I In the title of the second quarto (i 598), printed for Wise by Thomas Creede, the words " By William Shake-speare " occupy a new line after " seruants." The fourth, fifth, and sixth quartos also spell the author's name with a hyphen. The third quarto (1602), also printed by Creede, gives it as "Shakespeare," and adds, in a line above, the words " Newly augmented followed by a comma, which appear in the titles of the re- maining quartos. -

Abbey - a community of monks or nuns, ruled by an abbot or abbess. Usually founded by a monastic order. Abbeys oftne owe some form of feudal obligation to a lord or higher organization. They are normally self-contained. Abjuration - renunciation, under oath, of heresy to the Christian faith, made by a Christian wishing to be reconciled with the Church. Accidie - term used in ascetical literature for spiritual sloth, boredom, and discouragement. Acolyte - a clerk in minor orders whose particular duty was the service of the altar. Advocate - lay protector and legal representative of a monastery. Advowson - the right of nominating or presenting a clergyman to a vacant living. Agistment - a Church rate, or tithe, charged on pasture land. Aisle - lateral division of the nave or chancel of a church. Alb - a full-length white linen garment, with sleeves and girdle, worn by the celebrant at mass under a chasuble. Almoner - officer of a monastery entrusted with dispensing alms to the poor and sick. Almonry - place from which alms were dispensed to the poor. Almuce - large cape, often with attached hood, of cloth turned down over the shoulders and lined with fur. Doctors of Divinity and canons wore it lined with gray fur. Cape was edged with little Ambulatory - aisle leading round an apse, usually encircling the choir of a church. Amice - a square of white linen, folded diagonally, worn by the celebrant priest, on the head or about the neck and shoulders. Anathema - condemnation of heretics, similar to major excommunication. It inflicts the penalty of complete exclusion from Christian society. -

In presenting the remarkable history of this enormous bubble, which in 1720 burst in the British metropolis, overwhelming thousands with the gloom of utter bankruptcy, and crushing their fondest hopes and brightest prospects in the relentless grasp of sudden poverty, we do not claim for it the slightest affinity to the causes that have conspired to produce the com mercial and monetary embarrassments, which have existed in this country for the last few years. Nor do we think it bears the least resemblance to that vast chain of individual credit and personal confidence which, through out the United States, have called into existence a large proportion of our national wealth and internal prosperity. We give it because it mirrors forth the events of an era, more remarkable for the production of imaginary and spectral schemes, by designing and visionary men, than were ever breathed into life and form by the wildest speculations of any other age or period of the world. The universal mania, which then raged, not in England alone, but in France also, conjuring up a thousand dreamy and unsubstantial shapes, which, after assuming the name of some delusive stock, and absorbing the capital and entire fortunes of the credulous multitude, vanished in a single night, and expired with the hopes of its miserable votaries, while the vil- lanous and unprincipled inventors amassed from their fraudulent schemes the wealth of princes, furnishes no lesson which is in the slightest degree -

