Hey, folks, I have a special treat for you guys. AD&D Dragonlance game designers Colin McComb and Tim Beach have agreed to join us for a Q&A session! Colin was a designer for the Tales of the Lance boxed set, as well as Knight's Sword, Taladas: the Minotaurs, and Unsung Heroes. You can see his various RPG credits here . Colin, tell us about the Tales of the Lance boxed set. What brought it about? Was it challenging writing a new sourcebook for Dragonlance? 3. What were the design goals of Tales of the Lance? 4. THE LOST CHRONICLES VOLUME THREE Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman Astinus, Chronicler of the History of Krynn, writes: On the Twenty-sixth Day of the Month of Mishamont, Year 352 AC, in the city of Neraka, the Temple of Takhisis falls. The Dragon Queen is banished from the world. Her armies go down to defeat. Much of the credit for this victory is given to the Heroes of the Lance, who fought valiantly for the Forces of Light. History should note, however, that the Light would have been doomed to failure if not for one man who chose to walk in Darkness. PROLOGUE wo legends of Krynn are essential to the understanding of the plot. Many variations of these legends can be found. Every bard tells them somewhat differently. We have chosen these versions as being the closest to what actually occurred, though, as with most legends, the truth of the matter will likely never be known. Excerpts from “A Child’s Garden of Tales of Krynn,” translated from the Elvish by Quivalen Soth: The Story of Berem and Jasla A Tale of Love and Sacrifice Long ago, at the end of the Second Dragon War, the valiant knight, Huma Dragonsbane, drove Queen Takhisis into the Abyss. Races of Ansalon 5e Conversion By Timothy Shiflet, “Aelfwyn” on the Forums What follows is a tool to help you convert the statistics found in the 3e Dragonlance Supplement Races of Ansalon to 5th Edition. I make a lot of references to the Player’s Handbook when I can. Much of what WotC has put together in this edition will translate directly to Dragonlance. Feel free to offer comments and suggestions on how to improve this document. It continues to be a work in progress. Dwarves Unless otherwise noted, all dwarves use the racial features for dwarves found on page 20 of the Player’s Handbook. Hill Dwarf (Dwarf Subrace) Hill dwarves use the same racial features for hills dwarves found on page 20 of the Player’s Handbook. Hill dwarves are comprised of the Neidar and Klar clans. Mountain Dwarf (Dwarf Subrace) Mountain dwarves use the same racial features for mountain dwarves found on page 20 of the Player’s Handbook. Mountain dwarves comprise the Hylar and Daewar clans. Dark Dwarf (Dwarf Subrace) Dark dwarves use the following racial features in addition to the Dwarf racial features found in the Player’s Handbook. Dark Dwarves are comprised of three different dwarven clans: Daergar, Theiwar, and Zhakar. Ability Score Increase. You gain a +1 racial bonus to your Dexterity. Superior Darkvision. You have darkvision up to 120 feet. Sunlight Sensitivity. You have disadvantage on attack rolls and wisdom (perception) checks when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight. -

Here’s a path. How strange. All the times we’ve been hunting in these woods and we’ve never seen it.” “It’s not so strange. The fire burned off some of the brush, that’s all. Probably just an animal trail.” “Let’s follow it. If it is an animal trail, maybe we’ll find a deer. We’ve been hunting all day with nothing to show for it. I hate to go home empty-handed.” Without waiting for my reply, she turns onto the trail. Shrugging, I follow her. It is pleasant being outdoors today, the first warm day after the bitter chill of winter. The sun is warm on my neck and shoulders. Walking through the fire-ravaged woods is easy. No vines to snag you. No brush to tear at your clothing. Lightning, probably that thunderstorm which struck late last fall. But we walk for a long time and finally I begin to grow weary. She is wrong—this is no animal trail. It is a man-made path and an old one at that. We’re not likely to find any game. Just the same as it’s been all day. The fire, then the hard winter: The animals dead or gone. There’ll be no fresh meat tonight. -

THE LOST CHRONICLES VOLUME ONE Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman PROLOGUE tanding over the bloody body of the fallen Dragon Highlord Verminaard, the aurak dra- conian, Dray-yan, saw his destiny flare before him. The brilliant flash hit him with the force of a comet falling from the sky, burning his blood and sending a tingling sensation throughout his scaly body down to his clawed fingers. After the initial burst, a cascade of more ideas followed, showering down on him. His entire plan formed in seconds. Dray-yan whipped off his ornate cloak and dropped it over the body of the Dragon Highlord, hiding the corpse and the large pool of blood beneath it from view. The aurak draconian was panicked, or so it must appear to those watching. Shouting furiously for help, he grabbed several baaz (draconians of lowly stature, notable for their obtuse gullibility) and ordered them to fetch a litter. 3 The Lost Chronicles “Make haste! Lord Verminaard is grievously wounded! We must carry Lord Verminaard to his chambers! Swiftly! Swiftly, before his lordship succumbs to his wounds.” Fortunately for Dray-yan, the situation inside the for- tress of Pax Tharkas was chaotic: escaping slaves, two red dragons battling each other, the sudden thunderous fall of tons of rocks blocking the pass and crushing a vast number of soldiers. No one was paying any atten- tion to the fallen Highlord being carried inside the fortress or to the aurak who was accompanying him. When Verminaard’s corpse was safely inside his chambers, Dray-yan shut the doors, posted the baaz draconians who had carried the litter outside as guards, and gave orders that no one was to enter. -

