Fox-Davies holds that the Church of Ireland and the Episcopal Chuich in Scotland lost their diocesan Coats of Arms on disestablishment, and that the Welsh Church will suffer the same loss when the Disestablishment Act comes into operation ( Public Arms). -

HAMMOND Ethnicity and the Writing of Medieval Scottish history1 ABSTRACT Historians have long tended to define medieval Scottish society in terms of interactions between ethnic groups. This approach was developed over the course of the long nineteenth century, a formative period for the study of medieval Scotland. At that time, many scholars based their analysis upon scientific principles, long since debunked, which held that medieval ‘peoples’ could only be understood in terms of ‘full ethnic packages’. This approach was combined with a positivist historical narrative that defined Germanic Anglo-Saxons and Normans as the harbingers of advances in Civilisation. While the prejudices of that era have largely faded away, the modern discipline still relies all too often on a dualistic ethnic framework. This is particularly evident in a structure of periodisation that draws a clear line between the ‘Celtic’ eleventh century and the ‘Norman’ twelfth. Furthermore, dualistic oppositions based on ethnicity continue, particu- larly in discussions of law, kingship, lordship and religion. Geoffrey Barrow’s Robert Bruce and the Community of the Realm of Scotland, first published in 1965 and now available in the fourth edition, is proba- bly the most widely read book ever written by a professional historian on the Middle Ages in Scotland.2 In seeking to introduce the thirteenth century to such a broad audience, Barrow depicted Alexander III’s Scot- land as fundamentally -

Aiken worked quietly and competently in the Columbia district mainly at coastal forts and on the steamer Beaver as a blacksmith until March 1, 1849 at which point he went to California, most certainly to participate in the Gold Rush. He appears to have returned to settle in the Willamette Valley and had an association with the HBC until 1852. Aiken's family life or subsequent activities have not been traced. -

Scotland: Bruce 286 Scotland: Bruce Robert the Bruce “Robert I (1274 – 1329) the Bruce holds an honored place in Scottish history as the king (1306 – 1329) who resisted the English and freed Scotland from their rule. He hailed from the Bruce family, one of several who vied for the Scottish throne in the 1200s. His grandfather, also named Robert the Bruce, had been an unsuccessful claimant to the Scottish throne in 1290. Robert I Bruce became earl of Carrick in 1292 at the age of 18, later becoming lord of Annandale and of the Bruce territories in England when his father died in 1304. “In 1296, Robert pledged his loyalty to King Edward I of England, but the following year he joined the struggle for national independence. He fought at his father’s side when the latter tried to depose the Scottish king, John Baliol. Baliol’s fall opened the way for fierce political infighting. In 1306, Robert quarreled with and eventually murdered the Scottish patriot John Comyn, Lord of Badenoch, in their struggle for leadership. Robert claimed the throne and traveled to Scone where he was crowned king on March 27, 1306, in open defiance of King Edward. “A few months later the English defeated Robert’s forces at Methven. Robert fled to the west, taking refuge on the island of Rathlin off the coast of Ireland. Edward then confiscated Bruce property, punished Robert’s followers, and executed his three brothers. A legend has Robert learning courage and perseverance from a determined spider he watched during his exile. “Robert returned to Scotland in 1307 and won a victory at Loudon Hill. -

