We affirm with praise and thanksgiving the goodness of our Lord. Let us rejoice in God’s presence with us, in death as in life among those who mourn as with those who now see Christ face to face. In the midst of our grief we sing with joy, for God’s love is over all that has been made. Blessed be God’s glorious name forever. *Prayer Bishop Taylor Tender and compassionate God, we seek to know you through the hearing of your Word and pray that we may go beyond hearing to obeying, as shown by the faithful lives of your departed servants whom we honor today. We know that they are precious in your eyes, worthy of your special attention and ours, for they served well in the task that you gave them. Grant that we may feel your presence As did the followers who knew Jesus in the breaking of the bread, and may we experience the fire within that sent them out to share good news. Amen. Prayer for the Saints and Faithful Departed Bishop Taylor Everliving God, this day revives in us memories of loved ones who are with us no more. What happiness we shared when they walked among us. What joy, when, loving and being loved, we lived our lives together. Their memory is a blessing for ever. Months or years may have passed, and still we feel near to them. Our hearts yearn for them. Though the bitter grief has softened, duller pain abides; for the place where once they stood is empty now. The links of life are broken, but the links for love and longing cannot break. Their souls are bound up in ours for ever. We see them now with the eye of memory, their faults forgiven, their virtues grown larger. So does goodness live, and weakness fade from sight. We remember them with gratitude and bless their names. Their memory is a blessing for ever. And we remember as well the members who but yesterday were part of our congregations and communities. To all who cared for us and labored for all people, we pay tribute. May we prove worthy of carrying on the tradition of our faith, for now the task is ours. Their souls are bound up in ours for ever. If the world’s ending, I’m pretty sure a good portion of us want to go out in a gutsy glory– wielding machetes, slinging guns and toting around… a water filtration system? Yes, this is an actual thing Fear the Walking Dead star Mercedes Mason insists on bringing if the apocalypse were to ever happen in real life. A nerdy, yet totally logical response and damn, we’re definitely thinking we’d want her to join our survival team. Mason, who plays Ofelia Salazar, a sheltered and emotionally stunted young woman whose family dynamic is not ideal for prospering in a dire situation like a zombie apocalypse, is among the stars to set sail on an epic journey of outliving a mass epidemic that has destroyed Los Angeles. And quite possibly the world. Though the group doesn’t know exactly what’s going on at this point, just that a mysterious flu has quarantined their gritty city, and the only way out is through a seemingly safe passage with a shifty survivor named Victor Strand (Colman Domingo). Now on the yacht, these strangers are being bombarded by ‘the infected,’ and it’s pretty clear that their fight will not only be against the undead, but each other as well. What happens when the world goes to hell and you’re forced to work with people you don’t know? Can you trust your neighbors, your family, the people sharing close quarters with you? When humanity is still in tact, do your chances of survival decline? Questions these characters, and the audience will continue to ask themselves throughout the season.

International lines done away with following the world’s end, our characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but family as well. Madison has reconnected with Travis but Alicia has been fractured by her murder of Andres. Mere miles from his mother, Nick’s first action as a leader saw Luciana ambushed by an American militia group – the couple escaped death but Nick no longer feels immortal. Recovering both emotionally and physically, Strand has his sights set on harnessing the new world’s currency, and Ofelia’s captivity will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father. 3 CAST + CHARACTERS 4 4 MADISON CLARK (Kim Dickens) “The devil you know…” In season three, Madison moves beyond mercy. She promises herself never to repeat the mistakes of the past. If that means she must embrace brutality, so be it. As Madison evolves over the course of this season, we will see her turn even darker. Her ends are pure, but her means are morally compromised. She will sacrifice compassion – and she will risk those she holds most dear. In pursuit of Nick, Madison leads Travis and Alicia through the aftermath of the battle that ended season two – a fight that could have taken Nick and Luciana’s lives.

