We receive that as 12-year-old boys. We go through those early ranks of the lesser priesthood--a deacon, a teacher, and then a priest--learning little by little, here a little and there a little, growing in knowledge and wisdom. That little testimony that you start out with begins to grow, and you see it magnifying and you see it building in a way that is understandable to you.

These resolutions are intended to be in harmony with the governmental law of the Restored Church established by Joseph Smith Jr. and the Reorganized Church by Joseph Smith III. These resolutions are predicated on the Inspired Version of the Bible, The Book of Mormon and the latter day revelations of Joseph Smith rJ . and Joseph Smith III as found in the Doctrine and Covenants and includes any subsequent revelations in harmony there- with. Doctrine and Covenants 85:9b-10a “And unto every kingdom is given a law; and unto every law there are certain bounds also, and conditions. All beings who abide not in those conditions, are not justified; for intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light.” Resolutions that are currently operative are included in the first section. An appendix includes resolutions where the action for the conference has been concluded or where the original resolution has been superceded by a fol- lowing resolultion.   • Statement to the Branches
    Dear Independent Restoration Branch Members and Priesthood, There has been much confusion and misrepresentation concerning the purpose of the Conference of Restoration, and its intent to organize the church. To be clear, the CRE’s purpose and intent is not to organize or reorganize the church. While some leaders in the CRE in the past have made movements towards this, it has been consistently rejected by the elders meeting in conference. The overall purpose of the CRE established in 1993 remains the same today; To bring solidarity to a growing number of Restoration Branches--and Latter Day Saints in general--during this period of disruption and fragmentation. (Source: Conference “Operating Guidelines” accepted 1996) The scope of this purpose is focused on offering ministry and support to any and all restoration branches and saints within the restoration branch movement that desire that support. The Conference is not the Church, but a gathering of the Melchisedec Priesthood to share in testimony, prayer, legislation, and preparation to return to our branches better equipped and unified to perform our duties to minister to our brothers and sisters in Christ. Without going into detail, there is growing evidence that the Restoration Branch movement within the US is experiencing loss of branches and members through attrition, fractions and other factors. It is in a general decline in terms of its effectiveness to offer ministry within, and out of the Church. While there is no question that God is in control and will accomplish the purposes of His church, the question remains, are we doing all we can to assist with the work? As such, the coming together of a significant number of the Restoration branches for the purpose of conferring with one another to seek God’s guidance on how to become more unified and engage with each other to assist with the work, is needed, and is something the CRE would support.

    Is Joseph Smith Relevant to the Community of Christ? Roger D. Launius I n the spring of 2005 Newell Bringhurst asked me to participate in a ses- sion of the Mormon History Association's annual meeting. Because it was the bicentennial of J o s e p h Smith's birth and we were meeting in Vermont, his birth state, our session was titled "In Pursuit of the Elusive Joseph Smith." He asked each panelist to consider the process of investigation and interpretation that has been made over the past forty years in terms of the most significant works produced, what significant areas of Joseph Smith's life remained to be explored, and whether a reasonably "definitive por- trait" of Joseph Smith is more possible today than it was forty years ago. I agreed to participate in this session, along with four senior scholars in Mor- mon studies, D. Michael Quinn, Glen M. Leonard, Dan Vogel, and Grant Underwood. The session proved both stimulating and provocative, and hopefully useful to the audience in attendance. The following essay is a slightly revised draft of my remarks. I spoke as a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints/Community of Christ. As a result, I had a decidedly dif- ferent perspective on Joseph Smith than my co-panelists. In addition, with the peculiarities of the history of my faith community, Joseph Smith Jr. has enjoyed a place in this religious tradition strikingly different from that he has attained among the Utah-based Latter-day Saints. Without question, he is much less revered and less legendary than among the Lat- ter-day Saints, for whom Joseph Smith is significant, not just for his life but for his religious innovations.
