The best advice we have is to be prepared for aftershocks. What will happen next? Many aftershocks have already occurred, mostly in the Seddon area. The aftershocks seem to be following a standard pattern and will continue to occur for months to years to come. A large main earthquake means that fairly large aftershocks are possible. Most earthquake aftershock sequences decay over time, with spikes of activity and occasional larger earthquakes. The GeoNet website (http://info.geonet.org.nz/blog/home) has forecasts of expected aftershocks. What to do?
