UM TELECOURSES TO EXPLORE NUCLEAR AGE, ETHICS IN AMERICA

MISSOULA —

The University of Montana Center for Continuing Education

and Summer Programs will bring thought-provoking courses on "War

and Peace in the Nuclear Age" and "Ethics in America" to public

television viewers throughout the state this winter.

The courses, available for two undergraduate or graduate

credits each, were produced with major funding from The

Annenberg/CPB Project. Viewers should check their local listings

for stations, dates and times.

The 13 segments of "War and Peace in the Nuclear Age," which

begin Jan. 23, trace the history of the nuclear age from the

development of the first atomic bomb. Topics include the Cold

War, Nixon-Kissinger era of detente, MX Midgetman weapons systems

and strategic defense initiative.

In "Ethics in America," a 10-part series beginning Jan. 31,

nearly 100 panelists explore thorny issues like the rights of the

guilty, corporate takeovers, community responsibility, and

risking patients’ lives to find a cure for a disease. Among the

speakers are Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, Sen. Alan Simpson,

Course requirements include watching the shows, completing reading and other routine assignments, and taking mid-term and final exams.
