    GUY FAWKES NIGHT / SCRIPT th Every year on the 5 of November people across the UK celebrate Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, they enjoy fireworks and bonfire parties, but not many people really know the reason behind the celebration. Its history begins more than 400 years ago. After Queen Elizabeth I took the throne of England in 1558, she made some laws against the Roman Catholics. They were treated unfairly and hoped that the new king, James I, would change the laws, but he didn’t. Instead, he passed even more laws against the Catholics when he became the King of England after the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. At that time, Catholic people in England were discriminated against. For example, Catholics were not allowed an education and had to practice their religion in secret. There were even fines for people who didn’t attend the Protestant church on Sunday or on holy days. Guy Fawkes was one of those people who didn’t feel happy with the ways Catholics were treated at that time. So, in 1605, group of 14 Catholic men led by Robert Catesby, plotted to kill King James and his leaders. They wanted to blow up the House of Parliament in London on the day set for the King James to open the Parliament. The men bought a house next door to the House of Parliament. The house had a cellar which went under the parliament building. They placed 36 barrels of gunpowder under the house and waited for the king to arrive. Guy Fawkes was given a job to keep watch over the barrels of gunpowder and to light the fuse.

And finally, how, in the early years of the 21st century he became the face of the international hacktivist group known as Anonymous. Furthermore, I will be analyzing the historical context in which the character of Guy Fawkes was conceived as well as explaining why he was the main figure who was accounted responsible for the Gunpowder Plot despite the fact that he was not its leader. Moreover, I will analyze why the group Anonymous chose the “Fawkesque” mask from the character from the graphic novel as well as the movie V for Vendetta which was at the same time inspired in the historical character, to become the face of the 21st century hacktivist movement. GUY FAWKES NIGHT Guy Fawkes Night is a bonfire night celebrated in the United Kingdom on November 5 to commemorate the night that would have changed the nation’s history. It commemorates the failure of the Gunpowder Plot against King James I by English Catholics led by Guy Fawkes, Britain’s most infamous rebel, and Robert Catesby. The plot had been to blow up the Parliament building and assassinate the King. A member of the group betrayed them and Guy Fawkes was arrested just when it was time to ignite the gunpowder and execute the mission. From then, every night on November 5, bonfires were set alight to celebrate the safety of the King. However, others do the ritual in commemoration of Fawkes for his brevity of fighting for Catholicism in England. PANCAKE DAY Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2016 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 9th February. INTERESTING FACT - The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439.

This amendment to British law brought to a close one of most controversial and at times violent aspects of religious history in Great Britain. Since the Act of Supremacy in 1534 an unstoppable wave of anti – catholic feeling had spread through England, maintained by anti – Catholic legislation and a strong Protestant establishment. The power and reach of Rome inspired fear and mistrust among Protestants which only created hatred and bigotry. This thesis discusses the discrimination against Roman Catholics in the England between 1534 and 1688. The objectives of this thesis it to show the origins of Anti – Catholicism in both politics and daily life and to discover why it persisted across historical periods namely the 16th and 17th centuries and explore its manifestation in England. The various acts of law and historical events impeded, hindered and harmed Catholics living in England.
