For twenty-one years, students have submitted their best scholarship to be reviewed by the Historical Perspectives editing committee, a team of students and faculty. This year, we were fortunate to have an Virile, Yet Feminine: Sport, Gender, and exceptional selection of papers to evaluate, reflecting the Representation in Fascist Italy high level of achievement of Santa Clara University’s history Andrea Dlugos.. 134 students. We would like to thank all students who submitted essays. The variety of research topics, theoretical Japan Disarmed: The Symbolism and Rejection of approaches, and writing styles illustrate the innovativeness the Defeated Soldier in Japanese Social Media and uniqueness of these pieces. While the following selection consists of papers that Ian Ghows.. 163 are distinct and cover a variety of geographic regions and eras, the overarching theme of identity unifies them. “We FUBAR: A Historical Perspective on the Status of should think of academic freedom,” wrote Edward Said, “as Women in the US Military an invitation to give up our obsession with our own identity Liz Marsden.. 189 in the hope of understanding, and perhaps even assuming, more than one.” These eight papers, organized chronologically, each contribute to our understanding of identity’s importance in the study of history. In Christina Forst’s paper dealing with infanticide cases in Victorian England, she discusses the pathologization of mothers who committed infanticide, and how their transgression affected how they were perceived by society. Maxine DeVincenzi also studies the Victorian era, specifically its death culture, and how burial practices helped define the period’s social identity. In her paper “Wicked California,” Michelle Khoury explores how Gold Rush California’s structureless society provided miners the freedom to engage in activities that were widely unaccepted elsewhere, allowing them to form their own identities through leisure. Maggie Woods’ work on World War I propaganda examines the romanticized, false identity of American soldiers in propaganda, which was used as a recruitment tool.     Evaluating the experience of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the career histories of elite equestrian athletes By Donna de Haan A Doctoral Thesis Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University March 2015 © D. de Haan 2015 ABSTRACT Equestrian sport has been present on the Modern Olympic programme since 1900 with Para-Equestrian Dressage making its debut at the 1996 Paralympic Games. Due to the combined governance of Olympic and Paralympic versions of the sport, the mixed gender of competition and the potential age range of competitors, equestrian sport provides an opportunity through which to understand a unique context of athlete experience. This thesis has sought to identify and evaluate athlete experience within the context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and to place this experience within the wider career histories of members of the British Equestrian Team. This study utilised a combination of a systematic literature review methodology and ethnographic data collection and analysis with a critical realist approach, creating a framework that values interpretive insights into how the subjects perceive and construct their world whilst at the same time considering ways in which the literature and individual subjects identify, comment on, and frame the reality of the world of equestrian sport. This study has resulted in the emergence of six themes pertaining to experiencing the games; equestrian sporting culture, identity, values, challenges, performance support and success. Results show many similarities and shared experiences for both the Olympic and Paralympic equestrian athletes. The differences regarding the lived experience for these athletes are predominantly associated with the development of the sport, the relative short Paralympic history of equestrian sport in comparison to the Olympic disciplines, and the place of the Games in the context of the riders’ career histories.

Ondina Valla e lo sport femminile durante il fascismo «Arrivederci a Tokyo». Ondina Valla and women’s sport during the fascist dictatorship Abstract Negli anni del regime fascista l’ideale della donna come «angelo del focolare» si conci- liava male con la partecipazione femminile alle attività sportive. Il fascismo, tuttavia, riservò una grande attenzione allo sport, servendosene sia come fattore di educazione e socializzazione delle masse, sia come veicolo di propaganda. La vicenda di Ondina Valla – vincitrice della corsa degli 80 metri a ostacoli alle Olim- piadi del 1936 – racchiude in sé questa contraddizione, giacché da un lato il regime in- tendeva utilizzare a livello propagandistico i successi dell’atleta, dall’altro si trovava di fronte a una figura che non rifletteva il modello di donna che si voleva imporre. La vicenda di Ondina Valla – vincitrice della corsa degli 80 metri a ostacoli alle Olim- piadi del 1936 – racchiude in sé questa contraddizione, giacché da un lato il regime voleva utilizzare a livello propagandistico i successi dell’atleta, dall’altro si trovava di fronte a una figura che non rifletteva l’ideale di donna che si voleva imporre. Il successo olimpico del 1936 contribuì, almeno in parte, a cambiare la percezione dello sport femminile e, più in generale, del ruolo della donna nella società da parte della pub- blica opinione. Vito Riolo, uno dei personaggi più intensi del territorio Etneo, non è stato felice del mancato coinvolgimento. Non solo lui ha contestato. Purtroppo non si riesce a comprendere che se non si trova un punto d’incontro continueranno le regressioni. - Quale il divario tra le aspettative e i risultati del Mondiale che ha declassato l’Italia nel medagliere e nella classifica a punti. L’Italia non è stata declassata né nel medagliere, né nella classifica a punti, per quanto mi riguarda, insieme a conferme importanti e a belle novità, ho preso atto che troppo diffusa è stata l’incapacità ad affrontare un evento internazionale cosi’ difficile e complesso con la dovuta preparazione. E per preparazione intendo quel vasto ambito di competenze necessarie ad affrontare un evento internazionale. Sono il sesto tifoso, (fra cotanto senno) più accanito della nostra atletica ma i numeri sono stati impietosi.
