New Navy Chief to Take Over in March

Rear Admiral (RADM) Ng Chee Peng will take over from Rear Admiral (RADM) Chew Men Leong as Chief of Navy on 29 March 2011, as part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Armed Forces (SAF).

RADM Ng Chee Peng, 41, who is currently Chief of Staff - Joint Staff, joined the SAF in Dec 1988 and was awarded the President's and SAF Overseas Scholarship in 1989. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours First Class) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, UK; as well as a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard University, USA. His previous appointments in the SAF include Commanding Officer of RSS Victory; Commanding Officer of the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) Missile

Corvette Squadron; Commander of RSN's First Flotilla; Director (Policy) in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF); RSN Fleet Commander and Chief of Staff - Naval Staff.

RADM Chew Men Leong, 44, began his military career in 1985 and has served the SAF with distinction. Through the course of his career, RADM Chew has held the appointments of Commanding Officer of RSS Vigour; Commanding Officer of the RSN's Missile Corvette Squadron; Head Joint Plans & Transformation Department; Commander of RSN's First Flotilla; RSN's Fleet Commander; Head Naval Operations Department and Chief of Staff - Naval Staff. As Chief of Navy since 31 Aug 2007, RADM Chew was instrumental in operationalising key aspects of the RSN's 3rd Generation transformation. These included the formation of the Maritime Security Task Force and the establishment of the Information Fusion Centre at the Changi Command and Control Centre to enhance regional maritime information sharing and collaboration with other navies and maritime agencies. RADM Chew also oversaw the development of RSN's capabilities to enhance her ability to protect Singapore's sea lines of communication which included the successful integration of the S- 70B Seahawk naval helicopters with the RSN's Formidable-class frigates and the development of the Archer-class submarines. Under RADM Chew's command, the RSN made significant contributions to the counter-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, deploying two landing ships tank and a Command team to the multinational Combined Task Force 151. RADM Chew will be returning to the Administrative Service.
