The television channel targets the urban youth and Chinese audience demographics. 8TV's line up consists of dramas, sitcoms, and reality shows either produced in Malaysia or imported from other countries, mainly in the English and Chinese languages. 8TV broadcasts with the concept of "one station, two channels" in two languages shifts: 8TV in English and 八度空间 (pinyin: Bādù Kōngjiān) in Chinese. 8TV is also available on Astro channel 708, and through channel 108 on ABNXcess and HyppTV. Contents. History. 8TV was launched on 1 July 1995 as MetroVision Channel 8 . It was managed by City Television Sdn Bhd, part of the Melewar Group (controlled by the Negeri Sembilan royal family) and broadcasts from Shah Alam. It was first available only in Klang Valley, Seremban, parts of Pahang and Malacca, but later expanded to Kedah and Johor, thus allowing Singaporean viewers to access it. Viewers were required to install fish-bone antennas to receive this channel. [6] MetroVision's logo resembled the infinity sign - which is the number 8 rotated 90 degrees. [7] Nevertheless, Malaysian viewers name it as TV4 as it was the fourth free-to-air television channel. It was first broadcast in Malay language with original transmission hours from 9am to midnight. Resulting from the Asian financial crisis and intense competition from other channels (especially ntv7 which launched in 1998), MetroVision quietly closed on 1 November 1999. The operator promised to re-open the channel in March 2000 after a supposed "signal upgrade" but it failed to materialise. [8] Programmes broadcast. The following are programmes currently or previously broadcast on 8TV. Although English, Malay, and Chinese languages are spoken in the channel, only Mandarin Chinese is used in all of its news broadcasts. There was also a short-lived Malay news broadcast that was available in the channel's early years. TV series that had been broadcast may be repeated on the channel a year or two later, with the exception of those produced by TVB. According to an announcement by Tonton - Media Prima's online portal service - a programme reschedule was implemented on 1 April 2016, with almost all programmes shown were Chinese on Saturdays to Tuesdays, while English programmes retain their time slots as usual on Wednesdays to Fridays, after 8TV Express. The rescheduling also includes a 3-hour morning home shopping block brought in part by Korean conglomerate CJ Group titled CJ Wow Shop which had also been introduced across other Media Prima channels, some more affected by the changes (especially NTV7 and TV9). However, this block has attract huge criticism on social media as a large part of daytime schedule has been replaced by CJ Wow Shop, which these slots had been previously running mostly reruns, religious programming and kids programming. [9] [10] The programme was initially broadcast in Malay on the channel like its sister channel before being broadcast in Mandarin beginning 8 January 2017 onwards. [11] Foreign programmes. These are programmes currently or previously broadcast during the 8TV English period, mostly at night, especially midnight or early in the morning. 10 Things I Hate About You 24 The 100 2 Broke Girls 8 Simple Rules Action Zone Alias American Chopper American Idol America's Got Talent America's Next Top Model The Apprentice Arrested Development Ashley Banjo's Secret Street Crew The Bachelor The Bachelorette Battleground Earth Battlestar Galactica Baywatch The Biggest Loser The Buried Life Burn Notice Caramba! • The Rise of Chinese Science Fiction 1
A RESPONSE TO AN ‘ALIEN INVASION’: THE RISE OF CHINESE SCIENCE FICTION LOÏC ALOISIO (Aix-Marseille University) 1. Historical Context During the late Qing era, Chinese culture was confronted in a brutal way by belligerent Western nations, some of which were technologically far more advanced than expected. During this period, China was the home of many conflicts and collided with Western and Japanese powers that politically and financially weakened the imperial power. China, which at that time considered itself the center of the world and ‘the Empire under the sky, surrounded by barbarians’, was in for a rude awakening. The numerous humiliations it suffered and the distress caused by domestic disturbances, in addition to foreign invasions, were the factors which triggered the several political, cultural and literary reforms that took place in the country thereafter. This is discussed in depth by Isaacson who states: “In China, the crisis of consciousness was compounded by a pervasive understanding that internal cultural failings were as much to blame for the inability to resist semi-colonial subjugation as foreign aggression was”.1 The corruption and weakness of the Qing government attracted the wrath of the people but also criticism from the intelligentsia.2 The military and economic invasion by the Eight-Nation Alliance 3 was also accompanied by a massive intrusion of foreign currents of thought. Western science, which first revealed itself by the thunder of guns, rattled China as well when it was introduced to Chinese elites through the several translations that flooded the country at that time. The Opium War and foreign domination awakened the late Qing empire with a startling jolt, with Isaacson stating how “[i]n the wake of this series of foreign and domestic political failures, the Chinese intellectual framework seemed suddenly inadequate and incompatible with modern global politics.

Inspired by previous studies in this field, this paper addresses code-switching under the guidance of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), with the primary goal of analysing the interpersonal meanings of code-switching in three TV series. The research data were collected as follows: first, internet resources were examined to find three popular TV series with code-switching, namely I Not Stupid, Moonlight Resonance and Humble Abode; second, the data were selected, classified and observed for analysis. As the focus of this paper is interpersonal meaning, functional theories were elaborated towards a single framework for interpersonal meanings of code-switching in two parts: appraisal theory and tenor in register. The first part aims to evaluate emotions which are embedded in code-switching. The second part deals with the roles and relationships between different participants. With these theories included in the research, qualitative analyses were conducted: first of all, sample data were categorised based on their grammatical structures; then interpersonal meanings of code-switching are discussed under the guidance of these functional theories to test the applicability of SFL in this field.
