German modernist novels simulate the mind and expose the indistinct limits of that simulation. Simulation is understood in this study as defined by Jean Baudrillard in Simulacra and Simulation. The novels discussed in this work include Thomas Mann’s Der Zauberberg; Hermann Broch’s Die Schlafwandler; Alfred Döblin’s Berlin Alexanderplatz: Die Geschichte von Franz Biberkopf; and, in the conclusion, Irmgard Keun’s Das Kunstseidene Mädchen is offered as a field of future inquiry. These primary sources disclose at least three aspects of the mind that are resistant to discrete articulation; that is, the uploading or extraction of the mind into a foreign context. A fourth is proposed, but only provisionally, in the conclusion of this work. The aspects resistant to uploading are defined and discussed as situatedness, plurality, and adaptability to ambiguity. Each of these aspects relates to one of the three steps of mind- uploading summarized in Nick Bostrom’s treatment of the subject. -

APRIL 2015 i Abstract Mass Culture and Individuality in Hermann Broch’s Late Works Janet Pearson This thesis explores Hermann Broch’s thought regarding the relationship between the individual and the mass, in an age of mass-culture. Broch, an Austrian-Jewish intellectual, who emigrated to America in 1938, discussed ideas upon this theme in theoretical essays, including a theory of mass hysteria (Massenwahntheorie) as well as his fictional The Death of Virgil (Der Tod des Vergil). In the study, the analysis of his theoretical work shows that Broch’s views regarding the masses differ from those of other theorists contemporary to him (Le Bon, Freud and Canetti), in that they are closely linked to his theory of value. It also establishes that his ideas about individuality reach back to the earliest philosophers, and that he perceived this dimension of human existence to be changing, through the development of ‘ego- consciousness’. Building upon this, the textual analysis of the Virgil demonstrates that Broch finds similarities between his own era and the age of Augustus, but also indicates that the concept of individuality portrayed in the work goes beyond that discussed in his theoretical writing and points towards a new role for art in the post-industrial age. -

Lambert III: In Search of Lost Experience: Hermann Broch, Robert Musil, and the Novels of Interwar Vienna (Under the direction of Dr. Richard Langston) Characterized by themes of negation, fragmentation, and destruction, the novels of interwar Vienna are canonically read as a testament to the social and political shifts that reshaped Central Europe after the turn of the twentieth century—the upheaval of the fin-de-siècle, the devastation of WWI, and the fall of the monarchies. These canonical readings deny the modernist novel any sort of productive capacity. My dissertation, In Search of Lost Experience: Hermann Broch, Robert Musil, and the Novels of Interwar Vienna delivers a corrective to conventional understandings of the late modernist novel by pushing beyond this lament of crisis. In the Viennese interwar novels of Hermann Broch and Robert Musil, I locate a deeper agenda in the late modernist novel—the resuscitation of experience—which evidences the pinnacle of another Viennese modernism located around 1930. My dissertation examines the Musil’s Die Verwirrungen des Zöglings Törleß (1906) and Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften (1930/32) and Broch’s Die Schlafwandler (1930) and Die unbekannte Größe (1932). -

WITHHELD MINDS: PARA-NOVELISTIC FORM AND THE AESTHETICS OF EVASION IN AMERICAN FICTION, 1840-1930 by Elizabeth Brogden A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland January, 2016 ©2016 Elizabeth Brogden All Rights Reserved {Abstract} My dissertation provides an original account of the significance of recessive and withdrawn character in a series of canonical nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century American fictions. In classical studies of the novel such as Erich Auerbach’s Mimesis, Ian Watt’s The Rise of the Novel, Wayne Booth’s The Rhetoric of Fiction, and Dorrit Cohn’s Transparent Minds, as well as in more recent work by partisans of the Ethical Turn in narrative studies, the novel’s special capacity to make available to its readers the private experiences of imaginary characters has been crucial to accounts of why, and to what end, we read fiction. My dissertation seeks to contribute to previous understandings of the transatlantic phenomenology of reading and the enterprise of the novel by examining a preoccupation with central figures who shrink from or foil diegetic and readerly attentions. I argue that the fatigue, frustration, apologia, and wistfulness that define the encounter between narratorial presence and protagonist in a trans-generic set of texts by Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Henry James, and Nella Larsen index anxieties concomitant to the “enchantment of interiority,” as Thomas Pavel puts it, with which the nineteenth-century novel has been credited. Moreover, these texts’ shared animating dynamic of unfulfilled expectation and thwarted desire, akin to what Lauren Berlant calls “cruel optimism,” presents alternative edifications to those by which the value of our investments in rich interiority has tended to be gauged. -

Dorrit Cohn Was Spread Upon the Permanent Records of the Faculty
At a meeting of the FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES on April 2, 2013, the following tribute to the life and service of the late Dorrit Cohn was spread upon the permanent records of the Faculty. DORRIT COHN BORN: August 9, 1924 DIED: March 10, 2012 Dorrit Cohn, internationally recognized as a major literary theorist and one of the first women to be appointed to tenure at Harvard (she joined the Harvard Faculty in 1971), was born Dorrit Claire Zucker in Vienna, Austria, the younger daughter in a prosperous, assimilated Jewish family. Her father, Herbert Zucker, owned a hat factory in a small town in Czechoslovakia, where the family often spent summer vacations. Her mother, née Hirsch, belonged to a family that pioneered the manufacture of bentwood furniture in the same town. Dorrit grew up with the cultural and educational privileges of her class: she studied music, was fluent in French, and loved theater and opera. This comfortable life came to an abrupt end in March 1938, when Hitler’s troops marched into Austria and annexed it to Nazi Germany. The Zucker family had the good fortune to leave the country just before the Anschluß. The following year, after temporary sojourns in Zurich and Paris, they arrived in New York, where Dorrit was enrolled in the Lycée Français and obtained her baccalaureate. In 1941 Dorrit was admitted to Radcliffe College, graduating four years later with a major in physics. She liked to tell the story of how she switched from physics to literature. The decision came to her like a revelation in her senior year, after reading Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain while recuperating from an illness.
