It was released on August 20, 2016 exclusively on the iTunes digital store and Apple Music streaming service as a follow-up to the visual album Endless, released the day before under the same circumstances. First known as Boys Don't Cry with an initial release date scheduled for July 2015, the project has suffered several delays and has been a topic of great media waiting for the start of its release. The musical album has a more experimental and abstract sound than previous works by the artist and contains vocal performances by several artists, including Andre 3000, Beyonce, Yung Lean and Kim Burrell. The production was produced by Ocean, who joined a number of well-known music producers such as frequent collaborators Malay and Om'Mas Keith and Newto James Blake, John Brion, Pharrell Williams and Rostam Batmanglij. Shortly after commercialization began, Blonde debuted at the top of the charts in various territories, including the United Kingdom and the United States. Nikes, the first single from the album, was released simultaneously with Blonde. The album was recognized by critics specializing in contemporary music and was included in the list of best of the year from various publications. Background and design on February 21, 2013, Ocean confirmed that he had started production of his second studio album, which was later announced as a concept album. He said he was working on the project with Tyler, the Creator, Pharrell Williams and Danger Mouse. He later admitted that he felt influenced by The Beach Boys and The Beatles and that he was interested in collaborating with Tame Impala and King Krule, choosing Bora Bora as the dream spot for recording the album. However, Ocean eventually recorded the album at Electric Lady Studios in New York and, after a period described as the writer's block, continued recording the project in London at Abbey Road Studios, among other places. In April 2014 reported that his second album was almost finished. In June of the following year, Billboard magazine reported that the artist had worked with a number of singers, including Happy Perez, with whom he worked on Nostalgia, Ultra (2011) Charlie Gambetta and Kevin Rishro. At the same time, there were suggestions that hit-Boy, Rodney Jerkins and Danger Mouse producers would also be on the project. On November 29 of that year, Ocean posted an excerpt on Tumblr of the new grafted song Memrise, which was to be part of the track line-up of his second studio work. The theme was described by The Guardian as a song that states that despite the label's change and management, it has retained its experience and sense of melancholy in the years that have passed. Released and released on April 6, 2015, Ocean announced that its second studio work would be released next July, however, no further details were announced. Consequently, the album was not released on the announced date, without any explanation announced by the artist and his distributor. Months later, it was speculated that the name of the project in the production would be Boys Don't Cry and would contain Memrise in its track lineup. However, this did not happen. On July 2, 2016, the singer speculated on a possible second studio album through a post on his Web page, which is due for release the same month. The published image shows a library card with the inscription Boys Don't Cry with numerous stamps, imclicting several release dates. The first date was July 2, 2015 and ends in July 2016 and November 13, 2016. Ocean's brother, Ryan Brough, contributed to the speculation by posting the same library card on Instagram with the caption BOYS DON'T CRY #JULY2016. On August 1, 2016, a video was posted live on Apple Music showing an empty runner on boysdontcry.co. The page also unveiled a new design and video marked the first update on the website since the previous July publication. On August 1, 2016, a video was posted online showing Ocean playing and playing instruments. On the same day, several magazines announced that the Release Date of Boys Don't Cry will be August 5. The video was revealed to be part of the promotion for Endless, a 45-minute visual album broadcast on Apple Music on August 19. The next day, Ocean posted a new photo on his website showing four stores in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago and London. These stores contained hundreds of magazines, with three different covers and on a CD on each cover. The first cover - part of a collection of photographs called I'm a Morning Person - was made in Berlin, Germany by Wolfgang Tillmans, whose song Device Control was used as a sample on Endless's Device Control and Higgs. The alternative cover, which does not appear in the magazine but is one of the magazine's alternative covers, was photographed by Vivian Sassen in Tokyo, Japan, and was part of a collection of other photographs. ARE THE[SE] KIDS ALRIGHT?: STATES OF INCARCERATION AND SUBORDINATION IN THE LEARNING AND LIVED EXPERIENCES OF YOUTH IN A JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY by Jonathan Patrick Arendt A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Jonathan Patrick Arendt 2012 ARE THE[SE] KIDS ALRIGHT?: STATES OF INCARCERATION AND SUBORDINATION IN THE LEARNING AND LIVED EXPERIENCES OF YOUTH IN A JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY Doctor of Philosophy 2012 Jonathan Patrick Arendt Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning University of Toronto ABSTRACT This study examines the dynamics and implications of trans-spatial subordination in/across the lived experiences of six incarcerated participant youths in a secure custody facility for juveniles in Louisiana. Five male teenagers (four African American, one White) and one female teenager (African American) discuss the limitations, harassment, and confinement in various aspects of their lives and speak about the impact on their expectations for the future. The author employs several methodologies in order to develop a multimedia, multifaceted representation of their lives. The narratives elicited through interviews provide the bulk of the data as the participants describe this perpetual subordination. The photographs, resulting from the implementation of a visual ethnographic methodology, provide images that serve as catalysts for introspection and analysis of significance in the mundane and routine, particularly as they apply to the carceral facilities, structures, and policies themselves. Film viewing and discussion offer an array of depictions of youth and criminality to which the youths responded, granting a simultaneous peek at how these marginalized youths viewed themselves and how mainstream media productions depict them.

