Rabih Azad-Ahmad Alderman, Culture and Citizens' Services The year as European Capital of Culture was a fantastic year for Aarhus – and for the entire Central Denmark Region. Never before has the city been visited by so many tourists, never have we had so many overnight stays at hotels, and never before have we experienced such extensive international media coverage. It is – and has been – a huge accomplishment by the city and the region, and it has been incredible to feel and experience the pride among everybody about what we have achieved together. The year as Capital of Culture has shown what we are capable of when we pull together – and what it takes for us to carry that success forward. Jacob Bundsgaard Mayor, Aarhus The Capital of Culture year gave a new boost to cultural life collaboration in Aarhus. More people gained access to cultural events, and a theatre experience created greater awareness about dementia. I am glad that we have brought culture to senior citizens who live outside the city, or who have trouble with trans- port due to their health or vulnerabilities. With 'Culture for All', 100 shows were held at care homes and commu- nity centres, and 1,000 people benefited from choir, theatre, concert and dance performances. All of this took place in collaboration with, among others, Aarhus School of Music, the Council for Amateur Culture and Aarhus Jazz Orchestra. We will continue collaboration with a number of them over the coming years. Our efforts to create a more dementia-friendly city also saw us pursuing new ways of creating awareness about dementia in Aarhus. We entered into a unique collaboration with a theatre group and the shopping centre Bruuns Galleri to organise 72 half-hour performances, with free access for all interested citizens. The show CTRL+ALT+DEMENS attracted a lot of attention and media coverage, and we will restage that show this year – in parts at ARoS, and full-length in connection with the Aarhus Festival. The year of culture opened new doors for experiences and knowledge that make a difference. Jette Skive Alderman, Health and Care PAGE 4 PAGE 2017 AARHUS CULTURE OF CAPITAL EUROPEAN | IMPACT 2017 affected the entire city's appetite for collabo- ration across culture, education, business and municipality. It has made us believe that anything is possible, and nothing is too great or too crazy. On top of that, Aarhus has gained priceless exposure in Denmark and abroad. People have become aware of our city's qualities. There's every reason to be proud of our city! Bünyamin Simsek Alderman, Technical Services and Environment Thousands of children participated in children's and cultural projects in 2017 and had unique experiences. Experiences that will stick in their memories. I am certain that in this way, Aar- hus 2017 will spark joy and inspiration for many years to come. Thomas Medom Alderman, Children and Young People With Aarhus as Capital of Culture 2017, we demonstrated that Aarhus is a diverse and creative city. This was not least due to the city's enthusiastic activists and many volun- teers. We must continue to build on this huge commitment and desire to be part of the city. Projects that have all had an impact. This is not an exhaustive reference work, but rather a number of projects selected by the individual city departments. The projects vary greatly in their form and expression, but common to all of them is that they are based on the Capital of Culture vision about rethinking the existing and finding new and better ways of doing things. European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 was an exploratorium where the city of Aarhus took the lead and rethought its core services. Every department contributed – both individually and in collaboration with other departments or external players. One of the objectives of the European Capital of Culture was to increase collab- oration internally in the city of Aarhus. This mission has been successful. In addition to this, the projects are characterised by having reached out. Both in terms of new partnerships and collaboration forms, and in terms of citizen involvement and co-creation. The intention is that the departments' work with the 2017 projects is to provide inspiration for policy development within all sectors in the city of Aarhus and that a clear cultural impact will be seen in a number of policies over the coming years. The catalogue is intended to serve as examples for inspiration. A number of initiatives described in the language of each project, reflecting the common commitment to European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017.
