Expert's Views on the Dilemmas of African Writers
EXPERTS’ VIEWS ON THE DILEMMAS OF AFRICAN WRITERS: CONTRIBUTIONS, CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS By Sarah Kaddu Abstract African writers have faced the “dilemma syndrome” in the execution of their mission. They have faced not only “bed of roses” but also “the bed of thorns”. On one hand, African writers such as Chinua Achebe have made a fortune from royalties from his African Writers’ Series (AWS) and others such as Wole Soyinka, Ben Okri and Naruddin Farah have depended on prestigious book prizes. On the other hand, some African writers have also, according to Larson (2001), faced various challenges: running bankrupt, political and social persecution, business sabotage, loss of life or escaping catastrophe by “hair breadth”. Nevertheless, the African writers have persisted with either success or agony. Against this backdrop, this paper examines the experts’ views on the contributions of African writers to the extending of national and international frontiers in publishing as well as the attendant handicaps before proposing strategies for overcoming the challenges encountered. The specific objectives are to establish some of the works published by the African writers; determine the contribution of the works published by African writers to in terms of political, economic, and cultural illumination; examine the challenges encountered in the publishing process of the African writers’ works; and, predict trends in the future of the African writers’ series. The study findings illuminate on the contributions to political, social, gender, cultural re-awakening and documentation, poetry and literature, growth of the book trade and publishing industry/employment in addition to major challenges encountered. The study entailed extensive analysis of literature, interviews with experts on African writings from the Uganda Christian University and Makerere University, and African Writers Trust; focus group discussions with publishers, and a few selected African writers, and a review of the selected pioneering publications of African writers. -

African Studies Quarterly | Volume 17, Issue 4|February 2018 BOOK REVIEWS Semahagn Gashu Abebe. 2014. The Last Post-Cold War Socialist Federation: Ethnicity, Ideology and Democracy in Ethiopia. London: Routledge. 298 pp. Ethiopia’s ethnic federalism is under stress more than any time since its introduction in 1995. Waves of protest movements in Oromia and Amhara Regional states, in particular, have not given ethnic federalism an easy ride since 2015. Hence, Semahagn Gashu Abebe’s The Last Post- Cold War Socialist Federation is a significant contribution in understanding the sociology of Ethiopian federalism, the political context within which it came into being and is operating, and sheds light on why some ethnic groups are protesting. Abebe’s underlying objective is to explain how the configuration of a Socialist federation in the restructuring of the Ethiopian state makes the transition to and consolidation of democratization and respect for human rights difficult. Organizing the book in eight chapters, Abebe makes a compelling case on the disjuncture between constitutional design and practice in the operation of federalism in Ethiopia. His main hypothesis is that the ideological and political tenets of the TPLF/EPRDF, the ruling coalition since 1991, are more important than the formal constitutional rules in the operation of the federal system. Precisely because of this, he contends that there are two parallel constitutional systems in Ethiopia. In order to test this hypothesis, Abebe explores and examines in detail the scholarship on federal theory and comparative federalism in the first and second chapters. After examining the origin, essential components, basic features, and operation of democratic multi- cultural federations, Abebe could not find comparative relevance for the Ethiopian federal experiment in these systems. -

Revista de Traducción e Interpretación Núm. 6 - Año 2004 Afterword to Preface to Witchcraft Craig MacKENZIE Rand Afrikaans University, Johannesburgo Bessie Head wrote this short autobiographical piece as a preface to her story about witchcraft in Serowe, Botswana, the town that she made her home after leaving South Africa for political reasons on a one-way exit permit in 1964. The story and its preface appeared in the American magazine Ms. in 1975, two years before “Witchcraft” was gathered into Head’s collection of Botswana village tales, The Collector of Treasures. “I am most unhappy in unholy places,” she notes, before observing that “Southern Africa may be the unholiest place on earth.” Much of the piece is devoted to her bitter remarks about racist practices in South Africa: the white man, she says, “took even the air away from us.” What she values about Botswana, in contrast, is its strong sense of historical continuity –of African values, roots, and beliefs. It is significant, however, that she implicitly includes Botswana in her judgement that “Southern Africa may be the unholiest place on earth”, because her stay in that country was not an easy one. Her observation that the government of the newly independent Botswana had “an extremely hostile policy toward South African refugees” is a halftruth, at best. In 1966 the fledgling state had to find a way of living alongside its more powerful and increasingly coercive and belligerent neighbour. Pace Head, Botswana provided a haven for South African political refugees for over two decades, and, by a process of diplomacy and tact, managed to keep its aggressive neighbour at bay before emerging in the post-apartheid era as one of Africa’s most stable and prosperous nations. -

It explains the lifestyle of the traditional Fulani herdsmen of Education, Owerri culture. This paper highlights some aspects of nomadic Fulani culture, identity and itinerant and migration nature. The paper examines the aridity of the Sahel and E-mail: [email protected] northern regions, advanc ing desertification and excessive weather conditions which Mob.: 08137708411 has influenced the migratory movement of the herdsmen struggle, rivalries, challenges and conflicts, occupation, religion and culture .The migration bid of the herdsmen has implications on varietie s of language spoken in Nigeria and most especially English language. The paper also shows the effects of migration on language expansion and socio -economic life of the people. The paper is focused specifically on Burning Grass as well as application of cu rrent environmental factors for the evaluation of the primary data of the study. Chinua Achebe — It Is the Storyteller Who Makes Us See What We Are
caryl phillips Chinua Achebe — It is the Storyteller who makes us see what we are ’d like to say a few things about Chinua Achebe, which hope- Ifully resonate somewhat with our title — “It is the Storyteller who makes us see what we are.” I’ve been thinking about this title and have come to the conclusion that in the case of Chinua Achebe he was also a Storyteller who made us see who we are, or at least he certainly did in my case. I make the distinction between “what” and “who” as a way of suggesting that a personal encounter with him is likely to engender a transformation that is at least as profound as one we might receive by reading the remarkable body of his work. He was such an extraordinarily charismatic man, and having had the privilege of knowing him a little I would like to speak about both “what we are” because of his example, and more specifically “who we are” — or “who I am” — because of a personal encounter. First, Chinua Achebe is a storyteller whose very existence made it possible for a whole generation of writers to imagine that it might be possible for them to begin to think of themselves as writers. From 1958 onwards, his face was there on book jackets, in the newspaper columns, as part of an ongoing global literary conversation, and he established a presence at a very young age for a writer. As we know, Things Fall Apart quickly became a worldwide publishing sensation and not too long after- wards there was a canonical intervention; syllabi and university courses had to be — sometimes reluctantly — cantilevered into new shapes and groupings to include Achebe and his work, and the work of others like him. -

Chinua Achebe was one of the founding editors of the African Writers' Series which had been established to promote black African literature. The novel was also accepted for publication by Longman UK who also failed to publish following to a policy decision not to publish Nigerian literature due to a lack of market. -
