    US Chief of Naval Operations Receives Prestigious Military Award 13 May 2013 The US Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Jonathan William Greenert inspecting the Guard of Honour at MINDEF. The Chief of Naval Operations of the United States Navy (USN), Admiral (ADM) Jonathan William Greenert, was conferred Singapore's prestigious military award, the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera) [or the Meritorious Service Medal (Military)] by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen at an investiture held at the Ministry of Defence this afternoon. The Meritorious Service Medal (Military) was awarded to ADM Greenert in recognition of his invaluable contributions in enhancing and expanding the excellent ties between the USN and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). Under ADM Greenert's leadership, professional interactions between the two navies have grown significantly in both scope and depth. For example, through the bilateral Co-operation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercises and the multilateral Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, the USN and RSN continue to engage each other in high-end warfare training and missile firings. Both navies also interact regularly through other exercises, ship visits, technology collaboration and cross-attendance of courses, and at multilateral fora such as the Western Pacific Naval Symposium and the ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM)-Plus. Such interactions provide mutual professional benefits and strengthen interoperability and understanding between the two navies. Following the award ceremony, ADM Greenert said, "It is truly an honour to receive this award from the Singapore Ministry of Defence. We have a strong and growing defence relationship with Singapore, as well as an excellent relationship with the Republic of Singapore Navy.

    Change in Chief of Navy 02 Jul 2014 Outgoing Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Ng Chee Peng (left) and Incoming Chief of Navy Read-Admiral Lai Chung Han (right). Rear-Admiral (RADM) Lai Chung Han, currently Deputy Secretary (Policy) at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), will take over from RADM Ng Chee Peng as Chief of Navy on 1 August 2014. This change is part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). Since joining the SAF in 1988, RADM Ng Chee Peng, 44, has served the SAF with distinction. Through the course of his career, RADM Ng has held, amongst others, the appointments of Commanding Officer of RSS Victory; Commanding Officer of 188 Squadron; Commander of 1st Flotilla; Director (Policy); Fleet Commander; Chief of Staff-Naval Staff; and Chief of Staff-Joint Staff. RADM Ng has held the post of Chief of Navy since 29 Mar 2011. As Chief of Navy, RADM Ng has maintained the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) high state of operational readiness by leading it through the successful conduct of local and overseas maritime operations. He laid the foundations for the RSN's future capabilities byoperationalisingnew platforms such as the ARCHER- class submarines and reorganizing the RSN's operational, training and safety systems. He also introduced various initiatives to better engage RSN servicemen and to further strengthen their commitment to defence. He also initiated efforts by the RSN, e.g. Navy@VIVO, to reach out to the public and the wider community. Under RADM Ng's leadership, the RSN has made valuable contributions to international counter-piracy efforts and played a key role through its command of Combined Task Force 151 in the Gulf of Aden.

    New Navy Chief to Take Over in March 22 Feb 2011 Rear Admiral (RADM) Ng Chee Peng will take over from Rear Admiral (RADM) Chew Men Leong as Chief of Navy on 29 March 2011, as part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). RADM Ng Chee Peng, 41, who is currently Chief of Staff - Joint Staff, joined the SAF in Dec 1988 and was awarded the President's and SAF Overseas Scholarship in 1989. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours First Class) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from the University of Oxford, UK; as well as a Master of Public Administration from the Harvard University, USA. His previous appointments in the SAF include Commanding Officer of RSS Victory; Commanding Officer of the Republic of Singapore Navy's (RSN) Missile 1 Corvette Squadron; Commander of RSN's First Flotilla; Director (Policy) in the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF); RSN Fleet Commander and Chief of Staff - Naval Staff. RADM Chew Men Leong, 44, began his military career in 1985 and has served the SAF with distinction.     Indonesian Air Force and Navy Chiefs in Singapore for Introductory Visits 05 Mar 2013 ADM Marsetio inspecting a Guard of Honour at MINDEF. The Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy, Admiral (ADM) Marsetio, and the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Air Force, Air Chief Marshal (ACM) Ida Bagus Putu Dunia, are in Singapore for their introductory visits. ADM Marsetio and ACM Putu called on Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), on 4 and 5 Mar 2013 respectively. While at MINDEF, ADM Marsetio and ACM Putu also called on their respective counterparts, Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral (RADM) Ng Chee Peng and Chief of Air Force Major-General (MG) Ng Chee Meng. During the bilateral meetings, both sides reaffirmed the close professional cooperation between both defence forces as well as reiterated their mutual commitment to continue to strengthen defence ties. ADM Marsetio, who is in Singapore from 3 to 5 Mar 2013, also visited the Naval Diving Unit at Sembawang Camp yesterday morning. ACM Putu, who is in Singapore from 4 to 6 Mar 2013, will also be visiting 145 Squadron at Changi Air Base (East) this afternoon. The introductory visits by ADM Marsetio and ACM Putu, the first for both since assuming their appointments in Dec 2012, underscore the strong and long-standing defence relationship between Singapore and Indonesia. The Republic of Singapore Navy and the Indonesian Navy have cooperated in the Indonesia-Singapore Coordinated Patrol to deter sea robberies since 1992 and have been exercising together since 1974 under the ambit of Exercise Eagle, while the Republic of Singapore Air Force and the Indonesian Air Force have been exercising together since 1980 under Exercise Elang Indopura.

