Annual Development 201Newsletter9 and Honor Roll of Donors The MaristProvince of the United Brothers States The mission of the Marist Brothers is to bring Christian education to youth, especially those most neglected. Dear Friends, hat a year it’s been–so many blessings and a few difcult moments, too. Since we sent you last year’s Annual Newsletter and Honor Roll Wof Donors, Br. Hugh, my Co-Director in the Marist Brothers Development ofce for the past almost 30 years, embraced a new chapter in his life. Due to health issues, Br. Hugh decided it was time to retire as Co-Director of Development. Br. Hugh’s retirement meant an out-of-state move to a Marist Brothers retirement facility, and that hit a lot of us very hard. I miss him in the ofce, where we worked side by side, fve days a week, for nearly three decades, as we started and built up the Development Ofce to where it is today. Although Br. Hugh is on my speed dial–always there for long-distance counsel–everyone has embraced the “new normal” and focused on the blessings God continues to bring us. I want to begin with our kind and generous benefactors who bring the fnancial assistance our Brothers count on to continue their ministries with young people. Your gifts support our Marist Brothers’ dedication to educating children and preparing young students for a better future. Your gifts also help us to care for our elderly and disabled Brothers–like Br. Hugh. From my heart, I thank you! As I move forward into my new role as sole Director of Development, I also celebrate the past–from my 30 years working beside Br. Hugh, to this most recent year’s loyal benefactors who so generously made a gift to the Marist Brothers. Your continued fnancial and prayerful support will strengthen the goals Br. Hugh set for the Marist Brothers Development Ofce from its inception. For now, I invite you to catch up on the latest happenings in the Development Ofce and throughout the Province. It’s a quick look at what your dedication supports–and why we are so thankful for your presence within our Marist Family. With great appreciation, Paulette M. Karas, CFRE Director of Development 2 2019 MARIST ANNUAL NEWSLETTER Br. Hugh Turley, FMS Retires from the Development Ofce! or the past nearly thirty years Br. Hugh Turley, FMS, has served as Co-Director of the Marist Brothers Development Ofce along with Paulette Karas. During these years, the two of them have worked untiringly to promote the Marist Mission and to invite literally thousands of individuals to join with them in this efort through their prayers, support, and very generous fnancial contributions.F In October 2018, Br. Hugh moved from Chicago to the Marist Retirement Community on the campus of Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx, New York. While still actively interested in the progress of the Province Development Ofce, these days he is directly benefting from the wonderful physical and spiritual care that the generosity of so many of our Marist friends have made possible for our elderly brothers. In a recent interview with Br. John Klein, Br. Hugh refected on the following aspects of his life and ministry as a Marist Brother: Br. Hugh, could you tell us something about your vocation story…your decision to become a Marist Brother? First, I grew up in an Irish, Catholic family where faith and family were the key values. Both my parents were immigrants and they instilled in each of their six children the importance of education and the practice of the faith. In fact, each day we prayed the Rosary together as a family. I believe that this helped form the foundation of my vocation. Second, I was strongly infuenced by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn, who were my elementary school teachers, and by the Marist Brothers, who taught me at St. Agnes High School in Manhattan. When the Marist Vocation Director invited me to consider a vocation, it just felt like the right thing to do, and at 15 years of age I entered the Marist High School Juniorate in Esopus, New York. How did you come to be involved in the Marist Brothers Development Program? When I was around 52 years old and teaching in Jackson, Mississippi, Br. Sean Sammon, our Provincial at the time, met with me to explain a variety of Province needs. In order to address some of the fnancial concerns, he asked me to become the frst Director of a Province Development Ofce. At the same time, he mentioned that he wanted me to commit to serve in this capacity for 10 years in order to guarantee the success of the efort. The thought of a 10-year commitment took me aback, but l could not have anticipated at that time that I would still be in that role three decades later! What have you learned through this Ministry? I have learned, and been humbled, by the goodness of our Lay Marist friends who instinctively pick up the Marist spirit. I have learned how important it is to listen to other people involved in development work from other religious congregations. Over the years they have generously shared their insights and expertise. I have also learned after countless telephone conversations and visits that many donors are anxious to share their own personal concerns and hopes. As a result, fundraising has become a real ministry for me. Finally, I have come to appreciate that our donors respond to our invitation for support when it strikes a reasonable chord of authenticity and real need with them. People truly do not contribute because they are looking for a tax advantage, but because they believe in the mission. As you look back on your life and ministry, what are you most grateful for? When I completed our Second Novitiate Renewal program in 1989, I decided to refect with gratitude each day on the many things I was grateful for. Consequently, I formed my own Five Decades of the Rosary that focused on the fve things for which I was particularly grateful and I have prayed this every day since. They are: 1. My good health 2. My family…my brother and four sisters 3. Paulette Karas, who has been my right arm and invaluable colleague 4. The Marist Brothers and my vocation 5. My role in the Development Ofce that drew on my talents and abilities I have been very grateful throughout my life. This has made life a lot easier. 2019 MARIST ANNUAL NEWSLETTER 3 LaValla League ach year in a spirit of gratitude and recognition we recognize new members to the LaValla League, in appreciation of their 10 consecutive years of giving to the Marist Brothers Annual Fund appeal. WeE chose the name “LaValla,” for LaValla was the name of the village in southern France where the Marist Brothers began in 1817. “LaValla” embodies the sentiments of allegiance and of beginnings. In gratitude for their kindness and generosity, each new member has received a unique, commemorative pewter medallion of St. Marcellin Champagnat encased in lucite. This year we are proud to announce the addition of the following 48 new members, bringing the new total of LaValla League members to 1,278. Congratulations!
