THE CHURCH OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

40 FOR 40 There is nothing so beautiful as a church dressed up for Easter! Website: www.stmaxkolbechurch.org When I was growing up, we didn’t have a church. Our parish General Email: [email protected] would rent out auditoriums and gymnasiums for Sunday Mass. Parish Office Phone: 763-972-2077 Easter Vigil was at a very large high school auditorium. We sat Pastor: Fr. Kyle Kowalczyk, ext. 222 on folding chairs (one year, it was on bleachers) for a four hour [email protected] Mass that, even as a high schooler, entranced me! The most Deacon: Rev. Mr. Joseph Kittok, 763-221-6658 amazing part was when the lights came on and the Gloria began, [email protected] and an endless stream of flower pots appeared on the stage Deacon: Rev. Mr. Bruce Bowen, 612-298-4867 from every direction! (I had no idea that wasn’t the norm until I [email protected] went to another church in college for the Easter Vigil, where all Office & Liturgical Administrator: Catherine Taylor, the flowers were placed ahead of time! (And had no idea what a ext. 221 [email protected] feat of death defying decorating skills it would take to organize Business Administrator: Jill Ellingson, ext. 223 such a cooperative effort until I became a priest!)) It was so [email protected] beautiful that you almost forgot that you were in a gym! It’s not Bookkeeper: Marie Bauman, ext. 226 an ideal setting, but you certainly get the from “death to [email protected] resurrection” theme in spades! Director of Music: Alexa Vavra [email protected] Our church is so beautiful, it’s hard to make it look plain during Director of Parish & Life: Eric Russek, ext. 251 Lent. We can take away the flowers on the altar, but you still [email protected] have flowers on the ceiling, you know. The first time I saw our Safe Environment Coordinator: Eric Russek, ext. 251 church, its beauty took my breath away! (Both of our churches Marriage Preparation & Funeral Coordinator: are probably in the top 25 most beautiful in the Archdiocese.) If Kathy Carlson, ext. 246, you’ve seen the old pictures of the builders up on poplar- [email protected] scaffolding working on the ceiling, it really is a feat that rivals the Bulletin Editor: Kristin Detloff, 971-280-9676, Easter Vigil flower-brigade of my youth! Our forefathers spared [email protected] no expense for the glorification of God! I don’t think I’ll ever get Cemetery Liaison : Jane Speckel, 763-442-1779 tired of walking in and kneeling there at the communion rail [email protected] looking up at Mary . Parish Trustees: Jason Winter and Gary Schaust However… after having spent a good number of hours doing Miscarriage Ministry: Bobi Meehan, 763-479-2604 just that, I’ve noticed that our church is getting a little tired. Adoration Coordinator: Barb Janas, 763-972-6843

Paintings are fading, altars are chipping, and are ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE CATHOLIC SCHOOL wearing out. I’ve walked into old churches before, and thought, “Shoot, this place needs a little love.” I don’t want that to be Website: www.stmaxkolbeschool.org ours. I don’t want people to walk in and think, “Well, the people School Phone: 763-972-2528 a hundred years ago really cared, but nobody else has!” School Principal: Mary Ziebell, ext. 228 [email protected] I think the word has probably gotten out by now that Easter School Secretary: Sandi Jucha, ext. 229 Monday is my 40th birthday––it’s sort of hard to keep an [email protected] occasion like that secret. You have always been so generous to me, and if you are so inclined on this festive occasion the only gift I would ask for is the ability to augment the beauty of our church. There are three mini-projects that I think we could do St. Maximilian Kolbe Councils for 40K (40 for 40!), which would include purchasing new Pastoral Council vestments for Sunday Masses to replace the well used ones we currently have, add some lights so that we can see the beautiful B.J. Ludwig, Chairperson, [email protected] paintings on the outer arch which were cleaned two summers Susan Fobbe, Secretary ago, and repaint the three original altars which are in pretty bad Tim Burke, Susan Robinson, shape. Heather Triplett, Connie Botz

Can we survive with what we have? Sure. But isn’t that what Please contact B.J. Ludwig of the Pastoral Council with concerns or birthday gifts are all about: giving someone something that he comments about the parish. Concerns and ideas will be discussed with Fr. Kowalczyk at the monthly Council meeting. can live without but make life that much better? If you would like to make such a gift, feel free to make a check out to the Finance Council parish (tax deductible, of course!) and put something like “40 for Jeff Carriveau, Kelly Horn, John Reuter, Bill Bandzuch , Brian Marketon 40” in the memo line. I am grateful to be in a beautiful parish, but much more grateful to serve such beautiful parishioners (for To learn more about our financial health, please contact many years). And hey! if this works, just wait to see what I have Jill Ellingson, our Parish Business Administrator. To reach her planned for my 50th! Happy Easter to all of you (and happy directly, please call 763-972-2077 ext 223 or email her at birthday to me)! - Fr. Kowalczyk [email protected]

NEW MASS TIMES BEGINNING APRIL 11! (Provisional)

In order to allow more people to attend Mass in the church, on a provisional basis we are adding a third Mass on Sunday and shifting Mass times to 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, and 11:00 AM. We will try this through April and re-evaluate. We are happy that more people are returning to Mass and want to be able to accommodate all with safe social distancing!

NOTE: No Mass or confession on Tuesday, April 6!

Callings of Women in the Church: A Young Feminist Perspective April 9, 2021

It’s an experience many women share: they are talented and passionate about discipleship, but they serve a church that puts limits on their participation simply because of their gender. Who can Catholic women turn to for encouragement? How is God calling people of all genders to speak their truths and stand up to the patriarchy? Presented through a young feminist lens, this presentation welcomes people of all genders to consider how the church can grow If you or someone you know has been abused, into a more inclusive, empowering community. exploited or harassed by a clergy member, religious brother or sister or lay employee or volunteer or a Friday, April 9, Webinar presentation from 9:00-11:00 a.m. parish, or Catholic school, your first call should be Event is Free. to law enforcement.
