Bostrom et al. provide “a set of policy desiderata”, out of which this article attempts to contribute to the “interests of digital minds”. The focus is on two interests of potentially sentient digital minds: to avoid suffering and to have the freedom of choice about their deletion. Various challenges are considered, including the vast range of potential features of digital minds, the difficulties in assessing the interests and wellbeing of sentient digital minds, and the skepticism that such research may encounter. Prolegomena to abolish suffering of sentient digital minds as well as to measure and specify wellbeing of sentient digital minds are outlined by means of the new field of AI welfare science, which is derived from animal welfare science. The establishment of AI welfare science serves as a prerequisite for the formulation of AI welfare policies, which regulate the wellbeing of sentient digital minds. This article aims to contribute to sentiocentrism through inclusion, thus to policies for antispeciesism, as well as to AI safety, for which wellbeing of AIs would be a cornerstone. -

Animal Sentience 2016.087: Paez Commentary on Ng on Animal Suffering Wild animal suffering and vegan outreach Commentary on Ng on Animal Suffering Eze Paez Department of Legal, Moral and Political Philosophy Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona Abstract: Ng’s strategic proposal seems to downplay the potential benefits of advocacy for wild animals and omit what may be the most effective strategy to reduce the harms farmed animals suffer: vegan outreach. Eze Paez, lecturer in moral and political philosophy at Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona, studies normative and applied ethics, especially ontological and normative aspects of abortion and the moral consideration of nonhuman animals. He is a member of Animal Ethics. upf.academia.edu/ezepaez Underestimating the importance of wild animal suffering. Ng’s (2016) view is not that animal advocates should focus only on farmed animals, to the exclusion of those that live in the wild. He concedes that our efforts must also be directed toward raising awareness of the harms suffered by animals in nature. Nonetheless, he seems to suggest that these efforts should be minimal relative to those devoted to reducing the harms farmed animals suffer. Ng underestimates the potential benefits of advocacy for wild animals in terms of net reduction in suffering perhaps because he is overestimating people’s resistance to caring about wild animals and to intervening in nature on their behalf. -

First, we explain why it is necessary to engage in thinking about animal ethics and why it is not enough to rely on feelings alone. Secondly, we present and discuss five different kinds of views about the nature of our duties to animals. They are: contractarianism, utilitarianism, the animal rights view, contextual views, and a respect for nature view. Finally, we briefly consider whether it is possible to combine elements from the presented views, and how to make up one’s mind. 1. Introduction: The need to give reasons for one’s ethical views This chapter describes and discusses different views on right and wrong in our dealings with animals. What might be right or wrong is not a factual question, and therefore cannot be settled by the same methods as those used in biology and other natural sciences. -

Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 28.1: 91–99. Abstract Ctenolepisma almeriensis n. sp. of Lepismatidae (Insecta, Zygentoma) from south–eastern Spain.— Ctenolepisma almeriensis n. sp., from the south–eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula is described. This species was determined previously as Ctenolepisma lineata (Fabricius, 1775), which is widespread over the south–western Palaeartic region. The main difference between the two species is the setation of thoracic sternites. In each bristle–comb of the mesosternum and the metasternum, macrosetae are arranged in a single row in C. lineata and in two parallel rows in C. almeriensis n. sp. In the prosternum, the first species shows 1–2 irregular lines of macrosetae per comb, and the new species shows 2–3 lines. Based on other parameters of setation, a discriminant analysis was carried out to separate a group of Spanish specimens of C. lineata from another group of specimens of the new species. This analysis demonstrated the validity of the occurrence of double or single lines of macrosetae in thoracic sternites to distinguish between the two species. ANIMAL ETHICS 2016 STRATEGIC PLAN INTRODUCTION In 2015 Animal Ethics became known as an organization doing outreach work among activists and academics and in the streets, as well as on the internet. Our website is frequently updated and we have an active presence on social networks. Supporters also regularly share articles of ours on Reddit. In 2016, we will expand our activities in all these areas. The way we intend to do so is explained in our activities plan below. AIMS FOR 2016 GOALS Our general goals in 2016 are the following: 1. Recognition and credibility of Animal Ethics 1.1. Develop a branding plan and guidelines. 1.2. Improve the quality of our graphics and printed materials. 1.3. Become known by more activists and people concerned about animals as a credible source of information. 2. Organization impact 2.1. Make antispeciesism a mainstream view and part of the everyday language of animal activists. Spread among animal activists the idea that we should help nonhuman animals even when humans are not the cause of their harms, and gain acceptance of the view that this is a necessary conclusion of antispeciesism. 1 STRATEGIC PLAN 2016 2.2. Further the discussion about wild animal suffering and speciesism in the academic world. 2.3. Spread antispeciesism, veganism, and concern for animals in nature among the general public, and encourage more people to engage in animal advocacy. Success in points 1 and 2 will be measured quantitatively in terms of reach and interaction on social networks, visits to our websites and number of people reached in our outreach activities. -

Now we face the question whether a still higher 'standard of living' is worth its cost in things natural, wild and free. For us of the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important that television.” Aldo Leopold 2 Abstract The Mogale’s Gate Biodiversity Centre is a 3 060 ha reserve located within the Gauteng province. The area comprises grassland with woodland patches in valleys and lower-lying areas. To develop a scientifically based management plan a detailed vegetation study was undertaken to identify and describe the different ecosystems present. From a TWINSPAN classification twelve plant communities, which can be grouped into nine major communities, were identified. A classification and description of the plant communities, as well as, a management plan are presented. The area comprises 80% grassland and 20% woodland with 109 different plant families. The centre has a grazing capacity of 5.7 ha/LSU with a moderate to good veld condition. From the results of this study it is clear that the area makes a significant contribution towards carbon storage with a total of 0.520 tC/ha/yr stored in all the plant communities. [email protected] [email protected] ABSTRACT Strepsiptera are small group of entomophagous parasiroids of cosmopolitan in distribution. They parasitize seven orders of Insecta and the common hosts in Europe are Hymenoptera, Hemiptera and Thysanura. INTRODUCTION Strepsiptera are obligate endoparasites the hosts of which include Blattodea, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Mantodea, Orthoptera, and Thysanura, and 33 families. The name of the group is derived form the Greek words: twisted ( Strepsi-) and wing (pteron ), and refers in particular to the twisted hind wing of the male while in flight. Representatives of the suborder Mengenillidia show more primitive characteristics and parasitise Thysanura (Lepismatidae), the only known apterygote to be parasitized. Strepsiptera are cosmopolitan in distribution and are difficult to find: often the host has to be located to find the strepsipteran. To date about 600 species have been described, but many more await description and some could be cryptic species. The group is relatively well known in Europe (Kinzelbach, 1971, 1978), where details of Strepsiptera life history have been studied in Elenchus tenuicornis Kirby (Baumert, 1958, 1959), a parasite of Delphacidae (Homoptera) and in Xenos vesparum (Christ) (Hughes et al ., 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2005), a parasite of polistine paper wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). While most strepsipterans parasitize single taxa (leafhoppers or halictid bees), the males and females in the family Myrmecolacidae parasitize hosts belonging to different orders: (Formicidae and Orthoptera, respectively) (Ogloblin, 1939, Kathirithamby and Hamilton, 1992). -
