  • I Need Fish Fingers and Custard”: the Irruption and Suppression of Vegan Ethics in Doctor Who
Chapter 11 “I Need Fish Fingers and Custard”: The Irruption and Suppression of Vegan Ethics in Doctor Who Matthew Cole and Kate Stewart Doctor Who, produced by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), is the world’s longest running television science fiction series, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2013. The original ‘classic’ run of Doctor Who was broadcast in the UK between 1963–1989, before going on hiatus, excepting a 1996 TV movie, although the programme retained a cultural presence through the production of new stories in alternative media formats and in video and DVD releases of the ‘classic’ series. The television series was rebooted in 2005 and has been in continuous production since. Both classic and new series Doctor Who targets a ‘family’ audience, thereby engaging children and their caregivers in a com- munal viewing experience. This is reflected in the Saturday tea-time (approxi- mately 5pm) scheduling of the original programme in the UK and in its current scheduling early on Saturday evenings (around 7pm). It thereby provides an opportunity for the inter-generational reproduction, or critique, of cultural and ethical norms through the stories it tells and especially the behavior of the central characters and their relations with alien ‘others’. The Doctor him- self is a member of an alien species, a Timelord from the planet Gallifrey, who has the technological capacity to travel through time and space. The Doctor appears human, with his alien-ness being marked by his technological prowess, longevity, nonhuman anatomy (such as having two hearts) and a range of character quirks that vary with each incarnation.

  • I Am the Doctor, Whether You Like It Or Not
Colin Baker. The Doctor who will be remembered by many readers of this article as the only actor to play the part indubitably to have been dismissed by his BBC employers. Even before this unhappy event his characterisation had proved one of the most controversial in the programme's history. ‘Change, my dear. And it seems not a moment too soon.’ Thus spoke the sixth Doctor as he confronted an incredulous Peri and a more accommodating audience in the final part of The Caves of Androzani on March 21, 1984. However, one could say that Colin Baker had been the Doctor for as long as seven months, as it had been in August 1983 that the BBC had presented him as the Fifth Doctor's successor. It was thought in some quarters at the time that Colin Baker was the ideal Doctor of the BBC executives, thought to be reflected in his much-reported ambition to outlast Tom Baker's seven season tenure, and in the outlandish costume premiered at the January photocall, indicating the contrast between the sixth Doctor's outspoken ebullience and his predecessor's subdued — some may think even bland — character. One criticism of the Peter Davison Doctor had been that he, and the stories in which he appeared, lacked humour. The secret of success appeared to lie in the overstatement for which it was thought the public remembered Tom Baker (still the Doctor to much of the audience in 1983/4) and this was reinforced in Colin's first script. ‘I am the Doctor, whether you like it or not.’ The Twin Dilemma was a decisive break with what had been built up over the previous four seasons, but in a sense fulfilled it.

  • 'Went the Day of the Daleks Well?' an Investigation Into the Role Of
Tony Keen ‘Invasion narratives in British television Science Fiction’ ‘Went the Day of the Daleks well?’ An investigation into the role of invasion narratives in shaping 1950s and 1960s British television Science Fiction, as shown in Quater- mass, Doctor Who and UFO If the function of art is to hold a mirror up to society, then science fiction (sf), through the distorted reflection it offers, allows the examination of aspects of society that might otherwise be too uncomfortable to confront. This essay aims to look at how invasion narratives, stories concerned with the invasion of Britain from outside, shaped three British science fiction series, and how those series interro- gated the narratives. The series will primarily be examined through aesthetic and social ap- proaches. Particular areas to be explored include the embracing and subverting of common assumptions about Britain’s attitude to invasion, and the differing attitudes to the military displayed. Introduction As an island nation, the prospect of invasion has always occupied a prominent place in the British popular imagination. According to Sellar and Yeatman, the two memorable dates in history are 55 BC and 1066, the dates of the invasions of Julius Caesar and William the Con- queror.1 Subsequent events such as the Spanish Armada of 1588 are also well-known mo- ments in history. It is inevitable that the prospect of invasion should produce speculative literature. Some works appeared around the time of Napoleon’s threatened invasion of 1803,2 but ‘invasion literature’ as a literary genre emerged out of the growing market for novels and short-story magazines, and is generally considered to have begun with the appearance of George Tomp- kyns Chesney’s 1871 story ‘The Battle of Dorking’,3 a story of the German conquest of Eng- land, prompted by the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871.

Please see our Privacy Notice for details of your data protection rights. Doctor Who has been on our screens sincewhen the science-fiction series everyone has come to know and love took viewer's breath away with its magic and adventure. Over the years we've seen 13 Doctors come and go, but the very first to take on the role was actor William Hartnell, who played The Doctor for three years, and his exit was very different to that of his successors. Hartnell had enjoyed a long and successful career in film and television before he took on the role as The Doctor, and he was the oldest actor to take on such responsibility. Many previous stars gave the usual spiel about taking on "new challenges" and leaving the show at "the right time" but William's departure wasn't out of choice. The actor, who first made his appearance in the episode entitled An Unearthly Child as an eccentric grandfather, suffered from a medical condition that restricted blood flow, which affected his ability to remember and deliver lines. While nowadays it wouldn't be much of a hinderance to production, back then it was very different. With producers working to tight timings and budgets and rarely able to film multiple takes, there are instances where Hartnell stumbles over his words, some of which can be seen in the classic episodes which are still available to watch today.

Of course, this was my own particular choice and therefore very subjective. What’s one man’s junk etc. Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who was one of those shows, even though at that time it was taking a rather longer than expected sabbatical. Over the last twenty years there’s been no shortage of writers wanting to share their love of the world’s longest running science fiction series and on the following pages are a selection of some of them. It’s amazing to think that nearly sixty years has passed since we first entered that police box in a junk yard in Totters Lane and were whisked away on one of television’s greatest adventures. Adventures that are still unfolding today. If you want to read more then pop along to the website at televisionheaven.co.uk where, as well as Doctor Who you will find reviews on over a thousand shows, articles (some serious, some light hearted), biographies and a fair bit of television history.