It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. Arms and the (tax-)man: The use and taxation of armorial bearings in Britain, 1798–1944. Philip Daniel Allfrey BA, BSc, MSc(Hons), DPhil. Dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of MLitt in Family and Local History at the University of Dundee. October 2016 Abstract From 1798 to 1944 the display of coats of arms in Great Britain was taxed. Since there were major changes to the role of heraldry in society in the same period, it is surprising that the records of the tax have gone unstudied. This dissertation evaluates whether the records of the tax can say something useful about heraldry in this period. The surviving records include information about individual taxpayers, statistics at national and local levels, and administrative papers. To properly interpret these records, it was necessary to develop a detailed understanding of the workings of the tax; the last history of the tax was published in 1885 and did not discuss in detail how the tax was collected. A preliminary analysis of the records of the armorial bearings tax leads to five conclusions: the financial or social elite were more likely to pay the tax; the people who paid the tax were concentrated in fashionable areas; there were differences between the types of people who paid the tax in rural and urban areas; women and clergy were present in greater numbers than one might expect; and the number of taxpayers grew rapidly in the middle of the nineteenth century, but dropped off after 1914. Medieval scriptural commentaries and spiritual handbooks helped to standardize the interpretation of such figures and to impress them on the memories of preachers (and their congregations). Box 467, Wellington, New Zealand Email: [email protected] Abstract A revised Checklist of 331 species of Fijian ferns and lycophytes is presented here. Six species are presumed to be introduced and 48 (15%) are endemic. The annotated list includes family, genus and species names for all Fijian ferns, and aligns them with names used by Brownlie (1977) in his Pteridophyte Flora of Fiji. Since publication of Brownlie’s work, 29 species have been added to the Fijian fern flora, 79 of the previously recorded taxa now have different generic and/or species names, and c. 40% are placed in different families. Specimens of ferns in the South Pacific Regional Herbarium (SUVA) were examined, and all have been re-identified as far as possible using the updated names. The significance of this work in the context of the wider Pacific region is discussed. Introduction This Checklist of ferns and lycophytes for Fiji updates the names used by Brownlie (1977) in his Pteridophyte Flora of Fiji. There have been significant changes to the taxonomy of ferns since that time, particularly with re-circumscriptions of families and genera (Smith et al. 2006). Subsequent work focused on the fern flora of Fiji includes that of Kramer & Zogg (1988), Parris (1994), Ebihara & Iwatsuki (2007), and the National Museum of Nature and Science (2008). Since our initial unpublished report was submitted (Brownsey & Perrie 2008), Japanese pteridologists have published Illustrated Flora of ferns and fern allies of South Pacific Islands (National Museum of Nature and Science 2008). -

Rachel Fulton Brown The University of Chicago Great Books of the Middle Ages; and How to Read Them What is a great book? You would think that I, at least, as a member of the faculty at the University of Chicago, would be able to answer this question. We are, after all, famous as the institution where Mortimer J. Adler did his work editing the Great Books of the Western World, the 54-volume set of 443 works by 74 white male authors published to great fanfare in 1952 and hailed by former president and chancellor of the University of Chicago Robert Maynard Hutchins as embodying “the faith of the West.” But contrary to common knowledge, Adler’s list of books had nothing to do with the Core curriculum of the undergraduate College at Chicago.1 Nor, as I hope to convince you, was it especially “great”—particularly if our goal is to understand, preserve, and build on what we now call Western civilization, but which I argue ought more properly to be called by its medieval term: “Christendom.” It is true that Adler had offices on campus on the fifth floor of the Social Sciences building where he and a team of 120 staffers burned through half of the project’s entire budget compiling an index of the 102 Great Ideas that Adler claimed ran through the 443 works the selection committee had chosen to represent the “Great Conversation of the Western World.” But Adler was not a member of the College 1 For the history of the project, see Alex Beam, A Great Idea at the Time: The Rise, Fall, and Curious Afterlife of the Great Books (New York: Public Affairs, 2008). -

DIRECTING RICHARD III ________________________________________________________________ A Thesis Submitted to The Temple University Graduate Board ________________________________________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF FINE ARTS IN DIRECTING ________________________________________________________________ By Brandon McShaffrey May, 2012 ________________________ Douglas Wager Thesis Advisor & Head of Directing Department of Theater ABSTRACT DIRECTOR OF RICHARD III Brandon McShaffrey Mentor: Douglas Wager Richard III is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s longest and most complex plays, with a complicated plot, and a character that is a Machiavellian villain. After a workshop of Act I as an MFA Directing Project, I was granted by Temple University to stage a full production of Richard III as my thesis. Approaching the play proved difficult for me due to my lack of experience with Shakespearean text. However, by analyzing Shakespeare’s text, and approaching the cut with the goal to make the story as clear as possible, I desired to create a production that embodied the idea of “now.” The designed team and I created a world that was a-historic pulling from classic and modern forms providing the necessary landscape for the play to occur. Through a series of seven chapters I explain my process from conception to production. I also evaluate my growth as a director during this artistic achievement.
