She graduated in Chemistry at the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain, 1982), where she also obtained her Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry. In 1993, she continued her Post Doctoral studies for two years at the Institute of Marine Biosciences (National Research Council) in Halifax (Canada) and obtained a fellowship from the Galician and Spanish Ministry of Education as a guest scientist in Health Canada, Ottawa (Canada, 2000). Since 2009, Ana Gago Mart´ınez is the Director of the European Reference Laboratory for Marine Biotoxins. Arjen Gerssen with a Ph.D. Degree in Toxicology/Analytical Chemistry from the Wageningen University (The Netherlands, 2010), Dr Arjen Gerssen is senior scientist and food contaminants program manager at Wageningen Food Safety Research. He graduated in analytical chemistry at the university of applied sciences in Alkmaar, the Netherlands (2001). In 2004, he obtained his Master’s Degree in Analytical Chemistry at the Free University of Amsterdam. After obtaining his PhD degree in 2010, Arjen continued as a research scientist at Wageningen Food Safety Research and participated in various research projects on residues and contaminants in food. Several groups of marine biotoxins, in particular tetrodotoxins, ciguatoxins, and palytoxins, are included among the relevant marine biotoxins that have recently emerged in several coastal areas. A similar situation has been observed in freshwater, where cyanobacterial toxins such as microcystins might end up in unexpected areas such as the estuaries where shellfish are cultivated. Climate change and the increased availability of nutrients have been considered as the key factors in the expansion of all of these toxins into new areas; however, this could also be due to more intense biological invasions, more sensitive analytical methods, or perhaps even an increased scientific interest in these natural contaminations. The incidences of human intoxications due to the consumption of seafood contaminated with these toxins have made their study an important task to accomplish, in order to protect human health. This special issue has a focus on a wide variety of emerging biotoxin classes. One of the most important classes of emerging toxins are ciguatoxins, which until recently were considered endemic to (sub)tropical regions in the Pacific and Indian Ocean as well as the Caribbean Sea, but are nowadays responsible for intoxications in other places worldwide. This is particularly so in Europe, not only through the consumption of imported ciguatoxin contaminated seafood from endemic areas, but also because of their occurrence in particular areas of Macaronesia such as Azores, Madeira Islands (Portugal) and the Canary

    Other Contributions NATURE NOTES Amphibia: Caudata Ambystoma ordinarium. Predation by a Black-necked Gartersnake (Thamnophis cyrtopsis). The Michoacán Stream Salamander (Ambystoma ordinarium) is a facultatively paedomorphic ambystomatid species. Paedomorphic adults and larvae are found in montane streams, while metamorphic adults are terrestrial, remaining near natal streams (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). Streams inhabited by this species are immersed in pine, pine-oak, and fir for- ests in the central part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (Luna-Vega et al., 2007). All known localities where A. ordinarium has been recorded are situated between the vicinity of Lake Patzcuaro in the north-central portion of the state of Michoacan and Tianguistenco in the western part of the state of México (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). This species is considered Endangered by the IUCN (IUCN, 2015), is protected by the government of Mexico, under the category Pr (special protection) (AmphibiaWeb; accessed 1April 2016), and Wilson et al. (2013) scored it at the upper end of the medium vulnerability level. Data available on the life history and biology of A. ordinarium is restricted to the species description (Taylor, 1940), distribution (Shaffer, 1984; Anderson and Worthington, 1971), diet composition (Alvarado-Díaz et al., 2002), phylogeny (Weisrock et al., 2006) and the effect of habitat quality on diet diversity (Ruiz-Martínez et al., 2014). We did not find predation records on this species in the literature, and in this note we present information on a predation attack on an adult neotenic A. ordinarium by a Thamnophis cyrtopsis. Using QuaSSE, we determine if the most probable model of trait-driven diversification in the three most common groups of snakes in North America, the ratsnakes, pitvipers and watersnakes, is similar to the predicted regional BSFD. Results BSFD of snakes at the community, biome, regional and clade scales show symmetric distributions of body size. These patterns may simply be generated from random statistical subsampling. Speciation rates are not highest at or near the modal body size and simulations show that linear trait-driven models can still yield highly symmetric distributions of body size. Main conclusions In this study region, processes such as competition due to size do not alter BSFD from one scale to the other.

The males are a little longer than the females, averaging of 2-2.10 m and 1.9-2.05 m respectively (Solórzano, 2004). The species lives along the Caribbean versant of Nicaragua to western and central Panama (Campbell & Lamar, 2004), and in Costa Rica is found in tropical wet and subtropical rainforest on the Caribbean versant (Corrales et al., 2014) where the rainfall is very high (3500-6000 mm annual range). Although it can be found at altitudes of 100-700 m its preferences are thought to be 200- 400 m (Ripa, 2002). Lachesis spp. are the only pit vipers on the American continent that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young (Campbell & Lamar, 2004; Solórzano, 2004). The eggs are deposited in subterranean cavities and the shelters of Figure 1.

    The following is a work in progress and is intended to be a printable quick reference for the venomous snakes of the world. There are a few areas in which common names are needed and various disputes occur due to the nature of such a list, and it will of course be continually changing and updated. And nearly all species have many common names, but tried it simple and hopefully one for each will suffice. I also did not include snakes such as Heterodon ( Hognoses), mostly because I have to draw the line somewhere. Disclaimer: I am not a taxonomist, that being said, I did my best to try and put together an accurate list using every available resource. However, it must be made very clear that a list of this nature will always have disputes within, and THIS particular list is meant to reflect common usage instead of pioneering the field. I put this together at the request of several individuals new to the venomous endeavor, and after seeing some very blatant mislabels in the classifieds…I do hope it will be of some use, it prints out beautifully and I keep my personal copy in a three ring binder for quick access…I honestly thought I knew more than I did…LOL… to my surprise, I learned a lot while compiling this list and I hope you will as well when you use it…I also would like to thank the following people for their suggestions and much needed help: Dr.Wolfgang Wuster , Mark Oshea, and Dr. Brian Greg Fry.

SUPPORTING MATERIALS AND METHODS 1.1 Assumptions about the Isthmus of Panama Hundreds of researchers have assumed a closure date for the Isthmus of Panama between 3.5 and 3.0 Ma over the last two decades. The papers most cited for this geological date are essentially from two research groups, Coates (1-5) and Haug (6, 7). Taken together, these papers alone have been cited 2092 times, according to Google Scholar (accessed March 4, 2015). 1.2 Molecular data compilation and analyses We used molecular phylogenetic studies that included extant New World species published or in press until May 2013 in 29 journals (Tables S8 and S9). We identified 424 divergence time estimates in 169 phylogenies that represented unambiguous instances of dispersal across the Isthmus of Panama or vicariance events of marine taxa across the Caribbean and Pacific oceans. Our proxy for dispersal time, mean crown ages S-1 and the confidence intervals around them, were gleaned from each phylogeny. Crown groups are defined as the least inclusive monophyletic group that contains all the extant members of a clade (sensu 8). We adopted the approach of Hoorn et al. (9) for data mining and included studies that were directly or indirectly dated with fossil calibration or known rates of nucleotide substitution and excluded studies with calibrations based on geologic events, such as the closure of the Panama Isthmus. 1.3 Fossil data generation To compile fossil mammal data, searches were conducted in Web of Knowledge (http://wokinfo.com) and Georef (http://www.agiweb.org/georef/).
