Dance Camp Ages 7 to 9: Once Upon A Ballet™

This month's fairy tale is Cinderella! We’ll meet Cinderella and her as she sends Cinderella off to the ball. We’ll learn about the changing seasons and meet the season fairies who also help Cinderella get ready for the ball. We’ll dance as Cinderella when she meets the prince and flees from the palace when the clock strikes twelve!

This lesson plan set is meant to be used in a camp format. The following are differences between the regular monthly lesson plan sets and these camp lesson plan sets: - Camp lesson plans: - Camp lesson plans are divided into three age groups instead of five age groups: ages 3-5, 5-7, and 7-9. You may adapt these to however you see fit. - For each age group, you should have received 1 full class lesson plan (meant to be 45 minutes for ages 3-7; 1 hour for ages 7-9) and 1 mini class lesson plan (meant to be 30 minutes for ages 3-7; 45 minutes for ages b7-9). - Camp lesson plans remain ballet-based. - Camp lesson plans include a story dance for each age group that can be presented to parents on the last day. - Camps are meant to last 2.5 to 3 hours, starting with a full length class, followed by a snack, craft and mini class. You may, of course adapt the materials to what best suits classes and students at your studio. - You should have also received a Camp Snacks and Crafts document. - You should have also received the usual announcement image, coloring pages, certificate, sticker charts, and links to playlists.

MONTHLY OBJECTIVES

1. Brushes sharply out in dégagé 2. Sways from side to side with chassés 3. Performs a combination of sautés in 1st and échappés 4. Walks with stretched feet 5. Can show the difference between a quick/sharp movement and a slow/fluid movement (dynamics)

COLORING PAGES + ACTIVITY SHEETS

We recommend giving a sticker and ballet coloring page / activity sheet to each student who has behaved in class. Coloring pages are a great reward to inspire students, as well as reinforce concepts learned in class. We also want to encourage you to compliment each student with something specific she/he did well in class that day. This will help each student to feel proud as she/he leaves class each week and be more eager to return the following week. Coloring pages and activity sheets are included with the lesson plans as a separate file.

Class Activity Details with Sample Exercises

This month’s dance concept is dynamics and its theme is changing seasons. Ask students to do various movements in a quick/sharp manner versus a slow/fluid manner to help illustrate the difference in energy: dynamics. Before performing the seasons activities, let students know that there are 4 season fairies who help Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother in the ballet. For the youngest age groups, ask if they can remember a change in season. Ask them if they know things that usually occur during the different seasons. Ask older students what their favorite thing is about each season.

FLOORWORK: STRENGTHENING | Suggested Music: A Golden Childhood, Patrick Doyle, Cinderella (Original Motion Picture) Exercises for warming up the feet, turnout muscles, abs and backs should be done at the beginning of each class. Exercises may be set so that students can complete them quickly and focus on executing them correctly. Particularly if you have set floorwork exercises for students to perform at the beginning of each class, encourage students to also practice them at home between classes.

Feet: Fairy Feet Begin seated with the legs stretched in front and feet flexed. Arms are in demi seconde with the fingertips lightly touching the floor. Lower backs should be as straight as possible. In a fluid motion: move the feet through 1 demi pointe, 2 point, 3 demi pointe, 4 flex. Repeat for a total of 8 sets.

Turnout: Clock Feet Begin seated with the legs stretched in front and feet flexed. Arms are in demi seconde with the fingertips lightly touching the floor. Lower backs should be as straight as possible. 1-4 “Tick-tock-tick-tock” turn the legs out keeping the feet flexed like clock hands, 5-8 “Turn it back to 12 o’clock” turn the legs back to parallel with feet flexed. Repeat for a total of 4 sets.

Abs To warm up the ab muscles to be better engaged during barre exercises. Crunches, sit ups (with or without a partner), and rolling up and down may be done. “Hide and seek” from the pre-ballet levels may also be done.

Back Have students lay on their tummies, raise their arms and legs a couple of inches off the floor, and make a “swimming” motion by alternating which arms and legs are higher and lower. Their faces should be lifted just off the floor as well, but still facing the floor. Arms and legs should be straight and stretched long.

BARRE In Ballet 1 (ages 7+), we begin barre work at an actual barre. Students should begin each exercise with their arms en bas and place them correctly on the barre during the music preparation. At the end of the combination, students should bring their arms back to en bas and stand tall to indicate a finish.

The following are sample exercises that follow the Once Upon A Ballet™ curriculum. These exercises are meant to be accomplished by students by the end of the academic year. Please modify them as needed to best suite your students’ current ability. Once students are comfortable working in 1st position, they may begin completing barre exercises from 5th position for added difficulty (as long as they retain correct posture when working in 5th). Depending on the length of your classes, you may not have enough time to complete every exercise in every class. Plié, tendu and soutenu should be completed in every class. Other exercises may be spaced over a couple of classes if needed.

Demi Plié | S uggested Music: So This is Love, Al Hoffman, Music for the Ballet Begin in facing the barre in 1st position. Three demi pliés in 1st position (2 counts to plié and 2 counts to stretch). Tendu to 2nd position. Repeat in 2nd position, 5th position right, and 5th position left.

