Abstract – Valvata cristata is mostly documented in Alsace by data anterior to 1919. Only one recent locality, at Offendorg (Bas-Rhin) confirms the occurrence of this species in this area. In this paper, a new locality is added, a reed bed alimented by phreatic water near Eschau (Bas-Rhin) where two living specimens were collected in April 2011. Considering the current species distribution, I propose to include Valvata cristata under the category “rare” in the Red List of the molluscs from Alsace. Zospeum tholussum sp. n. is characterized based on a population from the Lukina Jama–Trojama cave system (Ve lebit Mts., Croatia). A single living specimen occurred at 980 m depth. The species is morphologically related to Zospeum amoenum (Frauenfeld, 1856), but can be readily distinguished from the latter by the presence of a weak columellar fold and its domelike structured 2nd whorl. DNA barcoding is capable to clearly delineate Z.

Molecular Ecology Resources (2010) doi: 10.1111/j.1755-0998.2010.02937.x DNA BARCODING A new approach to an old conundrum—DNA barcoding sheds new light on phenotypic plasticity and morphological stasis in microsnails (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Carychiidae) ALEXANDER M. WEIGAND,* ADRIENNE JOCHUM,* MARKUS PFENNINGER,† DIRK STEINKE‡ and ANNETTE KLUSSMANN-KOLB*,† *Institute for Ecology, Evolution and Diversity, Siesmayerstrasse 70, Goethe-University, 60323 Frankfurt am Main, Germany, †Research Centre Biodiversity and Climate, Siesmayerstrasse 70, 60323 Frankfurt am Main, Germany, ‡Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, 50 Stone Road West, Guelph, ON N1G 2V7, Canada Abstract The identification of microsnail taxa based on morphological characters is often a time-consuming and inconclusive process. Aspects such as morphological stasis and phenotypic plasticity further complicate their taxonomic designation. In this study, we demonstrate that the application of DNA barcoding can alleviate these problems within the Carychiidae (Gastro- poda, Pulmonata). These microsnails are a taxon of the pulmonate lineage and most likely migrated onto land indepen- dently of the Stylommatophora clade. Their taxonomical classification is currently based on conchological and anatomical characters only. Despite much confusion about historic species assignments, the Carychiidae can be unambiguously subdi- vided into two taxa: (i) Zospeum species, which are restricted to karst caves, and (ii) Carychium species, which occur in a broad range of environmental conditions. The implementation of discrete molecular data (COI marker) enabled us to cor- rectly designate 90% of the carychiid microsnails. The remaining cases were probably cryptic Zospeum and Carychium taxa and incipient species, which require further investigation into their species status. Because conventional reliance upon mostly continuous (i.e.

However, there is very limited information about the biology, ecology and population structure of this species. Knowledge about the population characteristics of this mussel before the exploitation phase is very important for the management of this species in the future. On the other hand this study is the first record of the swan mussel from Lake Çıldır and determination of the growth and flesh yield of Anodonta cygnea in this lake will be the basic reference for further studies on fisheries and processing activities. The mean shell length of the specimens was 104.2±0.52 mm (±SE of average) (range 49.8-136.8 mm) and mean live weight 94.8±1.42 g. The relationship between shell length and live weight was estimated as W = 0.0001 L2.88 (r = 0.96). Linear relationship was found between dry flesh weight and shell length (DFW = 0.052 L - 2.3721, r = 0.99).

  • Summary of North American Blancan Nonmarine Mollusks1
MALACOLOGIA , 1966, 4(1): 1-172 SUMMARY OF NORTH AMERICAN BLANCAN NONMARINE MOLLUSKS1 D. W. Taylor U. S. Geological Survey, and Research Associate, University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U. S. A. ABSTRACT All known North American nonmarine mollusks of Blancan (late Pliocene and early Pleistocene) age have been here fitted into the available framework of associated fossils, physical stratigraphy and radiogenic potassium-argon dates. Many of the independently dated molluscan assemblages are so similar to other faunas that most of the fossils summarized can be assigned confidently to the Blancan age. These assignments permitted compilation of lists of last appear- ances of genera and families that are unknown during or after Blancan times. About 50-55 Blancan assemblages are known, and together with about 10-15 older or younger faunas included for convenience of discussion they are summarized under 57 local geographic headings (map, Fig. 1). For each local assemblage the following data have been given so far as possi- ble: location, previous references to mollusks, stratigraphic unit and most recent geologic maps, number of species of mollusks, mention of other fossils from the same locality or formation, age, institution where fossils are preserved, and most recent topographic maps. The detail of treatment varies widely, according to available information, progress of knowledge since previous liter- ature and the usefulness of new information. Lists of species are included usually only if the fauna is revised or first recorded in this paper, but the references to previous work are intended to be complete. The Blancan faunas from the Great Plains region (Nebraska, Kansas, Okla- homa, Texas), and from Arizona, are generally similar and include mainly widespread living species.

Its populations are very scattered and poor in individuals. This picture was taken in the Forêt de Muracciole in Central Corsica, an occurrence which was known since the end of the 19th century, but was completely destroyed by a heavy man-made forest fire in 2000.

  • Bad Taxonomy Can Kill : Molecular Reevaluation of Unio Mancus Lamarck, 1819 \(Bivalvia : Unionidae\) and Its Accepted Subspecies
Knowledge and Management of Aquatic Ecosystems (2012) 405, 08 http://www.kmae-journal.org c ONEMA, 2012 DOI: 10.1051/kmae/2012014 Bad taxonomy can kill: molecular reevaluation of Unio mancus Lamarck, 1819 (Bivalvia: Unionidae) and its accepted subspecies V. P rie (1,2),, N. Puillandre(1), P. Bouchet(1) Received October 22, 2011 Revised April 27, 2012 Accepted May 11, 2012 ABSTRACT Key-words: The conservation status of European unionid species rests on the scien- COI gene, tific knowledge of the 1980s, before the current revival of taxonomic reap- conservation praisals based on molecular characters. The taxonomic status of Unio genetics, mancus Lamarck, 1819, superficially similar to Unio pictorum (Linnaeus, freshwater 1758) and often synonymized with it, is re-evaluated based on a random mussel, sample of major French drainages and a systematic sample of histori- molecular cal type localities. We confirm the validity of U. mancus as a distinct systematics, species occurring in France and Spain, where it is structured into three species geographical units here ranked as subspecies: U. m. mancus [Atlantic delimitation drainages, eastern Pyrenees, Spanish Mediterranean drainages], U. m. turtonii Payraudeau, 1826 [coastal drainages East of the Rhône and Cor- sica] and U. m. requienii Michaud, 1831 [Seine, Saône-Rhône, and coastal drainages West of the Rhône]. Many populations of Unio mancus have been extirpated during the 20th century and the remaining populations continue to be under pressure; U. mancus satisfies the criteria to be listed as “Endangered” in the IUCN Red List.
