M Sugathan, Trainer,Horticorp, Thiruvananthapuram Venue: Auditorium Date: 01-02 January 2016 A One day Wokshop on Apiculture was organised by the department of botany on 01 -02 January 2016 in the college auditorium. Principal Fr. Dr. Vincent Joseph, delivered the presidential address. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac, introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. Mr. T. M. Sugathan stressed the importance of bee to man and nature, technicalities involved in bee keeping, various products isolated from bee culturing and its medicinal value and scope in the economic growth of people. Emphasis was on the use of apiculture as a mode of income in rural area. He also described the different schemes of Government that provide subsidy to the bee keepers. A total of 64 students from Botany and Zoology Departments attended the meeting. Ms. Chithra Jose extended the vote of thanks. 3 1.2. Seminar on Apiculture and uses of honey and Bee culture Mr. T K Ravidran and Mr.Suguthan Venue: Auditorium Date: 20/2/16 Apiculture is perceived as a hobby but often resilient livelihood – one that keeps people out of poverty. In rural communities where access to income is limited, small-scale beekeeping can contribute significantly to livelihood security. Apiculture and related trades tends to be underplayed in both policy and planning. In order to overcome the dearth of talented youngsters and encourage the students to take up apiculture as a hobby first, a seminar was organised on the topic by the department of Botany. The meeting commenced by evoking the name of god. Dr. Sr. Tessy Joseph welcomed the gathering. Principal Fr. Dr. Vincent Joseph delivered the presidential address and shared his views on bee culture and their importance. Prof.Jose Karikunnel felicitated the gathering. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. Mr.Suguthan and Mr.Ravindran shared their expertise in beekeeping with the gathering. Mr.Ravindran demonstrated basic bee handing techniques with the students and also shared with the gathering various important uses of honey and other bee products. Importance of bee to man and nature is immense. 4 Emphasis was on the use of apiculture as a mode of income in rural area. Different schemes by government that provide subsidy to the bee keepers were also described. A total of 110 students attended the meeting. The participants included under graduate students of the department. Students from Zoology and faculty members from other department were also in attendance. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac extended the vote of thanks to the gathering. 1.3. Invited Talk on Apiculture for Rural livelihood Mr. Benny Daniel, Programme Manager, Horticorp, Thiruvananthapuram Venue: Auditorium Date: 15/03/2016 Apiculture is an important art because it provides bees with a safe place to work and live. Since bees pollinate many of our food sources, it's important to keep the bee population healthy. Additionally, apiculture provides an environment in which to study bee habitat and behavior. The department of botany conducts workshops and training programs on apiculture to promote this art both as hobby as means to livelihood. 5 The meeting commenced by evoking the name of god. Dr. Sr. Tessy Joseph welcomed the gathering. Principal Fr. Dr. Vincent Joseph, Nirmala College delivered the presidential address and stressed upon the importance of having a career goal. Ms. Alka Nasser introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. My Benny Daneil stressed the importance of bee to man and nature, technicalities involved in bee keeping, various products isolated from bee culturing and advantages and methods of using honey and its derivatives. Emphasis was on the use of apiculture as a mode of income in rural area. A total of 108 students attended the meeting. The participants included under graduate students of the department. Students from Zoology and faculty members from other departments were also in attendance. Ms. Chithra Jose extended the vote of thanks to the gathering. 6 1.4. Apiculture and Apitherapy Mr. Benny Daniel, Programme Manager Horticorp, Thiruvananthapuram Venue: Audio Visual Hall Date: 13/09/2017 Apiculture is the scientific method of rearing honey bees. Traditional medicine therapies are historically used worldwide for disease prevention and treatment purposes. Apitherapy is part of the traditional medicine based on bee product use. Apitherapy is an alternative medicine that uses products such as honey, pollen, bee venom etc. In order to make students acquainted with this industry and alternative therapy a seminar was organized by the Department of Botany. