A Visitor from Patagonia As part of the Project by the British Council to promote and develop the Welsh language in the province of Chubut in Patagonia, teachers from Argentina come to Wales annually in January to observe in schools relevant to their work.

This year three teachers spent a month in Wales. For the first fortnight they were all in Cardiff - Patricia Ramos was observing Welsh for Adults lessons at Cardiff University, before coming to Penweddig.

Patricia comes from Tir Halen in the upper Camwy Valley in the Chubut Province of Argentina. Today it is known as 28 de Julio - the date the ‘Mimosa’ landed, even though Tir Halen is still the Welsh name.

Welsh was the language of Patricia’s home - her mother and grandmother spoke it and it was lovely to hear her polished Welsh - it is often difficult to remember that not every native Patagonian understands English because Spanish is the language of Argentina.

In the small village of Tir Halen is a new centre that incorporates a school, library, and a small museum that interprets the history of the agricultural area. Patricia used to work at the museum but has now returned to teaching Geography, and teaches at school 781 in Dolavon and at school 773 in Tir Halen. She continues to be called to the museum, however, when visitors from Wales come to see the artefacts.

Although she has been in Wales before - on a Welsh course in Lampeter – she researched her family history before coming this time. She understands that there is a family connection to and with the help of a local historian she met a relative and saw houses where her ancestors lived.
