An event aimed at nurturing junior golfers

or the second consecutive year, the 11th Tiger Cubs FChampionship 2013 held on 15, 16 and 22 July attracted an unprecedented 329 junior golfers from 59 schools.

The 3-day competition held at NSRCC’s Executive Par- 3 course was organised by Naval Base Primary school and supported by the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Our future national players

Over 60 members who registered their children for the competition were beaming with delight as they watched their children receive prizes.

Among them were Mr Ng Aik Leong and his son Wei Jun and Mr Joseph Chia and his son Neal.

Mr Ng said the young golfers demonstrated enthusiasm and competitiveness in the event and he was impressed with his son, Wei Jun’s positive attitude and discipline.

“I am pleased with Wei Jun. He has played with consistency for the two days and has improved his game and become more mature.”

Joseph complimented the perfect course condition and felt that his Primary 3 son performed well among the older boys in spite of his young age.

“This is an exciting event that can reinforce juniors’ skills and also enable them to make new friends”.

“Can’t anything be done to eliminate insects on the golf courses?” No, but measures are in place to control them in NSRCC.

One common insect known as the common Ant Alate (Flying Alate) - winged ant is found especially after rain.

An uncommon insect is the Sandfly (Leptoconop) recently sighted during the months of June, July and August. It is a major pest in coastal areas and can inflict painful bites that may cause itch and bleeding wounds.

Pest Control The club is monitoring the situation and is working hand-in-hand with pest controller Rentokil to conduct surveillance and fumigation from time-to-time at the affected areas.

Golfers will find the Flying Insect Control (FIC) Traps at our three halfway houses in Changi that emit fluorescent Ultra-violet lights drawing insects and trapping them on adhesive film. Protection and Prevention Golfers especially those with sensitive skin or allergies are advised to wear protective gear to cover exposed skin. For added protection, golfers can wear long pants, long sleeved tops, bring a towel to cover the back of the neck and put on sunscreen on the face and spray insect repellent. Do you have an insect remedy tip or experience to share? Write in to us at [email protected]

Trouble Shots – Time to Step Up to the Plate

Pulling off trouble shots requires creativity, imagination and knowledge of what is possible. You have to be fearless, you have to be committed. Many golfers shy away from trouble shots as the shots present too much of a risk. What if I don’t pull it off? A lot of times because of their own cash on the line, they will never find out whether they have the skill to pull off the recovery shot simply because they were reluctant to try.

Whilst the list is long, let’s take a look at one trouble shot that is common.

Plugged ball in bunker (up the face)

Players always freak out when they see this lie. It is possible (with practice of course) to be able to control your ball to hit it near the hole but let’s just start with getting it out of trouble first.

It’s easy to dive in and go for the miracle recovery before carefully weighing up the situation. I see it too often when players are in trouble - they go from the frying pan into the fire! 1 Here’s how to play a plugged ball that is up against the face, in the bunker.

Stay calm, this is not as difficult as it looks. Firstly, make sure you secure your feet in the sand with more emphasis on the back foot being secure. You cannot afford to slip. Set up with a slightly open club face (normal bunker shots will be more) but lean the shaft forward (Photo 1) so the leading edge becomes the first thing that will come in contact with the sand in your swing. The key thought is to thump the club into the hill/slope under the ball with controlled acceleration. 2

Backswings are usually only between 8 to 10 o’clock swings (in other words, about half swings for those who are not familiar with the swing time concept) depending on the distance to your target, not wild haymakers (Photo 2).

Downswings need to accelerate into the hill so the volume of sand is deep and your follow-through obviously becomes stifled (Photos 3 and 4), like a stabbing motion. Reminds me of the NIKE symbol, the tick (the follow-through represents the short side of the tick). 3

The ball “magically” pops and lands with hardly any spin and from an upslope lie, will come out reasonably soft. Normal plugged ball lies off flat sand will come out with far more roll. But the main thing here is not to panic. You’ve got to practise this lie before you realise it is not as difficult as it looks and you can even be clever and develop a feel on how the ball will react.

Take the challenge. Try this out and see whether you can add it to your repertoire of shots. Who knows, you may just save yourself some shots out there on the golf course next time. 4 Phil Brew Director Phil Brew Golf Academy onPar resort view 17

Rule 26-1B: What Happens If the Ball lands Golf101 in the Water Hazard?

The player may drop a ball behind the water hazard under penalty of one stroke.

* Yellow stakes or lines are used to define the hazard and hazard margin respectively.

Point at which original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard

The player must keep the point at which the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard directly between the hole and the spot on which the ball is dropped. There is no limit to how far behind the water hazard the ball may be dropped. resort view 18 onPar Growing the “Gotong Royong” Spirit

Say ‘Gotong Royong’!

National Service Day Golf is organised every year in recognition of our National Service men’s contribution towards National Defence.

n the spirit of ‘Gotong Royong’, golfers were armed with sand bottles I and divot repairing tools. With an estimated 15,000 rounds of golf played per year at Changi, this annual exercise of repairing divots and ball marks certainly drives home the message to keep the golf course healthy.

Upon the first siren, buggies were dispatched to the different holes. Train of buggies just before the first siren Despite the scorching sun, golfers were seen repairing divot and ball marks very diligently. The second siren sounded soon after, marking the start of the tournament.

Gracing the dinner and prize presentation was BG Tung Yui Fai, Director of National Service Affairs. We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to all winners and Norman Hoe, who bagged the Overall Champion this year.

We look forward to seeing you next year!