  • Mary Douglas: Purity and Danger
Purity and Danger This remarkable book, which is written in a very graceful, lucid and polemical style, is a symbolic interpretation of the rules of purity and pollution. Mary Douglas shows that to examine what is considered as unclean in any culture is to take a looking-glass approach to the ordered patterning which that culture strives to establish. Such an approach affords a universal understanding of the rules of purity which applies equally to secular and religious life and equally to primitive and modern societies. WRCU 2/10 ROTATIONS RIYL = Recommended If You Like Alone, Omen 3 by King Krule RIYL: Cosmo Pyke, Ariel Pink The chameleonic singer-songwriter is gearing up for the February 21st release of his next album, Man Alive!, with single "Alone, Omen 3", which displays elements of both the stark, rough-shod post-punk of his first record, 6 Feet Beneath the Moon, and the more eclectic art pop leanings of his second, The OOZ. But "Alone, Omen 3" also hints at a new, psychedelically inclined direction for Marshall, featuring a more understated vocal performance and a woozy, meditative tone. By Colin Jones Run by Joji RIYL: James Blake, Rejjie Snow George Kusunoki Miller began his online career as Filthy Frank (a sketch comedy act), transitioned to Pink Guy (a comedy rapper), and finally realized his full musical form as Joji, the lo-fi hip hop artist inspired by Donald Glover and influenced by electronic and R&B music. On “Run,” a haunting, mysterious electric guitar snakes its way through the song supported by heartbreaking lyrics. Imagine you’re driving along a coastal highway, top-down, feeling the wind, letting the song’s words wash over you, and thinking of your last great love...all while wearing a bad-ass, black leather jacket. That’s what this song is like. By Chase Garvey-Daniels Shangri-La by EOB RIYL: Radiohead, The Postal Service Shangri-la is one of three singles released ahead of Radiohead frontman Edward O'Brien’s upcoming album, which will be called “Earth”. MUSICAL BORROWING IN HIP-HOP MUSIC: THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS AND CASE STUDIES Justin A. Williams, BA, MMus Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2009 0 Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop Music: Theoretical Frameworks and Case Studies Justin A. Williams ABSTRACT ‗Musical Borrowing in Hip-hop‘ begins with a crucial premise: the hip-hop world, as an imagined community, regards unconcealed intertextuality as integral to the production and reception of its artistic culture. In other words, borrowing, in its multidimensional forms and manifestations, is central to the aesthetics of hip-hop. This study of borrowing in hip-hop music, which transcends narrow discourses on ‗sampling‘ (digital sampling), illustrates the variety of ways that one can borrow from a source text or trope, and ways that audiences identify and respond to these practices. Another function of this thesis is to initiate a more nuanced discourse in hip-hop studies, to allow for the number of intertextual avenues travelled within hip-hop recordings, and to present academic frameworks with which to study them. The following five chapters provide case studies that prove that musical borrowing, part and parcel of hip-hop aesthetics, occurs on multiple planes and within myriad dimensions. These case studies include borrowing from the internal past of the genre (Ch. 1), the use of jazz and its reception as an ‗art music‘ within hip-hop (Ch. 2), borrowing and mixing intended for listening spaces such as the automobile (Ch. 3), sampling the voice of rap artists posthumously (Ch. 4), and sampling and borrowing as lineage within the gangsta rap subgenre (Ch.

The Influence of Rap/Hip-Hop Music: A Mixed-Method Analysis by Gretchen Cundiff — 71 The Influence of Rap/Hip-Hop Music: A Mixed-Method Analysis on Audience Perceptions of Misogynistic Lyrics and the Issue of Domestic Violence Gretchen Cundiff* Strategic Communications Elon University Abstract Using a qualitative content analysis and online survey, this research examined how college students perceive and respond to the portrayal of women when exposed to misogynistic lyrics. Based on cultivation theory, this study analyzed the lyrical content of popular rap and hip-hop songs (n=20) on Billboard’s “Hot 100” chart between 2000 and 2010. Song lyrics were classified into one or more of the following coding categories: demeaning language, rape/sexual assault, sexual conquest and physical violence. Themes of power over, objectification of and violence against women were identified as prevalent throughout the content analysis sample. Survey results indicated a positive correlation between misogynous thinking and rap/hip-hop consumption. I. Introduction This study examined the culture of rap/hip-hop music and how misogynistic lyrical messages influ- enced listeners’ attitudes toward intimate partner violence. Adams and Fuller (2006) define misogyny as the “hatred or disdain of women” and “an ideology that reduces women to objects for men’s ownership, use, or abuse” (p. 939). Popular American hip-hop and rap artists, such as Eminem, Ludacris and Ja Rule, have increasingly depicted women as objects of violence or male domination by communicating that “submission is a desirable trait in a woman” (Stankiewicz & Rosselli, 2008, p. 581). These songs condone male hegemony in which “men find the domination and exploitation of women and other men to be not only expected, but actu- ally demanded” (Prushank, 2007, p.