Battement Tendu | Suggested Music: 6 Pieces from Cinderella, , Ballet Class: Piano for Dance Begin in 1st position facing the barre. Tendu: 1 point, 2-4 hold, 5-8 slide the foot back to 1st while moving through the demi pointe. Front right and left, side right and left, back right and left, and side right and left.

Battement Soutenu | Suggested Music: 6 Pieces from Cinderella, Sergei Prokofiev, Ballet Class: Piano for Dance (continued) Begin in 1st position facing the barre. 1-4 soutenu (tendu en fondu), 5-6 close and stretch, 7-8 hold. Side right and left, side right and left, front right and left, front right and left. 1-2 plié, 3-4 stretch, 5-6 rise, 7-8 release the hands from the barre, 1-8 balance. Battement Dégagé | Suggested Music: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, Al Hoffman, Piano Music for the Ballet Begin in 1st position facing the barre. 1 brush degage, 2 hold, 3 point to tendu, 4 close. Side 4x right and 4x left.

Battement Piqué | S uggested Music: Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo, Al Hoffman, Piano Music for the Ballet (repeat) Begin in 1st position facing the barre. 1 brush degage, 2 hold, 3 piqué, 4 piqué, 5-6 hold, 7 close, 8 hold. Side right and left.

Rond de Jambe à Terre | Suggested Music: A New Family, Patrick Doyle, Cinderella (Original Motion Picture) Begin in 1st position facing the barre. 1-4 quarter rond de jambe en dehors. 5-8 quarter rond de jambe en dedans. Right and left.

Sur le Cou-de-Pied and Retiré | Suggested Music: Cinderella, Ballet L’école, Ballet Music: Music for Classical Dance and Ballet Class Begin in 1st position facing the barre. Right foot: 1 foot progression to demi pointe, 2 push to point just off the floor, 3 bring the foot to a wrapped sur le cou-de-pied, 4 hold, 5-8 lower the foot back to close moving through the demi pointe. Repeat. 1 foot progression to demi pointe, 2 point the foot to sur le cou-de-pied devant, 3 raise the leg to retiré devant, 4-5 hold, 6-8 lower the foot to close moving through the demi pointe. Repeat all left. * If students have a difficult time keeping their hips level in retiré, have them practice the Pre-Ballet IIb passé combination at the barre.

Adagio | S uggested Music: Cinderella Dreams of the Ball, Prokofiev, Cinderella Begin in 1st position facing the barre. In a slow, fluid motion: 1-4 brush and lift the leg (to 45-60 degrees), 5-8 close. Side right and left. Front right and left.

Grand Battement | S uggested Music: Big Waltz Bayadere and Cinderella, Lisa Harris, My Favorite Ballet Class I & II Begin in 1st position facing the barre. 1 point to tendu, 2 kick (to 45-60 degrees), 3 point to tendu, 4 close. Side 2x right and 2x left. Front 2x right and 2x left.

Practice in 1st and 2nd position. Add soubresauts from 5th position. Then add changements from 5th position.

FLOORWORK: STRETCHING | Suggested Music: Fairy Godmother, Patrick Doyle, Cinderella (Original Motion Picture) Stretching exercises should be done either after barre or at the end of class to further develop flexibility. Particularly if you have set floorwork exercises for students to perform at the beginning of each class, encourage students to also practice them at home.

Hamstring Stretch Forward Students should be able to sit with their legs stretched straight in front of them and stretch forward over their legs. Using an image such as painting a color or rainbow down the legs all the way to the toes makes stretching more fun for students of this age, as well as helps through kinesthetic learning (learning through feeling).

Center Stretch Forward in a Wide Second In a seated position, with the legs in a wide second, students should be able to walk their fingers forward to stretch and then back to recover to a seated position. Knees should remain facing the ceiling the entire time. Students should also be able to flex and point their feet while in this position.

Back For a gentle back stretch, students should be able to lay on their tummies with their legs stretched straight on the floor behind them, and raise themselves up on their elbows. They should be able to turn their head from side to side while in this position.

Shoulders, Arms & Neck In this level, students should stretch the shoulders and arms. Arms may be clasped behind and raised to open the chest. One arm may be bent and held at the elbow overhead while the other arm pulls it gently for a stretch of the shoulders. Students may gently tilt and turn their head to each side to stretch their necks.

CENTRE Centre exercises help in developing poise and balance. The following are sample exercises that follow the Once Upon A Ballet™ curriculum. These exercises are meant to be accomplished by students by the end of the academic year. Please modify them as needed to best suit your students’ current ability.