  • Navy Welcomes New Chief
    Navy Welcomes New Chief 01 Aug 2014 Outgoing Chief of Navy, RADM Ng Chee Peng (left), handing over the command symbol to the incoming Chief of Navy, RADM Lai Chung Han (right). The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) welcomed Rear-Admiral (RADM) Lai Chung Han as its new Chief of Navy at a Change of Command Parade held at Changi Naval Base today. During the parade, RADM Lai took over the Navy's symbol of command from the outgoing Chief of Navy, RADM Ng Chee Peng. This change is part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).At the parade, RADM Ng reviewed a Guard-of-Honour contingent and six supporting contingents formed by the various RSN's formations, with a display of RSN ships and static displays in the background. RADM Ng joined the SAF in 1988 and was awarded the President's Scholarship and SAF Overseas Scholarship in 1989. He has held several senior command and staff appointments in Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) and the SAF, including Chief of Staff - Joint Staff; Chief of Staff - Naval Staff; RSN Fleet Commander; Director (Policy) in MINDEF; Commander of RSN's First Flotilla; Commanding Officer (CO) of the RSN's Missile Corvette Squadron and CO of RSS Victory. The parade was witnessed by the Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Ng Chee Meng and attended by senior SAF officers and servicemen from the Navy.     463 SAF Officers Promoted 28 Jun 2007 Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean presenting the certificate of promotion to Chief of Defence Force MG Desmond Kuek. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) promoted 463 officers from the Army, Navy and Air Force to the next higher rank. The officers promoted include regulars and Operationally Ready National Servicemen (NSmen). Minister for Defence, Mr Teo Chee Hean presented certificates of 1 promotion to officers promoted into the ranks of Colonel (COL) and above at the annual SAF Officers' Promotion Ceremony held this evening. The promotions take effect from 1 Jul 07. Heading the list of officers promoted is the Chief of Defence Force, Major-General (MG) Desmond Kuek Bak Chye, who was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-General (LG). The Chief of Army, Brigadier-General (BG) Neo Kian Hong, and Chief of Air Force, Brigadier-General (BG) Ng Chee Khern were promoted to the rank of Major-General (MG). The SAF requires officers to have consistently demonstrated a high level of competence, performance and potential before they are promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. This year, seven Colonels (COL) were promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General (BG) /Rear Admiral (One Star) (RADM). The seven officers are COL Chan Chun Sing, COL Hoo Cher Mou, COL Lim Chern Tjunn Philip, COL Ng Chee Peng, COL Tan Chuan-Jin, COL Tay Kian Seng and COL(Dr) Wong Chee Meng John. The Chief of Defence Force also presented certificates of promotion to officers who were promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel (LTC).

Theories and empirical studies drawn from psychology, sociology, and the management sciences served as sensitizing concepts which guided data collection. Twenty-eight retired military elites drawn from vocations across the tri-service SAF shared their ‘lived experiences’ during semi-structured interviews. There were primary and secondary motivations to join the SAF. The former included prestigious scholarships, that the SAF was the best career option available, military medicine was an atypical path for doctors, cutting-edge technology and technical competency, and genuine interests in the armed forces. The latter categories comprised salary, flying, the sea, ‘escaping’ conscription in the army, and familial roles in the choice of a military career.
