Selected Contents of Waystrode Manor, Kent

The following fourteen lots formed part of the furnishings of Waystrode Manor and were largely inherited through long standing family collections.

Waystrode Manor’s precise date of origin isn’t known, although Elizabethan historians claim that its first owner was a knight by the name of Wheystrode, to whom King John gave the manor in 1208. Wheystrode and his descendants held it until 1460, after which it was sold, according to Hasted’s History and Topographical Survey of Kent (1797), first to a man called May and then, in 1460, to the Style (or Still) family, in whose hands it remained for the next 300 years. Their descendants were still living in the area in the 1960s.

The 1954 English Heritage listing describes the manor house as ‘a restored 15th century farmhouse, with later 16th and 17th century additions’, all of which are discernible in the present building, which is generally referred to as Tudor, reflecting Cowden’s importance 12 at a time when the area, rich in ironstone, produced guns for the army and navy, as well as agricultural and household goods. Mouquin, Pierre IV Migeon 1696 - 1758, Paris, 2001, p. 67). Pierre IV was the grandson of the founder of the family of ébénistes, Pierre I (active circa 1637), and son of the ébéniste Pierre III Migeon (1665 - circa 1717). Pierre Migeon IV produced furniture for an illustrious noble clientele, which led to large commissions by the Court and Madame de Pompadour. He was known for employing simple veneers in a manner which made use 78 of the natural beauty and grain of the material and for pieces with undulating outlines.
