Agenda item: (to be completed by Board staff) USF Board of Trustees ( March 7, 2013) Issue: Proposed Ph.D. in Integrative Biology ________________________________________________________________ Proposed action: New Degree Program Approval ________________________________________________________________ Background information: This application for a new Ph.D is driven by a recent reorganization of the Department of Biology. The reorganization began in 2006 and was completed in 2009. The reorganization of the Department of Biology, in part, reflected the enormity of the biological sciences, and in part, different research perspectives and directions taken by the faculty in each of the respective areas of biology. Part of the reorganization was to replace the original Ph.D. in Biology with two new doctoral degrees that better serve the needs of the State and our current graduate students by enabling greater focus of the research performed to earn the Ph.D. The well-established and highly productive faculty attracts students to the Tampa Campus from all over the United States as well as from foreign countries. The resources to support the two Ph.D. programs have already been established in the Department of Biology and are sufficient to support the two new degree programs. The reorganization created two new departments; the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (CMMB) and the Department of Integrative Biology (IB). This proposal addresses the creation of a new Ph.D., in Integrative Biology offered by the Department of Integrative Biology (CIP Code 26.1399). These swamps currently face a number of threats, such as saltwater intrusion, yet the impacts to herpetofaunal communities have not been assessed. Saltwater intrusions into the upper reaches of coastal rivers contribute to their salinity gradients, which can influence associated plant and animal communities. Our study assessed the reptile and amphibian diversity along a salinity gradient in the upper estuary of the Savannah River to further predictive capabilities regarding herpetofauna. -

Miscellaneous Amphibians and Reptiles The following amphibian and reptile species are currently listed as species of concern in South Carolina by The South Carolina Heritage Trust program. These species do not fit logically into any guild or group and are not the highest priority for conservation action in our state simply because we do not know enough about them to make a judgment. Therefore, they are included in this plan because of data deficiencies and the potential risk of overlooking a species in need. For most of these species, the primary conservation objective will be to determine their status through survey in South Carolina. Black Swamp Snake Seminatrix pygaea The black swamp snake is a semi-aquatic species that inhabits a variety of wetland types. This species is typically associated with wetlands that have abundant aquatic vegetation, including water lilies and other emergent species. The black swamp snake was added to the list of Species of Concern during the first South Carolina Endangered Species Symposium (1978) due to the perception that it was an uncommon species. The current rank is unknown in South Carolina (S?) and stable globally (G5). The black swamp snake is a poor overland disperser and loses body water rapidly (Winne et al. 2001); therefore, this species may be less able to re- colonize habitats once extirpated (Seigel 1995). Recent survey techniques developed to sample semi-aquatic reptiles have revealed that this species is more widespread and more common than previously believed. The species has been documented on the Savannah River Site, Donnelly Wildlife Management Area and Charleston Naval Weapons Station in recent years (SCDNR surveys). -

Since only six species are venomous, and two of those reside only in the northern part of the state, any snake you encounter will most likely be nonvenomous. Price and Michael E. Dorcas Davidson College Davidson, NC 28078 Project 1: Carolina Herp Atlas Job 1. Carolina Herp Atlas Objective 1. Provide detailed locality data on the reptiles and amphibians of the Carolinas, in particular those species whose distribution and status is poorly known. Accomplishments: The CHA was officially launched in March 2007. Prior to the launch, the Davidson College Herpetology Lab imported approximately 3900 records, primarily from Mecklenburg, Iredell, and Cabarrus counties in the western Piedmont of North Carolina. From March 2007 through November 16, 2010, the CHA totaled 839 registered users, 91 of which identified South Carolina as their home residence. The CHA received 4930 reptile and amphibian records from South Carolina. Of these 5008 records, 912 were accompanied by voucher photograph and/or given a status of 10. A total of 122 South Carolina reptile and amphibian species have at least 1 record in the CHA. Thus far, the CHA has collected species-level, distribution data on 151 species of amphibians and reptiles, including the occurrence of 32 anurans, 29 salamanders, 37 snakes, 11 lizards, 14 turtles, and the American alligator. The most commonly reported species include yellowbelly slider (Trachemys scripta; 341 records), banded watersnake (Nerodia fasciata; 277 records), southern cricket frog (Acris gryllus; 173 records), eastern worm snake (Carphophus amoenus; 169 records), black racer (Coluber constrictor; 147 records), cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus; 142 records), , Southern Leopard Frog (Rana sphenocephala; 132 records), rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta; 132 records) Cope’s Gray treefrog (Hyla chrysoscelis; 131 records).
