RESUMEN Antecedentes: Los gasterópodos y bivalvos marinos son algunos de los grupos de invertebrados más diver- sos en la naturaleza, pero en México se requiere de un mejor conocimiento de su composición taxonómica. Aunque existen importantes estudios sobre los moluscos del Caribe mexicano algunas zonas como la isla de Cozumel han sido poco estudiadas. Objetivo: Difundir nuevos registros de gasterópodos y bivalvos marinos de la isla de Cozumel. Métodos: Los ejemplares se recolectaron principalmente a partir de transectos en sustratos arenosos y revisión de superficies rocosas.Resultados: De un total de 51 especies de gasterópo- dos pertenecientes a 39 géneros y 23 familias, y 11 especies de bivalvos pertenecientes a 10 géneros y nue- ve familias, se registraron nueve especies como nuevos registros, seis de gasterópodos y tres de bivalvos, lo que incrementa el conocimiento de la malacofauna marina de la región. Results: Out of a total of Correa 51 species of gastropods belonging to 39 genera and 23 families, and 11 species of bivalves belonging to 10 genera and nine families, nine species were registered as new records, six of gastropods and three of bivalves, which increases knowledge of the marine malacofauna of the region. The new records represent 11.76% and 27.27, respectively, of the total fauna of gastropods and marine bivalves known on the coasts of the island of Cozumel. The main malacogeographic affinity of the new records is the Caribbean.Conclusions: The study area has a 87.93% of the known marine gastropods for the state of Quintana Roo. The total marine bivalve species in the study area constitute 13.92% of the fauna of this mollusk class for the state. Although the main malaco- geographic affinity of the new marine mollusk records is the Caribbean, the study area belongs to a transition zone with the Carolinean province. None of the new records is endemic. All the gastropod and bivalve species indicated as new records can be found in at least four malacological subprovinces. The “spire” is almost invisible, slightly skewed to the right posterior end of the shell. Shell height is highly variable. Inside the body whorl is a characteristic calcareous shell-plate (septum) behind which the visceral mass is protected.

    Impact of the the COVID-19 pandemic on a queen conch (Aliger gigas) fishery in The Bahamas Nicholas D. Higgs Cape Eleuthera Institute, Rock Sound, Eleuthera, Bahamas ABSTRACT The onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in early 2020 led to a dramatic rise in unemployment and fears about food-security throughout the Caribbean region. Subsistence fisheries were one of the few activities permitted during emergency lockdown in The Bahamas, leading many to turn to the sea for food. Detailed monitoring of a small-scale subsistence fishery for queen conch was undertaken during the implementation of coronavirus emergency control measures over a period of twelve weeks. Weekly landings data showed a surge in fishing during the first three weeks where landings were 3.4 times higher than subsequent weeks. Overall 90% of the catch was below the minimum legal-size threshold and individual yield declined by 22% during the lockdown period. This study highlights the role of small-scale fisheries as a `natural insurance' against socio-economic shocks and a source of resilience for small island communities at times of crisis. It also underscores the risks to food security and long- term sustainability of fishery stocks posed by overexploitation of natural resources. Reaka-Kudla Department of Biology, UMCP Species richness and abundance of benthic bivalve and gastropod molluscs was determined over a depth gradient of 5 - 244 m at Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas by deploying replicate benthic collectors at five sites at 5 m, 14 m, 46 m, 153 m, and 244 m for six months beginning in December 1993. A total of 773 individual molluscs comprising at least 72 taxa were retrieved from the collectors. Analysis of the molluscan fauna that colonized the collectors showed overwhelmingly higher abundance and diversity at the 5 m, 14 m, and 46 m sites as compared to the deeper sites at 153 m and 244 m. Irradiance, temperature, and habitat heterogeneity all declined with depth, coincident with declines in the abundance and diversity of the molluscs. Herbivorous modes of feeding predominated (52%) and carnivorous modes of feeding were common (44%) over the range of depths studied at Lee Stocking Island, but mode of feeding did not change significantly over depth. One bivalve and one gastropod species showed a significant decline in body size with increasing depth. Analysis of data for 960 species of gastropod molluscs from the Western Atlantic Gastropod Database of the Academy of Natural Sciences (ANS) that have ranges including the Bahamas showed a positive correlation between body size of species of gastropods and their geographic ranges. There was also a positive correlation between depth range and the size of the geographic range.

It was the intent of this investigation to collect information on the composition, distribution, and biology of the epifaunal invertebrate components of two bays of Kodiak Island.
