Though he does not elaborate on this statement there is an implied balance in his pairing that is compelling. Re sistance literature is an established category of writing that is political in its very nature. Resilience literature as a concept in literary criticism does not yet exist, but the construct of resilience as theorized in psychological research “extends from the 1800’s to the present” and focuses on how i ndividuals and communities have adapted, survived, and even thrived despite adversity (Tusaie and Dyer 2004: 3). A theory of resistance looks at how writers have resisted the false or one -sided histories and ideologies imposed upon Native Americans. Resis tance literature seeks to critique and interrogate those ideologies. A theory of resilience identifies the ways Native American writers have adopted and adapted concepts from their own tribal cultures, and continued those concepts in their literature despi te attempts to erase that culture. This, in a sense, 9 is also resistance because it resists the attempts by the oppressors to erase or eradicate those tribal cultures; however, a theory of resilience offers a more nuanced way of looking at precisely which c oncepts have been continued in the literature and how. Resilience theory offers a more specific form of literary criticism beyond the all encompassing umbrella of “resistance,” to show how key concepts from Native American oral tradition have continued in to the present via Native American literature. Therefore, for the purposes of this study, “resistance” might be thought of as anti -colonial and “resilience” as pro -cultural. The four authors to be studied here include, Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, N ora Marks Dauenhauer, and Ofelia Zepeda. 10 CHAPTER I: INTRODUCTION Resistance and Resilience in Native American Literature In his introduction to Tribal Secrets (1995) Osage scholar Robert Warrior acknowledges the “resiliency and resistant spiri t of Native America” as evident in the literature of the Native American Renaissance (xvi). Though he does not elaborate on this statement there is an implied balance in his pairing that is compelling. As we shall see, resistance literature is an establish ed category of writing that is political in its very nature. Resilience literature as a concept in literary criticism does not yet exist, but the construct of resilience as theorized in psychological research “extends from the 1800’s to the present” and fo cuses on how individuals and communities have adapted, survived, and even thrived despite adversity (Tusaie and Dyer 2004: 3).     An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers by Julia Boyd — 105 An Examination of Native Americans in Film and Rise of Native Filmmakers Julia Boyd Media Arts and Entertainment, Concentration: Cinema Elon University Abstract This paper explored the role of Native Americans in the Hollywood film industry and their actions to estab- lish authentic representations of their population and culture in the media. Using academic literature, film analyses, and contemporary film reviews and articles, the author created a synthesis of the history of Na- tive Americans in film. The author concluded that by becoming producers, directors, and writers of their own stories, American Indians have regained control of their images and been able to combat stereotypes and the exclusion of Native Americans in the creative process. Positive social change for minority populations can be optimized when these populations are in control of their own images in film and media. I. Introduction One can use art, music, literature, television and film to trace patterns in society. Since the invention of moving images in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, film has been a particularly powerful me- dium. Films have served as escapist fantasies, allowing audiences to enter astonishing worlds and encounter wild and colorful characters. Movies have also been used to convey truths about society that are more easily digested in a fictional format. Difficult topics such as the nature of humanity, love, and war have all been explored with film as the tool that disseminates these themes into the consciousness of the masses. With the rise of mass media and popular culture came the onset of a collective consciousness that could be shared by people all over the world, rather than people of a particular culture relying on their own ancestry and specific history.

Patell The Native American novelists Leslie Marmon Silko and Sherman Alexie are two writers who ponder upon the predicament faced by all US minority cultures: how to transform themselves from marginalized cultures into emergent cultures capable of challenging and reforming the mainstream. My conception of cultural emergence here draws upon Raymond Williams’s analysis of the dynamics of modern culture, an analysis that has served as the foundation for minority discourse theory in the 1990s. Williams characterizes culture as a constant struggle for dominance in which a hegemonic mainstream— what Williams calls “the effective dominant culture” (121)—seeks to defuse the challenges posed by both residual and emergent cultural forms. According to Williams, residual culture consists of those practices that are based on the “residue of ... some previous social and cultural institution or formation,” but continue to play a role in the present (122), while emergent culture serves as the site or set of sites where “new meanings and values, new practices, new relationships and kinds of relationships are continually being created” (123). Both residual and emergent cultural forms can only be recognized and indeed conceived in relation to the dominant one: each represents a form of negotiation between the margin and the center over the right to control meanings, values, and practices. Both Silko and Alexie make use of a narrative strategy that has proven to be central to the project of producing emergent literature in late-twentieth-century America.

