ctr circle, step on R to R in LOD (ct 1); step on L next to R (ct &); step on R turning CW ½ turn (R shldr back) while lifting L ft to end facing out of the circle (ct 2). Continue steps using opp ftwk in LOD always turning CW. Also done in RLOD. Hand formation: Hands on hips with fingers together at the front and thumb extended around waist pointing bkwd.