Thomson When the editors of New Dictionary of National Biography were recently discussing ways in which the new edition is different from the old, they re marked that one of the changes is in the treatment of saints: The lives [of saints] are no longer viewed as straightforward stories with an unfor tunate, but easily discounted, tendency to exaggeration, but may now be valued more for what they reveal about their authors, or about the milieu in which they were written, than for any information they contain about their ostensible subjects (DNB 1998). This is a good note on which to begin the exploration of Magnus's saint hood. We need to concern ourselves with the historical Magnus - and Magnus has a better historical basis than many saints - but equally we need to explore the ways people have perceived his sainthood and often manipulated it for their own purposes. The Divided Earldom The great Earl Thorfinn was dead by I 066 and his earldom was shared by his two sons (fig. I). Kingdom of Strathclyde From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Strathclyde (lit. "Strath of the Clyde"), originally Brythonic Ystrad Clud, was one of the early medieval kingdoms of the Kingdom of Strathclyde Celtic people called the Britons in the Hen Ogledd, the Teyrnas Ystrad Clut Brythonic-speaking parts of what is now southern Scotland and northern England. The kingdom developed during the ← 5th century–11th → post-Roman period. It is also known as Alt Clut, the Brythonic century name for Dumbarton Rock, the medieval capital of the region. It may have had its origins with the Damnonii people of Ptolemy's Geographia. The language of Strathclyde, and that of the Britons in surrounding areas under non-native rulership, is known as Cumbric, a dialect or language closely related to Old Welsh. Place-name and archaeological evidence points to some settlement by Norse or Norse–Gaels in the Viking Age, although to a lesser degree than in neighbouring Galloway. A small number of Anglian place-names show some limited settlement by incomers from Northumbria prior to the Norse settlement. Due to the series of language changes in the area, it is not possible to say whether any Goidelic settlement took place before Gaelic was introduced in the High Middle Ages. After the sack of Dumbarton Rock by a Viking army from Dublin in 870, the name Strathclyde comes into use, perhaps reflecting a move of the centre of the kingdom to Govan. In the same period, it was also referred to as Cumbria, and its inhabitants as Cumbrians. During the High Middle Ages, the area was conquered by the Kingdom of Alba, becoming part of The core of Strathclyde is the strath of the River Clyde. -

He is evidently trying to show wie es eigentlich gewesen, letting the documents speak for themselves, a tact which can be a shortcoming for some, a strength for others. Although this work is flawed because of an obsession for particulars, Carsten nonetheless does remain impartial throughout. He does not betray any sympathies or antipathies to any of the parties involved and thus cannot be accused of political bias. Carsten 's painstakingly detailed study will therefore prove to be a source of valuable information for the specialist, breaking new ground in its field, but of little appeal to the general reader. Maps, appendices, glossary, abbreviations, notes, bibliography, index. $31.50. This well-written and erudite book is a fine example of the biographer's art well practiced and is destined to become a classic for scholars and dilettantes alike. It is at once a very good biographical study of the first Stewart earl of Orkney and an excellent constitutional history of the islanders over whom he reigned. Anderson's principal concern throughout the book is to place the career of Robert Stewart into the context of the factions, families, and feuds that shaped the history of sixteenth-century Scotland and her northern islands. To that end, Anderson, after briefly recapitu- lating the tumultuous history of the Orkney Islands as a Scottish dependency, presents the career of Robert Stewart as one of continuous interaction between Stewart and his family, his factions, the royal governments, and his Orcadian and Shetlander subjects. -

Introduction On 2 July, 1266, diplomatic representatives of King Magnus vi of Norway and King Alexander iii of Scotland convened in Perth to sign a treaty aimed at bringing political order to the unstable Norse-Scottish frontier.1 Three years earlier, Alexander iii had sponsored an invasion of the Inner Hebrides, territo- ries which had long been claimed by the Norwegian crown, prompting Magnus vi’s predecessor, King Hákon iv, to launch a colossal fleet to fight back the Scottish invaders and reestablish Norway’s preeminence over the isles around the Irish Sea. Despite its ambitious scale, the Norwegian fleet was driven back, leaving those proud possessions of the Norwegian crown in the hands of a for- eign ruler.2 But it was not until 1266 that the Scottish king’s practical lordship over the Hebrides was formalized in a finalis concordia, known more commonly as the Treaty of Perth.3 In a seemingly ancillary clause, Magnus vi emphasizes his lordship over two other island provinces, Orkney and Shetland, explaining that he was to retain the lordships, homages, rents and services from them to his own ‘dominion’.4 With this simple interpolation, the Norwegian king estab- lished a political regime that would come to shape the Norse-Scottish frontier and dictate the relations between the Norwegian and Scottish crowns for an- other two centuries until, in 1468/69, those isles also fell into the hands of a Scottish king, James iii.5 During that time, Orkney and Shetland represented 1 Diplomatarium Norvegicum, 21 vols.
