Saints Cyril and Methodius (826-869, 815- 885) were two brothers who were Byzantine Christian theologians and Christian missionaries. Through their work they influenced the cultural development of all Slavs, for which they received the title "Apostles to the Slavs". They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the original alphabet that they created. After their death, their disciples continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Orthodox Church as saints as well as their students. Cyril's mastery of theology and command of both Arabic and Hebrew made him eligible for his first state mission. He was sent to the Arabs to discuss the principle of the Holy Trinity with the Arab theologians, and to improve relations between the Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire. After his return to Constantinople, Cyril assumed the role of professor of philosophy at Magnaura University while his brother had by this time become a significant figure in Byzantine political and administrative affairs, and an abbot of his monastery. 2 In 862, the brothers began the work which would have given them their historical importance. In the same year Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia requested from Emperor Michael III and the Patriarch Photius to send missionaries to evangelize his Slavic subjects. In 863, they began the task of translating the Bible into the language now known as Old Church Slavonic* and travelled to Great Moravia to promote it. They enjoyed considerable success in this endeavour. However, they came into conflict with German ecclesiastics who opposed their efforts to create a specifical Slavic liturgy. -

COUNCIL FOR RESEARCH INTO SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE OF THE MACEDONIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AND ARTS MACEDONIAN CULTURE Macedonian language, culture and art have been the basic factors which have established, moulded and confirmed the national identity of the Macedonian people over the centuries. Starting from the 9th century A.D. - when the creation of the Glagolitic alphabet and the literary standard language by Ss. Cyril and Methodius, based on South- Macedonian sub-dialects. marked the fateful moment of the civilized development of the Slav peoples - the Macedonian people, particularly with the activity of St. Clement of Ohrid and his Ohrid Literary School, developed a distinct culture, confirming their unique place among the Slav peoples and among the peoples in the Balkans and in Europe in general. During the last ten centuries, the Macedonian people lived under the domination of foreign empires - the Byzantine, Bulgarian, Serbian and the Ottoman Empires. In such circumstances, even though without any state mechanism and -care, the culture of the Macedonian people developed in several directions: through literature on the one hand, which , written in Old Church Slavonic, was cherished in the monasteries and churches, and into which more and more elements of the popular dialects penetrated, and, on the other, through the oral literature which developed in a vernacular language in the bosom of the Macedonian people, becoming, by its wealth of poems, tales, legends and traditions, proverbs and riddles, one of the richest popular literatures in Europe. The second direction is Macedonian building, as seen particularly in the numerous churches and monasteries, and frescoes and icons, which, originating from Byzantine art, increasingly affirmed the authentic features of the Macedonian people and its land. -

Scratches? Scribbles? Scripture! Revealing the Unseen – 3D Scanning of Glagolitic Graffiti of the 10th Century at the Monastery of St. Naum RUTH TENSCHERT, MAX RAHRIG, RAINER DREWELLO, and SEBASTIAN KEMPGEN, University of Bamberg, Germany The Monastery of Saint Naum in Macedonia is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Ohrid region”. The area is unique not only for its architecture but also its outstanding linguistic heritage. The monastery was named after Saint Naum and founded at the end of the 9th century and is visited by many tourists every day. In the transition from the narthex to the central church, the visitor immediately notices two shiny white marble columns. These columns carry unique inscriptions/graffiti, which represent some of the earliest evidence of the Glagolitic alphabet, a precursor of the Cyrillic alphabet. During the project, previously unseen inscriptions were revealed on the columns. The huge number of tourists poses a danger to the historic surfaces of the columns, as the constant touching and rubbing of the inscriptions is causing deterioration. Therefore, there is an urgent need to image and archive the inscriptions. Using macrophotography with raking light did not work well as the columns’ curvature and shiny surface caused blurring in the images, and some of the graffiti were not visible. Therefore, a structured light scanner with a 3D point resolution of 30 µm or less was used to record the columns, to both preserve and reveal these unique graffiti. The recording of the surfaces was deliberately carried out without texture information to exclude errors caused by the shiny and discoloured marble of the columns. -