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. She also explained the gathering the advantages of having knowledge in an alternative medicine. The speaker Mr Benny Daneil from Horticorp, Trivandrum, mentioned about the advantages and methods of using honey and its derivatives. Mr. Benny explained different medicinal properties and uses of medicinal plants. The speaker also explained to the students about the possible entrepreneurial value of the venture. He stressed that this has a possibility of a vocation for the 7 students with proper training. The session was followed with discussion where the entire participants asked their doubts about various ailments. A total of 124 students attended the meeting. The under graduate students of the department of botany and zoology were benefitted from the programme. 1.5. Apiculture Training Resource person: Mr. T K Ravindran and Mr.Sugathan Venue: Audio visual Hall Date: 16/11/2017 The meeting stared by a silent prayer. Dr. Sr. Tessy Joseph welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. T M Joseph, Nirmala College delivered the presidential address. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. Mr. T. K. Raveendran,point out the importance of bee to man and nature and explained the technicalities involved in bee keeping. Mr. Sugathan explained different medicinal use of honey and demonstrated the method of fogging and isolation of honey. A total of 86 students were attended the meeting. Sugathan (Trainer, Horticorp) Venue: Audio visual Hall Date: 18/01/2018 A one day workshop was organised by the Department of Botany on 18 January 2018. Dr. Sr. Tessy Joseph welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr. T M Joseph, delivered the presidential address and congratulated the department on its academic achievements over the years. Mr. Geordy Varghese (President, Avoly Gramapanchatyath) inaugurated the workshop followed by a keynote address by Rev. Fr. Francis Kannadan. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac introduced the speaker and laid down the platform for the speaker. Mr. T. M Sugathan, stressed the importance of bee to man and nature and technicalities involved in bee keeping The session preceded with a very long discussion where all participants asked their doubts about bee keeping, harvesting of honey and uses of honey.A total of 133 students attended the meeting including the students and teachers from Dept. Zoology. Mr. T. K. Ravindran (Secretary, KODS, Udumbannoor) extended the vote of thanks to the gathering. 9 2. MUSHROOM CULTIVATION 2.1. Two day workshop on Mushroom Cultivation Resource person: Dr. A.V Mathew (Asso.Professor (Rtd), Kerala Agricultural University, Kumarakam) Date: 07 and 08 July 2015 Venue: Auditorium The meeting started with a silent prayer. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac welcomed the gathering and talked about the significance of the workshop. Dr. A.V Mathew (Asso. Professor (Rtd), Kerala Agricultural University, Kumarakam) talked about the importance of mushroom, its medicinal and food value and its economic importance. Discussion was also done about the value added products from mushroom. On the second day, the class was focused on the demonstration method of mushroom cultivation and gave hands-on training to students randomly. A total of 87 students participated in the seminar. Dr.(Sr.)Tessy Joseph, extended the vote of thanks to the gathering. 10 2.2. One day workshop on Mushroom Cultivation Resource person: Dr. Tessy Joseph Date: 10 October 2017 Venue: Auditorium The meeting started with a silent prayer. Ms. Jaiby Cyriac welcomed the gathering and introduces the topic mushroom cultivation.Dr.(Sr.) Tessy joseph,delivered a lecture on mushroom cultivation methods and demonstrated the procedure of mushroom cultivation by students of third year degree students, Mr.Manu and Ms. Sreekutty. A total of 86 students attended the meeting. Dr. Rashmi T R extended the vote of thanks to the gathering. 2.3. Two day workshop on Mushroom Cultivation Resource person: Mr. Sreekumar Date: 12 – 13 October 2017 Venue: Auditorium The meeting started with a silent prayer. Dr. (Sr.) Tessy Joseph welcomed the gathering and introduced the topic mushroom cultivation and also introduced the speaker. Resource person of the seminar, Mr. Sreekumar led a theory class on mushroom cultivation methods and explained the procedure that followed in mushroom spawn production. He explained the method of media preparation and explant preparation for the in vitro culture. On the second day, he demonstrated the method of spawn production in mushroom lab.
