IMPACT European Capital of Culture 2017 2017 was a decisive year in the history of Aarhus The European Capital of Culture title has been of decisive importance to our city, and it has had a great impact on Aarhus and the entire region

Aarhus is a city where culture sets the agenda. Culture constitutes a huge part of our identity and self-image

In a recently completed survey by analysis known city in to being a European Aarhus 2017 has laid the foundation for brand institute Epinion, the result is clear: 40 % destination that is known in large parts of new inter-municipal collaboration across the of citizens polled in Aarhus indicate that the world. Aarhus 2017 was the result of a long, at cross-department collaboration. Strong strategic commitment, and it has left ties have been established for new col- traces in many areas. Aarhus has been laborative projects, both internally in the transformed from being a relatively un- municipality and with external partners. Rabih Azad-Ahmad Alderman, Culture and Citizens' Services The year as European Capital of Culture was a fantastic year for Aarhus – and for the entire Central Region. Never before has the city been visited by so many tourists, never have we had so many overnight stays at hotels, and never before have we experienced such extensive international media coverage. It is – and has been – a huge accomplishment by the city and the region, and it has been incredible to feel and experience the pride among everybody about what we have achieved together.

The year as Capital of Culture has shown what we are capable of when we pull together – and what it takes for us to carry that success forward.

Jacob Bundsgaard , Aarhus

The Capital of Culture year gave a new boost to cultural life collaboration in Aarhus. More people gained access to cultural events, and a theatre experience created greater awareness about dementia. I am glad that we have brought culture to senior citizens who live outside the city, or who have trouble with trans- port due to their health or vulnerabilities. With 'Culture for All', 100 shows were held at care homes and commu- nity centres, and 1,000 people benefited from , theatre, concert and dance performances. All of this took place in collaboration with, among others, Aarhus School of Music, the Council for Amateur Culture and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. We will continue collaboration with a number of them over the coming years. Our efforts to create a more dementia-friendly city also saw us pursuing new ways of creating awareness about dementia in Aarhus. We entered into a unique collaboration with a theatre group and the shopping centre Bruuns Galleri to organise 72 half-hour performances, with free access for all interested citizens. The show CTRL+ALT+DEMENS attracted a lot of attention and media coverage, and we will restage that show this year – in parts at ARoS, and full-length in connection with the Aarhus Festival. The year of culture opened new doors for experiences and knowledge that make a difference.

PAGE 4 PAGE 2017 AARHUS CULTURE OF CAPITAL EUROPEAN | IMPACT 2017 affected the entire city's appetite for collabo- ration across culture, education, business and municipality. It has made us believe that anything is possible, and nothing is too great or too crazy. On top of that, Aarhus has gained priceless exposure in Denmark and abroad. People have become aware of our city's qualities. There's every reason to be proud of our city!

Bünyamin Simsek Alderman, Technical Services and Environment

Thousands of children participated in children's and cultural projects in 2017 and had unique experiences. Experiences that will stick in their memories. I am certain that in this way, Aar- hus 2017 will spark joy and inspiration for many years to come.

Thomas Medom Alderman, Children and Young People

With Aarhus as Capital of Culture 2017, we demonstrated that Aarhus is a diverse and creative city. This was not least due to the city's enthusiastic activists and many volun- teers. We must continue to build on this huge commitment and desire to be part of the city.

IMPACT | EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE AARHUS 2017 PAGE 5 PAGE 6 PAGE 2017 AARHUS CULTURE OF CAPITAL EUROPEAN | IMPACT This catalogue contains examples of some of the projects that were completed by the city of Aarhus in connection with European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017. Projects that have all had an impact.

This is not an exhaustive reference work, but rather a number of projects selected by the individual city departments. The projects vary greatly in their form and expression, but common to all of them is that they are based on the Capital of Culture vision about rethinking the existing and finding new and better ways of doing things.

European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 was an exploratorium where the city of Aarhus took the lead and rethought its core services. Every department contributed – both individually and in collaboration with other departments or external players.

One of the objectives of the European Capital of Culture was to increase collab- oration internally in the city of Aarhus. This mission has been successful. In addition to this, the projects are characterised by having reached out. Both in terms of new partnerships and collaboration forms, and in terms of citizen involvement and co-creation.

The intention is that the departments' work with the 2017 projects is to provide inspiration for policy development within all sectors in the city of Aarhus and that a clear cultural impact will be seen in a number of policies over the coming years.

The catalogue is intended to serve as examples for inspiration. A number of initiatives described in the language of each project, reflecting the common commitment to European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017.

In connection with the Capital of Culture year, Denmark's largest event for sustainable construction came to Aarhus for the first time. The City of Aarhus partnered with Building Green to gather the Danish construction industry for a 2-day conference with exhibition, debates and networking. The event, which had its debut in Aarhus at Centralværkstedet, was a success with 70 sold-out exhibition stands and more than 2,400 visitors. The focal point for Building Green is 'sustainability', which has many different meanings and implica- tions in the construction industry. At the event, professional special- ists and decision-makers challenge and discuss visions, technology and solutions that are crucial to the development of our future society.

• How do we build more sustainably? • How do we create liveability and a high quality of life in tomorrow's buildings and urban communi- ties? • How do we challenge the industry and each other's com petences in order to create new solutions in a complex context?