Nominalia of the Bulgarian rulers An essay by Ilia Curto Pelle Bulgaria is a country with a rich history, spanning over a millennium and a half. However, most Bulgarians are unaware of their origins. To be honest, the quantity of information involved can be overwhelming, but once someone becomes invested in it, he or she can witness a tale of the rise and fall, steppe khans and Christian emperors, saints and murderers of the three Bulgarian Empires. As delving deep in the history of Bulgaria would take volumes upon volumes of work, in this essay I have tried simply to create a list of all Bulgarian rulers we know about by using different sources. So, let’s get to it. Despite there being many theories for the origin of the Bulgars, the only one that can show a historical document supporting it is the Hunnic one. This document is the Nominalia of the Bulgarian khans, dating back to the 8th or 9th century, which mentions Avitohol/Attila the Hun as the first Bulgarian khan. However, it is not clear when the Bulgars first joined the Hunnic Empire. It is for this reason that all the Hunnic rulers we know about will also be included in this list as khans of the Bulgars. The rulers of the Bulgars and Bulgaria carry the titles of khan, knyaz, emir, elteber, president, and tsar. This list recognizes as rulers those people, who were either crowned as any of the above, were declared as such by the people, despite not having an official coronation, or had any possession of historical Bulgarian lands (in modern day Bulgaria, southern Romania, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, and northern Greece), while being of royal descent or a part of the royal family. -

Наум Охридски:27–145.55–42 Review article A THOUGHT ON THE ETHICS OF SAINT NAUM’S MIRACULOUSNESS AND ON THE NATIONAL SPIRIT Abstract Starting from the fact that it is not enough to just get rid of evil, but that the es- sence is to get away from the evil and get the evil away, and you can only do that when you start doing good, seemly to man as a temple of God - it becomes clear why and how an ethics of practical action, as is the case with St. Clement from Ohrid, grows into an ethics of spiritual shaping of the space and the people where they live. That St. Clement manages this, there is a proof in the case of St. Naum, so it should come as no surprise that in addition to being proclaimed a saint, he is more often called a "miraculous". One can become a "miraculous" when a certain group declares certain "heal- ings" as a miracle of God, or when, understanding the ethics of his teachers Cyril and Methodius, but above all Clement’s, they become the starting point for creating a space in which man will come up to what the man is doing – a spiritual space in which he will find himself opening up to the Spirit. At the same time, without violating the iden- tity of God, monastic or canonical, and opening space for building churches the walls of which will give space for anticipatory commentary on the world, but also space for those who will enter them by looking at the frescoes, the icons, listening to the word of God, come to themselves as a temple of God, but universally ethically constructed – is the result that confirms this ethics of miraculousness, the ethics of the people's spirit. -

Approaches to Sarı Saltuk from the Late Middle Ages to the Present STEFAN ROHDEWALD Justus-Liebig-University of Gießen ABSTRACT Interpretations of texts on Sarı Saltuk may serve as a central example of the entanglement of Muslim and Christian contexts in (south-)eastern Europe and the Near East. Analyzing the fifteenth- century Saltuk-nâme and reports by Evliya Çelebi from the seventeenth century, a wide extension of the area concerned, as far as Poland-Lithuania, Muscovy and Sweden, can be observed. With the change of the contents of reports from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an increasing interest in Christians participating in the veneration of sites connected to Sarı Saltuk can be remarked. Yet descriptions of a veneration of Sarı Saltuk in a non-Muslim setting remain firmly embedded in Christian contexts, complicating a transreligious interpretation of them. In today’s Turkish perspective, though, Sarı Saltuk is no longer contextualized in a manner encompassing Russia and Poland, too, but much more in a context focusing on and affirming national Turkish Anatolian or nationalized post-Ottoman contents in the Balkans. -