That honey-tongued Mexican American dude who can help the white guy with his golf game while, more important, imparting life lessons before disappearing over the horizon? He doesn't exist. That Salvadoran woman wisely guiding the "Chosen One" — another white guy — through an alternate-reality maze to his appointed destiny? You won't find her. A Latino playing God as he gives up control of planet Earth to help a funny white TV reporter having a bad day at the office? Get out of here. Since the Academy Award nominations were announced, much of the #OscarsSoWhite conversation has focused on black actors. But consider Latinos, the nation's largest minority group, even if Hollywood very often doesn't. Social media erupted recently with "whitewashing" accusations after the film "American Drug Lord" gave the starring role of Mexican American cartel kingpin Edgar "La Barbie" Valdez to the British actor Charlie Hunnam. British actor Charlie Hunnam was cast as Mexican American cartel kingpin Edgar "La Barbie" Valdez in the film "American Drug Lord." (Don Kelsen / Los Angeles Times) But that dust-up distracts from a problem that reaches deeper into the casting process. Latinos have a particularly hard time getting even the kinds of cliched supporting roles that have become commonplace for black actors — the wise or wisecracking, sometimes magical guides for white protagonists.

Hugh, my Co-Director in the Marist Brothers Development ofce for the past almost 30 years, embraced a new chapter in his life. Due to health issues, Br. Hugh decided it was time to retire as Co-Director of Development. Br. Hugh’s retirement meant an out-of-state move to a Marist Brothers retirement facility, and that hit a lot of us very hard. I miss him in the ofce, where we worked side by side, fve days a week, for nearly three decades, as we started and built up the Development Ofce to where it is today. Although Br. Hugh is on my speed dial–always there for long-distance counsel–everyone has embraced the “new normal” and focused on the blessings God continues to bring us. I want to begin with our kind and generous benefactors who bring the fnancial assistance our Brothers count on to continue their ministries with young people.     Fear The Walking Dead Season 2b Trailer released to rave reviews Author : Robert D. Cobb “We’re not going to make it”. Ofelia Salazar can be heard saying in the new trailer that was released at the San Diego Comic-Con for Fear the Walking Dead. Season 2a ended with the supposed death of Daniel Salazar, Ofelia’s father, when he torched the walkers in the Abigail compound, causing everyone to flee. The flames drew walkers from all over making everyone flee. Travis Manawa went after his son Chris who exiled himself due to his ever-growing violent tendencies after the death of his mother. Nick Clark told his mother, Madison, that he does not need them and leaves to walk with the undead. Madison, Alicia, Ofelia and Victor Strand leave together. This trailer shows the struggles that Nick will face on his own. He has been shot in one scene, wherein another a mysterious Mexican doctor cures him and tells him, “It’s okay not to be scared to death, but that does not mean you should follow death.” This is due to Nick’s cult-like fascination with the dead. It seems that this cult-like fascination has also been adopted by a Mexican religion that has a fascination with death. Nick also runs into Mexican drug-cartel members with whom it seems that he gets into a beef with. These people love this lawless society. Chris and Travis are seen fighting with zombies as well as discussing if they should reunite with the Clark’s or not.

Nuruddin Doctoral Candidate, TESOL & World Language Education Language & Literacy Education Department, The College of Education The University of Georgia, Athens, GA [email protected] ABSTRACT Popular culture reinforces and shapes the beliefs and values of the individual, the community, and the masses. It can also transmit hidden messages about aspects of human behavior that are reiterated in scholarly research. In the field of education, particularly in world language teacher education, film and television can be used as an effective tool for examining how we acquire a second language. Using a symbolic convergence theory perspective (SCT) (Bormann, 1972), I employ Sellnow’s (2014) three-step process for the rhetorical analyses of mediated popular culture texts to reveal “covert messages” (p. 9) within the popular American Movie Channel (AMC) television series, Fear the Walking Dead (FTWD). These messages inform how second language and culture acquisition develop and serve as life-saving resources in extreme cases of cultural and linguistic isolation. In Season 1 of FTWD, Nicholas “Nick” Clark, embarks on an unintentional language and cultural immersion trip to Mexico. His experience reflects research on second language and culture acquisition, reinforcing the understanding that languages can be learned rapidly when it is a matter of survival. My analysis will show that while language learning can transpire through a formally-structured classroom experience, it can also transpire informally—through a Vygotskian (1978), sociocultural, “survivalist” language and culture learning experience—as reflected in FTWD.