Swings and Head Exercise | S uggested Music: Life and Laughter, Patrick Doyle, Cinderella (Original Motion Picture) Begin in parallel facing front with the arms down by the sides. 1 look right, 2 hold, 3 look front, 4 hold, 5-8 repeat left, raising the arms straight up on count 8. 1-4 swing down forward over, and up, 5-8 repeat the swing. 1-8 repeat the head portion with the head tilting instead of turning. 1-8 two swings down and up. Sways with Chassés | S uggested Music: Life and Laughter, Patrick Doyle, Cinderella (Original Motion Picture) (continued) Begin with the right leg tendu side. Hands may be in demi seconde, holding the skirt, or holding a prop* 1 sway right, 2 hold, 3 sway left, 4 hold, 5 sway right, 6 hold, 7 sway left, 8 hold, 1 sway right, 2 hold, 3 sway left, 4 hold, 5-6 chassé side to the right, 7-8 step to the right and tendu the left leg side. 1-8 repeat swaying to the left first (so the chassé will be left). *If holding a scarf or ribbon streamers, alternate which hand holds them with the sways (in the right hand for sways to the right, etc.)

Fairy Port de Bras | Suggested Music: Winter Fairy, Prokofiev, Cinderella Begin facing front, standing in 1st position with the arms en bas. 1-2 raise arms to 1st position, 3-4 sweep arms down through en bas to low V, 5-8 repeat. 1-8 1st port de bras. 1-4 raise both arms to high V, 5-8 lower both arms. 1-8 2nd port de bras.

Battement Tendus and Battement Soutenu | S uggested Music: So this is Love, Al Hoffman, Piano Music for the Ballet Begin facing front, standing in 1st position with the arms en bas. Prepare the arms to 5th position during the preparation. 1-4 battement tendu side with the right leg 2x, 5-8 battement soutenu side with the right leg 1x. 1-8 repeat with the left leg. Repeat all right and left.

Preparation for Pirouettes | S uggested Music: Big Waltz Bayadere and Cinderella, Lisa Harris, My Favorite Ballet Class I & II Begin facing front, standing in 1st position with the hands on the shoulders. 1 look directly side to the left, 2 hold, 3 front, 4 rise, 5-6 quarter bourrée turn to the right leaving the head facing front, 7 lower, 8 look straight ahead (now facing directly stage right). Repeat for a total of 4 sets to the right. Repeat for a total of 4 sets to the left.

Balancé | S uggested Music: Act II: Cinderella Arrives at the Ball, Prokofiev, Cinderella Students should be introduced to balancé at this level. Balancé should first be introduced as a down-up-down step. This can be done with little marches in parallel (stepping down on the right foot, up on the left, down on the right, then down on the left, up on the right, down on the left--in a kind of step-ball-change manner). Once the rhythm has been established, the step can move from side to side in parallel. Then turnout can be added from side to side. Finally, paying attention to stretching the leg and pointing the toes on the steps out to the side should be added.

ADAGIO: Cinderella Arrives at the Ball | S uggested Music: Act II: Cinderella’s Arrival, Prokofiev, Cinderella This adagio is simple but allows students to roleplay as Cinderella arriving at the ball and to focus on walking with stretched feet and 3rd arabesque. This adagio travels across the floor on the diagonal. Discuss the quality of the adagio movement with students. Is it quick and sharp or slow and smooth?

- Cinderella runs into the palace (runs en demi pointe about ⅓ of the way across the pathway) - Step forward on the right leg, left leg into tendu back, arms go through 1st position and into 3rd arabesque - Lift the back leg slightly then step through onto the left leg - Repeat the step into arabesque two more times - Repeat the entire combination on the other side

* Once students have done the above version for a week or two, change the step into 3rd arabesque into a chasse into 3rd arabesque.. ** Before beginning this adagio, you may want to take your students back to the barre, have them do a tendu derriere and lift. The lift here and during the adagio exercise does not need to be high for this level. Degage height is sufficient as long as the back leg is straight and the foot is pointed without sickling. Check your students at the barre first to help develop correct muscle memory.

FREE DANCE: Season Fairies | Suggested Music: 1. Fairy Godmother, 2. Spring Fairy, 3. Winter Fairy, Prokofiev, Cinderella Ask your students if they knew Cinderella has a Fairy Godmother PLUS four season fairies in the ballet version of the fairy tale. Tell your students they are going to free dance as the different season fairies and the Fairy Godmother. Ask them what movements they think are associated with each season and remind them of those movements as you go through and have them dance as each fairy.

Add some props for extra fun. Here are some ideas: flowers for spring, yellow scarves or fabric for the sun, leaves for fall, paper snowflakes for winter.

STORY DANCE: Summer Fairy | Summer Fairy, Prokofiev, Cinderella

Steps Arms Hold for the first phrase Stand in 1st position, en face 2nd port de bras Runs forward on demi pointe Arms come forward into 1st position Sway right, sway left Arms swoop into 3rd arabesque right then left Sway right with a chassé Over the top in a circular motion, ending 3rd arabesque right (typical sway arms) Sway left Arms swoop into 3rd arabesque left 8 passe walks in a small circle around self** Hands on shoulders or hips Slow balancé right Hands on shoulders or hips Slow balancé left Hands on shoulders or hips 8 passé walks in a small circle around self** Hands on shoulders or hips 2 bourrée turns spotting front 5th position
