  • Crowd Sourcing Indie Movies
Crowd sourcing indie movies Henry H. Perritt, Jr.1 I. Introduction The Internet-centered technology developments are revolutionizing the ways in which movies can be made. Independent (“indie”) moviemakers now have access to video capture technologies that can produce quality equal to the best that Hollywood can produce. The revolution already has produced an explosion of publically available video content on Internet sites such as YouTube. As the revolution evolves, quality of story and characterization will improve, offering consumers a wider variety of good entertainment. The use of crowdsourcing to make indie movies is a possibility that has not yet been explored fully, although the use of crowdsourcing is growing in other areas. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk,2 for example, is a website that allows crowdsourcing requesters and contributors to interact for payment. It is focused on software development. In video entertainment, the crowdsourcing possibilities are only dimly perceived, although Amazon Studios solicits screenplays and offers subsidies and studio participation in making indie movies.3 This article argues that crowdsourcing can be used for every step of making a movie, increasing the range of collaboration available to creators and reducing capital requirements. It begins with a fictional account of a team of young moviemakers, and then steps through each step of making their movie, considering what plans they should make for crowdsourcing, the available Web-based and software tools, and the business an legal 1 Professor of Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law. • The Role of Kimchi in Korean Culinary Nationalism and Cultural Identity
uan From “Paocai” to “Xinqi”: The Role of Kimchi in Korean Culinary Nationalism and Cultural Identity By Chung Wing Tung Elaine Department of Korean Studies This paper is a great example of investigation on “identity” in the field of the humanities. The paper explores conflicts of interest when kimchi, a staple food item in Korean cuisine, is promoted outside of the peninsula as a “traditional” and “national” cultural product of Korea. When South Korean government steps in as the main promoter of Korean cultural products overseas, many problems arise and the case of kimchi bears all the complicated questions of promoting a specific national cultural product to the global community. Being familiar with the domestic success of centrally-orchestrated economic development programs, South Korean government has not shunned away from actively promoting Korean movies, TV dramas, music, and culinary products outside Korea. In the case of kimchi, the paradox is more pronounced: how can you make a very distinct local taste appealing to foreign countries? To sell kimchi to non-Koreans, overseas campaigns try to refashion kimchi as a “globally” acceptable culinary item, and at the same time, try to focus on the “Koreanness” of kimchi. The author successfully demonstrates the fascinating attempts and failures of government agency-driven campaigns, including the backlash from Chinese consumers over the changes in the Chinese translation of kimchi. This could be closely related to the current K-pop boom in Asia. Since there is recent history of China-Korea cultural war among internet users, fan-driven K-pop boom can burst its bubble by any nonsensical intervention of South Korean government.

  • Comparing Digital Media Industries in South Korea and Australia: the Case of Netflix Take-Up
International Journal of Communication 12(2018), 4553–4572 1932–8036/20180005 Comparing Digital Media Industries in South Korea and Australia: The Case of Netflix Take-Up TIM DWYER1 University of Sydney, Australia YONGWOON SHIM SK Research Institute, South Korea HEEJIN LEE Yonsei University, South Korea JONATHON HUTCHINSON University of Sydney, Australia The broader purpose of our research is to compare digital media business and policy in Australia and South Korea. Our assumption is that comparisons of this kind offer heuristic insights into the underlying dynamics of contemporary digital media industry change. We take the view that media industry transition can usefully analyze digital media transformations through a political-economic lens, together with more specific cultural frames for policy and regulation. We examine the industry and policy implications of over-the-top (OTT) media services in overseas markets by comparing Netflix in Australia and Korea. We also argue that contested policy agendas for broadband infrastructures, including emergent 5G mobile broadband, are critical to how OTT services such as Netflix build audiences. We argue that seminal media theorists Raymond Williams and Brian Winston can assist in comparatively analyzing technical innovation and take-up of products, services, and applications in the media sector. In terms of our methodology, we combine critical media studies approaches to industry change through data derived from industry interviews, trade articles, reports, and relevant “gray” and scholarly literature.
