The Fourth National Convention of the Vatican Philatelic St. Francis Xavier, and Father Mullowney. On November 11, Vatican City issued a series of six stamps commemorating the journeys of Pope John Paul II during the year 1996. The stamps are verti- cal, measuring 29 x 40.5 mm., and have a perfora- tion of 13 3/4 x 13 1/3. They were printed in offset and issued in sheets of 20. Joh. Enschede of the Neth- erlands printed 450,000 complete series. The stamps were designed by Irio Ottavio Fantini. At the upper right of each is the Papal Tiara and Crossed Keys, while the dates of the journey and name(s) visited appear at the upper right. At the bot- tom are the words CITTA DEL VATICANO and the value. Each of the stamps feature the Pope bent over the pastoral cross he is holding, as well as architec- tural and cultural elements typical of the countries visited. They also feature a pastel background which conveys a feeling of serenity and peace. The values and designs are as follows:

The basic cancellation used on the Jubilee covers issued by the Vatican as reported in the July, 1997 Notes. The first group of three was issued on March 10, 1997. The wording on the cancels is the same on all with a different Pope pictured for each Holy Year. The cancellation reads: "Jubilee Year 2000 A.D. Christ- Yesterday, Today, and Forever."