With increasing population growth and a visionary urban development strategy, Aarhus is undisputedly one of Denmark's largest develop- ment and growth centres, which means that the city is experiencing a construction boom.

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS FROM 2017 Considering the logo for the European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 with its characteristic white, rounded Aarhus letters and the rainbow colours, the idea was born for a transformed pedestrian crossing, with newly laid asphalt surfacing as a 'blank canvas'. The pedestrian crossing is a way of rethinking one of the tasks we perform at the Dept. of Technical Services and Environ- ment. The Regina intersection was selected as the place where European Capital of Culture 2017 could leave its mark in the urban space with the iconic Your Rainbow Panorama atop the ARoS museum on the horizon. Using large, rounded white thermoplastic sections and placing them at an oblique angle, the pedestrian street Strøget was joined together in a re-interpretation of a classical pedestrian crossing.

IMPACT | EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE AARHUS 2017 PAGE 57 YOUTH CULTURE HOUSE The vision for this cross-departmental project was to create a permanent youth culture house. Over the last four years, the centre (known as UKH) has been an attempt at developing a prototype for a culture house for young people with the purpose of examining and testing ideas for activities, envi- ronment and organisation. The ambition with UKH is to show that art and culture can strengthen bridge-building between people and between citizens and systems. UKH is the brainchild of young people in the City of Aarhus, and it has been helped along by European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017. UKH is supported by the three city departments Culture and Citzens' Ser- vices, Children and Young People, and Social Affairs and Employment. In addition to this, a large number of other players have backed the initiative. UKH has now been granted a permanent operating grant, and as it contin- ues to develop, it is constantly being rethought. This is both a quality and a necessity if you want to accommodate the different generations and types of young people who are associated with the place for a while.

In 2017, UKH put on the cultural festival IYAC – International Youth Art and Culture Festival – which received funding from Aarhus 2017. The festival will be repeated in 2018, this time called SPACE.

We want to develop, test and demonstrate an attractive biodiversity as an integrated part of the city's landscape, and through this qualify the concept of urban nature and offer Aarhus a new, distinctive, recreational oasis in the city – a new Aarhus 'Central Park'. Gellerup Film Workshop gives people aged 18-35 from Gellerup, and Aarhus V the chance to learn how to make films. The pivotal point of the project is to tell more stories from the outskirts of Aarhus. Young people are encouraged to stand by their personal stories, work with them through film, and present them to the wider world. Competent directors, producers, photographers and animators affiliated with Aarhus have been in charge of teaching on everything from scriptwriting to camera work, enabling the young people to try their hands at different roles in the world of film. In 2017, Gellerup Film Workshop collaborated with, among others, the Rap Academy and 365TEKSTER.

POV is a sim- ple and effective method for teach- ing the language and fundamental craft of film. The project is intended to be included in lessons, and the work with film storytelling has a positive rub-off effect on pupils' understanding of storytelling in general. In addition to giving the pupils some basic film production competences, POV strengthens their ability to communicate and practice their possibilities of doing well in society. The first project phase runs from 2016 to 2018 and focuses on development of the POV method, including experiments and teacher training. The second project phase continues in the years 2019 through 2021 with the establishment of competence centres in the City of Aarhus and the Central Denmark Region.

In an innovative cinematic exhibition without objects, The Journey took the spectator into a physical landscape placed in the middle of Moesgaard Museum. The story of man's journey, distended between birth and death was played out as a visual story. The Journey was more than a film, more than an exhibition. It was a spatial, sensual and visual experience that dug deep into the question about what we all have in common, in order to identify the basic condition for being human. The project supports Filmby Aarhus' strategy about putting digital visual competences into play outside traditional cinema and TV settings.

IMPACT | EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE AARHUS 2017 PAGE 73 REWILDING PROJECT IN GEDING KASTED MOSE Rewilding is about creating a new, better and more connected area of nature in the bog at Geding Kasted Mose. Biodiversity is improved, and the variation and dynamics of the landscape increase when nature is rewilded. The goal is to achieve a 140-hectare connected area of nature where adjoining arable land is included as new nature, making room in the landscape for the larger amount of rainfall expected in the future. The project reintroduces 'lost' physical, chemical and biological processes, e.g. grazing throughout the year, erosion, wire fencing, more water in the landscape, re-meandering of streams, fire, dead wood etc. The project creates better connec- tion in nature as well as connection and synergy with local afforestation to the northwest of Aarhus. The plan is to double the nature area. The purpose of the project is also to create better settings for nature experiences and active outdoor life for the citizens of the City of Aarhus.

With its strategic literature project ATLAS OF AARHUS, the publisher enriched the city with texts in differ- ent forms and formats.

The people of Aarhus were met by literature in urban spaces, for instance on banners and benches and via sound installations. The project also explored new distribu- tion forms, for instance by publish- ing literature on pizza boxes, city bikes and fictitious parking tickets stuck onto cars around the city. In the Øgade district, you can see a number of fictitious commemora- tive plaques written by Svend Åge Madsen; at the Freight Yard, you can read the world's longest poem on a concrete ramp, and around Lake , Louis Jensen has created a series of stories about nature and animals in the area.

ATLAS OF AARHUS has left a last- ing literary imprint in and around Aarhus with texts by local residents as well as Danish and foreign writ- ers, communicating literature to a large number of people.