Centuries of hatred and misunderstanding between the hill dwarves and their mountain cousins poured red upon the plains that day. Vic- tory became meaningless—an objective no one sought. To avenge wrongs committed long ago by grandfathers long since dead was the aim of both sides. To kill and kill and kill again—this was the Dwarfgate War. True to his word, the dwarven hero, Kharas, fought for his King Beneath the Mountain. Clean-shaven, his beard sacri- ficed to shame that he must fight those he called kin, Kharas was at the vanguard of the army, weeping even as he killed. But as he fought, he suddenly came to see that the word vic- tory had become twisted to mean annihilation. He saw the standards of both armies fall, lying trampled and forgotten upon the bloody plain as the madness of revenge engulfed both armies in a fearsome red wave. And when he saw that no matter who won there would be no victor, Kharas threw down his Hammer—the Hammer forged with the help of Reorx, god of the dwarves—and left the field. Many were the voices that shrieked “coward.” If Kharas heard, he paid them no heed. -

You can find me Canlocu at [email protected] The Glorious Empire A Travelers Guide to Ancient Istar By John Grubber Tucuri Citizens The text included here is unofficial, and is based on the Dragonlance game and fiction world, wholly owned by Wizards of the Coast, Inc. Its origins lie in an email from Chris Pierson, one of my fellow Dragonlance authors (and fellow Canadian) searching for information about Istar for a trilogy he was writing. This series of books would eventually become 'The Kingpriest Trilogy', published from 2001-2004 (Chosen of the Gods, Divine Hammer and Sacred Fire). For a fiction world nearing 20 years old, there was a great dearth of information about the greatest empire in its history. After speaking with Chris, I set about to fix this. Readers familiar with the trilogy will recognize many things in these pages- though there are many changes from the world of the novels as well. This is a natural part of the fiction writing process- some things worked, others did not. -

The Blue Lady receives a shock. ate autumn and the leaves, their colors once bold and defiant, were dead, their brittle brown corpses scattered by the winds to lie upon the ground, waiting to be mercifully buried beneath the coming winter snows. Winter was almost upon Ansalon, and with it would come the end of the campaign season. Takhisis’s forces under the leadership of Emperor Ariakas occupied much of Ansalon—from Nordmaar in the west to Kalaman in the east, Goodlund in the north to Abanasinia in the south. He had plans for conquering the rest of Ansalon, and Queen Takhisis was impatient for him to act on those plans. She wanted him to push on with the war, but she was told this was not possible. Armies cannot march on snow-choked roads. Supply wagons tumble down ice-rimed cliffs or get bogged down on rain-wet trails. Better to wait until spring. Winter was a time to 16 Dragons of the Highlord Skies hunker down and rest and heal the wounds of autumn’s battles. Her armies would emerge in the spring, strong and rejuvenated. Ariakas assured her, however, that just because her soldiers were not marching, the war was still being waged. Dark and secret schemes and plots were in the works. Once Takhisis heard this, she felt better. The dragonarmy’s soldiers, pleased with their recent victories, occupied the conquered towns and cities, lived in the comfort and warmth of captured castles, and enjoyed the spoils of war. -

Few mages did, Hin those days, the days before the great and terrible War of the Lance spilled out of its cauldron like boiling oil and scalded the countryside. In those days, just fifteen or so years before the war, the fire beneath the pot had been lit, the Dark Queen and her minions had struck the sparks that would start the blaze. The oil was cool, black, and sluggish in the cauldron. But at the bottom, the oil was beginning to simmer. Most people on Ansalon would never see the cauldron, much less the bubbling oil inside, until it was poured on their heads, along with dragonfire and the countless other horrors of war. At this time of relative peace, the majority of people living on Ansalon never looked up, never looked from side to side to see what was going on in the world around them. Instead, they gazed at their own feet, plodding through the dusty day, and if they ever lifted their heads, it was usually to see if it was likely to rain and spoil their picnic. A few felt the heat of the newly kindled fire. A few had been watching closely the turgid black liquid in the cauldron. Now they could see that it was starting to simmer. These few were uneasy. These few began to make plans. The wizard’s name was Antimodes. -
