But it is now recognised that upon mythology and folklore rests the basis of the new science of Comparative Religion. The evolution of religion from mythology has now been made plain. It is a law of evolution that, though the parent types which precede certain forms are doomed to perish, they yet bequeath to their descendants certain of their characteristics ; and although mythology has perished (in the civilised world, at least), it has left an indelible stamp not only upon modem religions, but also upon local and national custom. The work of Fruger, Lang, Immerwahr, and others has revolutionised mythology, and has evolved from the unexplained mass of tales of forty years ago a definite and systematic science. -

The Government of Troy: Politics in the "Iliad" Sale, William Merritt Greek, Roman and Byzantine Studies; Spring 1994; 35, 1; ProQuest pg. 5 The Government of Troy: Politics in the Iliad William Merritt Sale N RECENTLY PUBLISHED STUDIES of Homeric formulae I have I called attention, on the basis of statistical evidence, to two facts about Homer's Trojans in the Iliad: (1) The nominative proper-name formulae used by the poet to refer to them display a remarkable lacuna: there are no frequently occurring, 'regular', formulae. 1 The other characters and peoples who are mentioned anything like as often as the Trojans all have regular formulae, usually more than one. We give the term 'regular formula' a quantitative definition, "exactly repeated six times or more," but the phenomenon is not mere ly quantitative; there are certain qualities that regular formulae have and that infrequently occurring formulae tend to lack. Most notable of these are their noun-epithet form (nominative proper-name noun-verb formulae all occur infrequently) and the occurrence of the formula in a major colon:2 frequently oc curring formulae are noun-epithet and occupy major cola; infre quent formulae fall in minor cola, and the less frequently they occur, the more likely they are to fall in minor cola and to be noun-verbal in syntax. Hence the distinction between regular and infrequent formulae is qualitative, and the Trojans in the nominative lack something they ought to have, noun-epithet formulae used regularly to fill metrical spaces that the other characters have formulae to fill. A lack of regular formulae is significant; and the significance is statistically demonstrable.3 1 w. -

These works deserve our careful attention as the principal sources of the medieval Troy story and as examples of the anti-Homeric literature of late antiquity. In the introduction I have briefly described the influence of our authors on later European literature, and have tried to show how our Latin texts depend on Greek originals. For the latter purpose I have found the scholarship of Nathaniel Edward Griffin especially rewarding for Dictys and that of Otmar Schissel von Fleschenberg for Dares. I have used the notes to comment on matters of form (how our Latin texts probably differ from their Greek originals), to point out difficulties and incon sistencies, and to cite some of the sources and parallel versions of the stories that Dictys and Dares tell. -

There was once a beer commercial that used to talk about a mysterious group of little people called the Artesian’s. The name was a takeoff on the beer company’s use of Artesian wells that supposedly consisted of the purest of well waters. As I recall the commercial, the location was in Tumwater Washington and the commercial always talked about the fact that no one ever saw the Artesians but that their work was embedded in the quality of their brew. I have a little surprise for you. You have a group of people in your town that are like those Artesian’s. You may not even know where they are, but they are there none the less. They are called “Ucalegon’s”. In the past you have met many of them but didn’t know what they were called. You merely called them “fire victims”. You might wonder, what is the difference? The answer is found in the depths of etymology. Etymology is the study of the origins of words. Ucalegon was one of the elders of Troy, whose house was set on fire by the Achaeans when they sacked the city. If you have read the Iliad or the classic Aeneid, you will find references to his name. He was a very close friend to Priam who was the King of Troy. For many years, the word Ucalegon was noun that meant a neighbor whose house is on fire or has burned down. Apparently, it was possible to be a fire victim over 2,000 years ago, and receive sympathy from others. -

He has endeavoured to give a version that in some measure retains the flowing ease and simple directness of Homer's style, and that has due regard to the emphasis attaching to the arrangement of words in the original ; and to make use of a diction that, while elevated, is, he trusts, not stilted. To attain to the nobility of Homer's manner may well be beyond the possibilities of modern English prose. Matters of a controversial nature have as a rule not been touched upon in the notes to this edition, and the brief bibhography is meant merely to sug- gest books of high interest and value to the student of the Iliad. Few of those which deal primarily with the higher criticism have been included, because the ti'anslator is convinced that such matters lie wholly outside the scope of this book. In the brief introduction prefixed to his version of the Odyssey the translator set forth frankly the fact that to many scholars it seems impossible to speak of Homer as a definite individual, or to accept the view that in the early period either the Iliad or the Odyssey had attained a fixed form. -

U Ucalegon (Οὐκαλέγων). One of the elder statesmen of Troy who would watch the fighting on the plain from the city-walls 'like cicadas along a tree'. His house was among the first to be fired by the Greeks coming out of the *Trojan Horse. [Homer Il 3.148-53; Vergil Aen 3.310- 1] Ulysses or Ulyxes. See Odysseus. Underworld. See Hades. Urania (Οὐρανία). One of the nine *Muses, born of Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory, and Zeus. She was the muse of astronomy, and usually portrayed seated, with her elbow resting on a large celestial globe, a pair of dividers in her hand, and the other hand pointing upwards to the sky. Urania was also an epithet of Aphrodite as 'heavenly' love associated with the soul, and distinguished from Aphrodite Pandemos, 'popular' and physical love by Pausanias in his speech on Eros in Plato's Symposium. [Apollodorus 1.3.1; Hesiod Theog 78; Plato Symp 180d-185c] Uranus (Οὐρανός, Latin 'Caelus' or 'Caelum'). In ancient times Uranus was the sphere or vault of the outer heaven, to which were attached the fixed stars; the name is now given to the most distant planet of the solar system. In myth Uranus was the oldest of the gods, being the first- born of *Gaia ('Earth') as well as her lover, covering her on every side. Gaia conceived by him the generation of twelve Titans, the three Cyclopes and the three Hundred-Handers, but as soon as each was born Uranus would not let the children come into the light, so that she was in great distress at the wrong done to her.
