ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: PATTERNS IN DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTION OF BENTHIC MOLLUSCS ALONG A DEPTH GRADIENT IN THE BAHAMAS Michael Joseph Dowgiallo, Doctor of Philosophy, 2004 Dissertation directed by: Professor Marjorie L. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range. -

La distinción taxonómica es una medida de diversidad que presenta una serie de ventajas que dan connotación relevante a la ecología teórica y aplicada. La utilidad de este tipo de medida como otro método para evaluar la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas marinos bentónicos de fondos blandos del Golfo de Batabanó (Cuba) se comprobó mediante el uso de los índices de distinción taxonómica promedio (Delta+) y la variación en la distinción taxonómica (Lambda+) de las comunidades de moluscos. Para este propósito, se utilizaron los inventarios de especies de moluscos bentónicos de fondos blandos obtenidos en el periodo 1981-1985 y en los años 2004 y 2007. Ambos listados de especies fueron analizados y comparados a escala espacial y temporal. La composición taxonómica entre el periodo y años estudiados se conformó de 3 clases, 20 órdenes, 60 familias, 137 géneros y 182 especies, observándose, excepto en el nivel de clase, una disminución no significativa de esta composición en 2004 y 2007. A escala espacial se detectó una disminución significativa en la riqueza taxonómica en el 2004. No se detectaron diferencias significativas en Delta+ y Lambda+ a escala temporal, pero si a escala espacial, hecho que se puede atribuir al efecto combinado del incremento de las actividades antropogénicas en la región con los efectos inducidos por los huracanes. -

4. THE ZONATION OF ROCKY LITTORAL AREAS AROUND LITTLE CAYMAN G.W. Potts Abstract The distribution of the rocky littoral fauna at sites representing different degrees of exposure were examined around Little Cayman, It was found that the molluscan species composition, species morphology and vertical distribution was affected by the exposure of a particular site. Introduction During July and Augusc 1975 the Royal Society and Cayman Island Government supported an expedition to Little Cayman where aspects of the ecology of the island were studied. The Cayman Islands (between 1g015'N and 19O45'N latitude and 7g044' and 81°27'W longitude) are composed of three limestone islands which are formed by the projecting peaks of a range of submarine mountains that form the Cayman Ridge to the north west of Jamaica. According to Matley (1926) the central part of each island is comprised of an old "Bluff Limestone" while the periphery is made up of a mixture of coral sand, marl, and elevated limestone reef which has been weachered to form what is called the "Ironshore formation" (Doran i954, Idyll, 19663. The limestone shore is extensively eroded by the action of rain, the sea, and also the grazing action of some littoral molluscs and the abrasive action of the shells or spines of some species of mollusc and echinoderm, as described by Ginsburg (1953) for the Florida Keys region. It was this rock that was examined in the present work on littoral zonation. The Cayman Islands are particularly interesting because they form a discrete island unit lying in deep water midway between Jamaica, Cuba and the northern coast of South America and yet there have been few studies specifically relating to the littoral region to these islands. -

Here, we conducted a survey of two invasive freshwater snail species (Melanoides tuberculata and Tarebia granifera) in Tobago and assessed the effects on shell use by native marine hermit crab populations (Clibanarius tricolor and C. vittatus). Abundant in freshwater, numbers of empty shells at the mouth of a river in Charlotteville (Northeast Tobago) increased from 75 to 800 m-2 after heavy rains in the wet-season of June 2012. -

RESUMEN Antecedentes: Los gasterópodos y bivalvos marinos son algunos de los grupos de invertebrados más diver- sos en la naturaleza, pero en México se requiere de un mejor conocimiento de su composición taxonómica. Aunque existen importantes estudios sobre los moluscos del Caribe mexicano algunas zonas como la isla de Cozumel han sido poco estudiadas. Objetivo: Difundir nuevos registros de gasterópodos y bivalvos marinos de la isla de Cozumel. Métodos: Los ejemplares se recolectaron principalmente a partir de transectos en sustratos arenosos y revisión de superficies rocosas.Resultados: De un total de 51 especies de gasterópo- dos pertenecientes a 39 géneros y 23 familias, y 11 especies de bivalvos pertenecientes a 10 géneros y nue- ve familias, se registraron nueve especies como nuevos registros, seis de gasterópodos y tres de bivalvos, lo que incrementa el conocimiento de la malacofauna marina de la región. Surveys conducted used the line and point intercept and quadrat techniques to gather data. If unidentified and incompletely identified specimens are not included, this study found 257 species belonging to 134 families, 23 classes, and 11 phyla. Most species belonged to Mollusca (75 species), Chordata (57), Cnidaria (43) and Arthropoda (33). Despite their proximity to each other, only 42 species were common to both reefs. Of the other species, most (178) were found at Salybia Reef. Only members of Phylum Porifera showed a greater species richness at Grande L’Anse Reef than Salybia Reef, with five and two species, respectively. This is the first complete marine biodiversity survey for the most north-eastern part of Trinidad, which includes the only fringing coral reef in Trinidad.