Stereotyping of Native Americans can be categorized under three major themes: (1) the history of Native Americans compressed and portrayed under a single period of time;(2) Native cultures interpreted through white values; and (3) the grouping of the more than 600 different Native American societies under one general category. Because of its ability to present moving images, film played a major role in perpetuating the stereotypes of the Native Americans as riding horses, screaming, killing, and scalping people. Film, like any other form of art, reflects the culture of the society and at the same time, contributes to that culture; it embodies the society's values, beliefs, and social structure and assists in transmitting culture to mass audiences. Myths and stereotypes about Native Americans are alive today because television and film, as media with mass appeal, perpetuated misconceptions.     Transmotion Vol 1, No 2 (2015) “Carried in the Arms of Standing Waves:” The Transmotional Aesthetics of Nora Marks Dauenhauer1 BILLY J. STRATTON In October 2012 Nora Marks Dauenhauer was selected for a two-year term as Alaska State Writer Laureate in recognition of her tireless efforts in preserving Tlingit language and culture, as well as her creative contributions to the state’s literary heritage. A widely anthologized author of stories, plays and poetry, Dauenhauer has published two books, The Droning Shaman (1988) and Life Woven With Song (2000). Despite these contributions to the ever-growing body of native American literary discourse her work has been overlooked by scholars of indigenous/native literature.2 The purpose of the present study is to bring attention to Dauenhauer’s significant efforts in promoting Tlingit peoplehood and cultural survivance through her writing, which also offers a unique example of transpacific discourse through its emphasis on sites of dynamic symmetry between Tlingit and Japanese Zen aesthetics. While Dauenhauer’s poesis is firmly grounded in Tlingit knowledge and experience, her creative work is also notable for the way it negotiates Tlingit cultural adaptation in response to colonial oppression and societal disruption through the inclusion of references to modern practices and technologies framed within an adaptive socio-historical context. Through literary interventions on topics such as land loss, environmental issues, and the social and political status of Tlingit people within the dominant Euro-American culture, as well as poems about specific family members, Dauenhauer merges the individual and the communal to highlight what the White Earth Nation of Anishinaabeg novelist, poet and philosopher, Gerald Vizenor, conceives as native cultural survivance.3 She demonstrates her commitment to “documenting Tlingit language and oral tradition” in her role as co-editor, along with her husband, Richard, of the acclaimed series: Classics of Tlingit Oral Literature (47).

As a long overdue reappraisal, this book places Whittier squarely within the cultural context_of his age and then sympathetically, but objectively, ana­ lyzes his poetic achievement. Leary * s easy style and skillful use of quotations freshen the well-known facts of Whittier's life. Unlike previous biographers he never loses sight of the poet while considering Whittier's varied career as editor, politician and abolitionist. One whole chapter, "The Beauty of Holi­ ness ," presents Whittier1 s artistic beliefs and stands as one of the few extended treatments of his aesthetics in this century. Also Leary is not afraid to measure Whittier Ts limitations against major poets like Whitman and Emerson, and this approach does much to highlight Whittier's poetic successes. How­ ever, the book's real contribution is its illuminating examination of Whittier's artistry: the intricate expansion of theme by structure in "Snow-Bound," the tensions created by subtle Biblical references in "Ichabod, " and the graphic blending of legend and New England background in "Skipper Ireson's Ride." Even long forgotten poems like "The Cypress-Tree of Ceylon" reveal surprising poetic qualities.
