MUSIC 262: Art/Prog Rock [Brian Ward demonstrates a tune on piano] [Brian Ward]: So around this time in rock and roll we really start to see a lot of fragmentation going on, and that’s reflected in this course. The way we have this designed is so that we can go in different directions with the music, and that’s what the music did all sort of at the same time. One of the directions is what we now call art rock and also progressive rock. Now art rock and progressive rock are terms that are used loosely. A good way to describe it is art rock is rock and roll that is influenced by classical music while progressive rock is more influenced by jazz, so- but you have different elements in varying degrees of influence and in different ways. A good illustration of that is one of the first bands that I want to talk about is The Who. Now The Who were definitely a straight down the line rock and roll band, and they started like a lot of these other British bands: imitating the blues and rhythm and blues music from the United States, but The Who were very unique. They had probably the most four individualized members of any band of all time. All four members of the band, Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon, were all very, very different people coming from different backgrounds, and that reflected in their music, and they used that to their advantage quite a bit. But with The Who I think rock star first becoming an art form in the sense that they had longer forms and they used many structures that eventually became mini-operas and they eventually made a rock opera called “Tommy.” Now when they started out they were more on the cutting edge of hard rock. -

PAUL YOUNG In the middle of the 1980s, Paul Young became one of the biggest pop stars in the world, creating a body of work that endures to this day. A blend of the old school and new school, he was the epitome of someone who had worked his way up from – quite literally – the factory floor to become a superstar, scoring number one singles on both sides of the Atlantic. When he broke through in 1983, his Anthony Price besuited look was one of two iconic pop images in the UK that year. The other was David Bowie, then under his serious moonlight. Paul Young was born in the rock’n’roll era and grew up during the beat boom. Born in Luton in January 1956, he took piano lessons, was a self- taught guitarist, and as a teenager, fell under the thrall of Island Records. Young loved Free and because of them, he began listening to things around the margins, things that they listened to. He wanted to play bass like Andy Fraser and sing like Paul Rodgers. “I was always drawn towards to blues and soul.” Young recalls. “Even though Free had had a hit with ‘All Right Now’, they were a blues band, they knew they needed a pop song, so they wrote a pop song, and it was a hit. But when you look at their other stuff, they went straight back to the blues.” In 1972, aged 16, Young took up a position at the Vauxhall manufacturing plant in Luton, serving an apprenticeship just like his father before him. -

As a group on the pop-rock landscape, it’s been said that The Who occupy a rebel ground somewhere between the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, while, at the same time, proving to be innovative, iconoclastic and progressive all on their own. We can thank them for various now- standard rock affectations: the heightened level of decadence in rock (smashed guitars and exploding drum kits, among other now almost clichéd antics); making greater use of synthesizers in popular music; taking American R&B into a decidedly punk direction; and even formulating the idea of the once oxymoronic sounding “rock opera.” Almost all these elements are evident on The Who’s debut album, 1966’s “The Who Sings My Generation.” Though the band—back when they were known as The High Numbers—had a minor English hit in 1964 with the singles “I’m the Face”/”Zoot Suit,” it wouldn’t be until ’66 and the release of “My Generation” that the world got a true what’s what from The Who. “Generation,” steam- powered by its title tune and timeless lyric of “I hope I die before I get old,” “Generation” is a song cycle worthy of its inclusive name. Twelve tracks make up the album: “I Don’t Mind,” “The Good’s Gone,” “La-La-La Lies,” “Much Too Much,” “My Generation,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Please, Please, Please,” “It’s Not True,” “The Ox,” “A Legal Matter” and “Instant Party.” Allmusic.com summarizes the album appropriately: An explosive debut, and the hardest mod pop recorded by anyone. -

In 'Tommy,' new insights into Pete Townshend Chris Jones CHICAGO TRIBUNE cjon es5@chicagotribune.com JANUARY 22, 2015, 6:00 AM hen, in 1975, the movie director Ken Russell turned "Tommy," an album by The Who, into a film, W catapulting the Pinball Wizard to further glory, he made one particularly notable change: He switched the period of the rock opera from the years following World War I to the years following World War II. This necessitated changing the title of one of Pete Townshend's rock numbers ("1921" became "1951"), but the benefit was not just a more contemporary milieu (back in '75, at least) but a period that more closely charted Townshend's own life. That change was continued when "Tommy" became a Broadway musical in 1993, directed by Des McAnuff. (The stage version of "Tommy" has played the Chicago area many times over the years, including productions by the Circle Theatre and now-defunct White Horse Theatre, as well as a memorable stint for McAnuff's road show at the Auditorium Theatre in 1999.) The stage musical, adapted from what always has been a very loose plot, is set in the years after World War II, suggesting that the conflict ripped families and marriages apart. In the case of "Tommy," we see a husband and father shot down by the enemy. His wife thinks he is dead and takes another lover. When her husband returns, he violently confronts the lover, which is what sets his little boy, Tommy, off on his trajectory. Told that he saw, heard and felt nothing, he takes those instructions to heart. -

QUINCY SYMPHONY CHORUS PROGRAM NOTES British Invasion ~ March 9, 2019 Dr. Carol Mathieson Andrew Lloyd Webber relaunched musical theatre in the 1960’s in ways that welcomed electronic technology and rock music without allowing ephemeral fads to highjack well-crafted composition. And audiences responded, with younger aficionados swelling the general flock to the theatres. Tonight’s medley follows chronologically from earliest efforts with Tim Rice to turn Jesus Christ, Superstar— a scripture story recast in rock, produced as a concept album with basic plot, all the songs, and minimal dialog—into a stage show, opening in London’s West End. It was a mega-hit. Soon after came Evita about the Perón dictatorship in Argentina. Rice did not feel comfortable remolding established writing into lyrics, so for Cats, Lloyd Webber went directly to T.S. Eliot’s poetry. Song and Dance is a short musical play with lyrics by Don Black, paired with a short ballet with music Lloyd Webber wrote for his cellist brother Julien as variations on a Paganini caprice. However, Phantom of the Opera, with Charles Hart lyrics, was back to high drama. Phantom smashed attendance records in both London and New York, running for decades. Tonight’s medley opens and closes with songs from that iconic show. Nineteenth-century English musical theatre consisted of cheerful song and dance revues or badly translated, risqué French burlesques until Gilbert and Sullivan brought satirical, silly Savoy Operas to a family-friendly stage.
