BIRN – Balkan Insight Disappointed Serbs Sell Up And Go 23 06 2006 Angry over the referendum result and fearful for the future, many Serbs are emigrating to central Serbia. By Bojana Stanisic in Pljevlja (Balkan Insight, 23 June 06) The villagers of Seoce, near Andrijevica, in northern Montenegro, are angry. The reason is the outcome of the May 21 referendum on independence, which Montenegrin separatists won by a large margin. Such is the indignation in Seoce, which voted "en masse" against sovereignty, that many locals have decided to sell up and emigrate to Sumadija, in central Serbia. They plan to move the whole village over the border and rename their new home Seoce. Villagers have made it clear that if any one buyer is interested in buying up the entire village, they would offer a substantial discount of up to 15 per cent. One would-be ex-Montenegrin is Stanoje Stijovic. "As soon as I sell my property I will move to Serbia," he said. "We plan to buy a whole village in Serbia and rename it Seoce out of love for our native land." The villagers protest that their departure is not a sign of indifference to the place many were born in, and in which many invested all their savings. "I invested my entire capital in my native village," said Vujica Mitrovic, who came all the way from Denmark, where he works, to vote in the referendum. "But I am deeply disappointed with the result, which is why I have decided to sell my whole estate - three houses in Andrijevica, a house in Seoce, another in Sutomore on the Adriatic coast and a country home in the Balja Mountain." Thirty-five villagers from Beranselo, near the town Berani in the north of Montenegro, have also put up their land and houses for sale, hoping for Albanian buyers. -

VILLA BUDVA OCTOBER, 2019 REPUBLIC OF MONTENEGRO Montenegro is a sovereign state in Southeastern Europe. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the southwest and is bordered by Croatia to the west, Bosnia and Herzegovina to the northwest, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, and Albania to the southeast. Its capital and largest city is Podgorica, while Cetinje is designated as the Old Royal Capital. Classified by the World Bank as an upper middle-income country, Montenegro is a member of the UN, NATO, the World Trade Organization, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe and the Central European Free Trade Agreement, and a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean. Montenegro uses the euro as its domestic currency, though it is not an official member of the eurozone. Net foreign direct investment in 2016 reached 755 million USD and investment per capita is one of the highest in Europe. CITY OF BUDVA Budva is a Montenegrin town on the Adriatic Sea. It has around 14,000 inhabitants, and it is the center of Budva Municipality, which includes neighboring towns of Becici and Petrovac. The coastal area around Budva, called the Budva riviera, is the center of Montenegrin tourism, known for its well-preserved medieval walled city, sandy beaches and diverse nightlife. Tourism is the main driver of the economy of Budva. It is a significant tourist destination on the eastern Adriatic, and by far the most popular destination in Montenegro. During the 2013, Budva recorded 668,931 tourist visits, and 4,468,913 overnight stays, thus accounting for 44,8 % of tourist visits to Montenegro, and 47,5 % of its overnight stays. -

And there are good reasons for that: The country was considered to be the fastest growing tourism market worldwide in 2007. Notwithstanding a slight decrease during the last years, tourism is still seen as a crucial factor for future economic development. This seems to be a viable option if we consider Montenegro’s natural potential, its beneficial position on the Adriatic coastline and the experience in tourism gained in the many years since the 1970s. These dynamic developments were motivation enough to explore tourism in Montene- gro in a research project with strong empirical evidence, organised as co-operation between Universities from Germany, Albania, Montenegro and Serbia. Our empirical approach included semi-structured, flexible interviews with different types of stakeholders. Since tourism in Montenegro is still almost entirely limited to the coast, we chose three coastal hot-spots in tourism, namely Kotor, Budva and Ulcinj. Our results show that the current development in tourism can surely be considered as progressive and dynamic. But it is also strongly affected by multiple polarisations and divergent trends. There is a need for infrastructural upgrades in the mass tourism sector, which is for the most part a low budget market with very difficult future perspectives. At the same time, there is a small but growing number of very exclusive offers, often seen as the vanguard of Montenegro’s future as an upper class tourists’ destination.
