Utter the words “New Jersey wine” and you’ll hear all sorts of wisecracks. But after a weekend road trip exploring a handful of some of the state’s 40 or so wineries, I happily discovered that New Jersey is making vino that transcends the punch line to a tired Joe Piscopo joke. Far from turning out mass-produced plonk, a la Thunderbird, producers are growing quality estate-produced wines. So, where to begin? The state has two distinct growing regions roughly divided into the farmland of the north and the coastal region of the south. Still, wineries are haphazardly strewn about, making it difficult to pinpoint an obvious travel route. My trip involved traversing much of the rural farmland of central New Jersey (for help planning your trip, check out newjerseywines.com). Checking the stock at Unionville Vineyard in New Jersey. The North Fork is known for its merlot, the Finger Lakes for its riesling and as for New Jersey? My first stop was Alba Vineyard in Milford, a haven for cyclists and a short drive from the scenic Delaware River.

    New Jersey’s Unionville Vineyards Wins Gold in International Competition RINGOES, NJ, JUNE 14, 2010 – Unionville Vineyards announced today that it won an international Gold Medal for their 2008 Single Vineyard Chardonnay, Pheasant Hill for achieving the highest quality and excellence in a wine category. The Gold “Best In Class” Medal for the total Dry White Wine Class was awarded to the vineyard by The International Wine and Spirit Competition. According to the tasting notes, Unionville “stunned the judges into awarding Gold “Best In Class” for this New Jersey Chardonnay with striking honeysuckle notes, ripe melon and mango.” The International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) was founded in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world's best wines, spirits and liqueurs. This standard is achieved through a rigorous two-stage judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical analysis.     Interim Report: Pilot Program for Winery Special Occasion Events New Jersey State Agriculture Development Committee June 2018 Background P.L. 2014, ch. 16, “the Winery Special Occasion Events Law,” was enacted in July 2014 to allow wineries to conduct special occasion events on preserved farmland under certain conditions as part of a 44- month pilot program. Following the pilot program’s expiration on March 1, 2018, the Legislature authorized extending the pilot program for two years and directed the State Agriculture Development Committee (SADC) to provide an interim report on the implementation and operation of the pilot program to date. Wineries are subject to the pilot program only if they conduct special occasion events on the preserved premises. They are not subject to the pilot program if they do not conduct special occasion events or conduct them only within exception areas – areas that were excluded from the Farmland Preservation Program deed of easement at the time of preservation. The law characterizes a special occasion event as a “wedding, lifetime milestone event, or other cultural or social event as defined by the appropriate county agriculture development board.” The SADC initially identified 20 preserved farms with wineries that potentially could be subject to the pilot program. Two farms subsequently were deleted from the list – one ceased production and the other was in an eight-year farmland preservation program that expired. One newly established winery was added to the list, resulting in a revised list of 19 wineries associated with preserved farmland. While not all the wineries on this list conduct special occasion events, they have been the subject of the SADC’s outreach efforts on the pilot program.

    UVA-QA-0813 Dec. 4, 2013 THE JUDGMENT OF PRINCETON In what has been called the most important wine event of the 20th century, wines from California’s Napa Valley were evaluated alongside some of France’s best in blind taste tests conducted in Paris on May 24, 1976. In what is now known as the Judgment of Paris, a wine from Napa Valley was judged the best (of 10 tasted) in both the red and white competitions. To put it mildly, the result stunned the wine world. For most people at the time, it was simply unthinkable that wines from California could be as good as those from France. For example, upon hearing the results, one of the Paris judges demanded to have her scorecard back for fear that it would become known that she had rated some of the California wines higher than the higher-priced and better-respected French wines.1 The event was dramatized in the 2008 film Bottle Shock. The sole journalist attending the Paris event was George Taber of Time magazine. Thirty- six years later, Taber, with the help of two wine economists from Princeton University and various New Jersey wine associations, would stage a similar event. But this time, the best French wines would be compared with the best wines from New Jersey. That’s right—New Jersey. People have been making wines [in New Jersey] since colonial days, although after American Prohibition most of them were underwhelming sweet ones made with local blueberries and peaches. A small cadre of vintners, though, had been striving in recent years to produce better wines using the world’s leading viniferas.2 If all went well, Taber and the group knew this event would be called “the Judgment of” some place, and with that in mind, they selected Princeton as the setting instead of other possible New Jersey locations such as Newark, Jersey City, the Jersey Shore, Hoboken, and Ho-Ho-Kus.
