Manuscripts on ancillary subjects (aquaculture, fishery biology, historical ichthyology and archaeology pertaining to fishes) will be considered subject to the availability of publication funds. Two series are produced at irregular intervals: the Special Publication series and the Ichthyological Bulletin series. Acceptance of manuscripts for publication is subject to the approval of reviewers from outside the Institute. Priority is given to papers by staff of the Institute, but manuscripts from outside the Institute will be considered if they are pertinent to the work of the Institute. Colour illustrations can be printed at the expense of the author. Publications of the Institute are available by subscription or in exchange for publi cations of other institutions. Thorstad NINA Report 325 NINA Publications NINA Report (NINA Rapport) This is a new, electronic series beginning in 2005, which replaces the earlier series NINA commis- sioned reports and NINA project reports. This will be NINA’s usual form of reporting completed research, monitoring or review work to clients. Skelton1 Resumo A descoberta e exploração dos peixes de água doce angolanos foi em grande parte levada a cabo por cientistas estrangeiros em expedições organizadas por entidades europeias e norte ‑americanas. O conhecimento actual dos peixes de água doce angolanos é brevemente descrito de acordo com os principais sistemas de drenagem, como Cabinda, o Baixo Congo, a região costeira angolana que inclui o rio Cuanza, os afluentes meridionais do Congo, mas também parte das bacias hidrográficas dos rios Zambeze, Cumbango, Cunene e Cuvelai. É apresentado um modelo biogeográfico para explicar a ictiofauna dulçaquícola de Angola. A necessidade de conservação dos peixes de água doce angolanos aumentará com as crescentes pressões antropogénicas sobre os ecossistemas aquáticos, devidas essencialmente à urbanização, às barragens para produção de energia, agricultura e neces‑ sidades humanas, à destruição do habitat pela mineração e desflorestação, poluição, introdução de espécies exóticas e sobrepesca. Lisboa, 2013 Abstract The years fly by but the African continet and its enourmos richness remains an undiscovered treasure. The Angolan province Cuando-Cubango includes one of the biggest watersheds of the African continent, the Cubango-Okavango river basin. One of the rivers where most parts remains untouched and in a pristine form. Ongoing water resources planning intends to regulate large parts of the basin and to intensify human uses. In order to better understand and to analize ecological responses of the Angolan part of this river basin, three main steps were conducted: The first one was to develop and to validate a geomorphological zonation in order to understand the evolution and the main characteristics of river planforms. In second place, the different fish species that inhabit the main water courses where taken into account and a fish zonation was designed for the entire watershed in order to establish biological responses based on the species’s needs and their connectivity dependence. -

Its goals include the conservation of biological diversity and wilderness in the Zambezi Basin through the application of sustainable, scientifically sound natural resource management strategies. -
