Abstract This study examines cadmium (Cd) contamination in orchard soils and fruit trees in Guangzhou, China, and assesses its potential health risk. Soils and tissues samples of three species of fruit trees were collected from three orchards. The average soil Cd concentration was 1.27, 1.84 and 0.68 mg/kg in orchards I, II, and III, respectively. The carambola (Averrhoa carambola) accumulated exceptionally high concentrations of Cd (7.57, 10.84, 9.01 and 2.15 mg/kg dw in root, twig, leaf and fruit, respectively), being 6.0e24 times and 4.0e10 times the corresponding tissue Cd in the longan (Dimocarpus longan) and wampee (Clausena lansium), respectively. Furthermore, all Cd concentrations (0.04e0.25 mg Cd/kg fw) of the fruits exceeded the tolerance limit of cadmium in foods of PR China (0.03 mg/kg fw). Our results indicate that the carambola tree has high Cd accumulation capacity and might be a Cd accumulator; and its fruit, among the three species of fruits studied, also poses the highest potential health risk to local residents. -

GEG Foundation Promotes Portuguese Language, Culture and Art with IPOR May 25, 2021 – Galaxy Entertainment Group Foundation (“the Foundation”) launched the “GEG Cultural & Academic Fund” early this year to support the Portuguese Institute of the Orient (“IPOR”) in organizing activities to promote Portuguese language and culture in Macau. The scheme aims to deepen the cultural exchanges between Macau and Portuguese-speaking countries, cultivate talents for the related fields, highlight Macau’s unique advantage as the bridge between China and Portuguese- speaking countries, and to better align Macau with the overall development plans of the nation. The “GEG Cultural & Academic Fund” debuted with the launch of a literary and cultural festival, the “‘Alphabets & Friends’ – Feet on Earth and Head in the Air”, which covered various cultural, arts and environmental protection activities that were delivered in the Portuguese language. The festival was successfully concluded earlier, and received strong support and feedback from the participants. The “GEG Cultural & Academic Fund” is anchored with 3 main public goals: to create, curate and promote the exchange, visibility and prestige of international artistic projects by Portuguese artists and cultural agents of the Portuguese-speaking countries; to deepen the relations between artists of the Portuguese-speaking countries and Macau and to bring together the creative and artistic experiences of these countries so as to create an impact on the digital applied arts, leisure activities and creative industries for its residents; and to promote Portuguese as a foreign Language in specialized professional areas such as law, business, health and medicine, journalism and public administration in Portuguese-speaking countries, while offering grant programs to young people in Macau who are specializing in technological and scientific areas in Portugal. -

The role holy scarabs played to ancient Egyptians is legendary, but other religions, too, appreciated insects: the Bible mentions honey 55 times. Insects as ornaments and decoration have been common throughout the ages and nowadays adorn stamps, postcards, T-shirts, and even the human skin as tattoos. -

A second species is here reported from Tahiti, Glycyphana stolata (Fabricius, 1781). P. fusca is also reported from the Marquesas Islands for the first time. IMMEDIATE RELEASE MGM Hosts Macau’s First Food Safety Seminar for Local SMEs with Governmental Departments Various Initiatives Aim to Elevate Macau’s F&B Industry Standards and Competitiveness [June 8, 2016, Macau] MGM hosted the “MGM SME Food Safety Seminar” on June 7, 2016 in collaboration with the Macao Chamber of Commerce, supported by the Macao Economic Services (MCC), Macau Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM), Macau Productivity and Technology Transfer Center (CPTTM), and Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM). Attended by more than 300 participants, the event marks the very first food safety seminar jointly organized by the private and public sectors of Macau. MGM is dedicated to supporting local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and cultivating sustainable partnerships with the community. The objective of this Seminar is to give local SME suppliers in the food and beverage industry a platform to learn about the Food Safety Law and international standards in the purchasing process raised by both the government and the local integrated resort operators. Mr. Cheong Kuai Tat, Head of Food Safety Centre of IACM, emphasized the important obligations of food product manufacturers as listed in the SAR’s Food Safety Law, and a series of supporting programs offered by the Government, such as food safety inspections, guidelines, warning mechanism, and training seminars. Additionally, he introduced the "Food Hygiene Supervisory Incentive Program" to the audience, and encouraged members of the industry to participate in this self-monitoring program at workplace. Meanwhile, Mr. Winston Yeung, Executive Director of Risk and Safety of MGM, introduced the Company’s operations, practices of food safety standards, procurement procedures and more. -

The Diversity of the Family Cetoniidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) of Mountain Ozren (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Research was conducted at six selected localities: Orlovac, Nahorevo, Čavljak, Skakvac, Bukovik and Crepoljsko. After 41 field investigations, 594 individuals were collected and determined as representatives of seven species. Collected data were processed with statistical software Biodiversity Pro and with options Diversity/Compare diversities: Alpha index; Berger-Parker index; Simpsons index; Margaleff index; Mackintosh index; Bray-Curtis Cluster Analysis: Single Link. By comparison of data it was concluded that Skakavac represents the typical locality for southern slopes of Mount Ozren. The species Oxythyrea funesta (Poda, 1761) is the most numerous faunistic element that was found. Nomura URBAN NATURALIST Developing Biodiverse Green Roofs for Japan: Arthropod and Colonizer Plant Diversity on Harappa and Biotope Roofs Ayako Nagase1,*, Yoriyuki Yamada2, Tadataka Aoki2, and Masashi Nomura3 Abstract - Urban biodiversity is an important ecological goal that drives green-roof in- stallation. We studied 2 kinds of green roofs designed to optimize biodiversity benefits: the Harappa (extensive) roof and the Biotope (intensive) roof. The Harappa roof mimics vacant-lot vegetation. It is relatively inexpensive, is made from recycled materials, and features community participation in the processes of design, construction, and mainte- nance. The Biotope roof includes mainly native and host plant species for arthropods, as well as water features and stones to create a wide range of habitats. This study is the first to showcase the Harappa roof and to compare biodiversity on Harappa and Biotope roofs. Arthropod species richness was significantly greater on the Biotope roof. The Harappa roof had dynamic seasonal changes in vegetation and mainly provided habitats for grassland fauna. In contrast, the Biotope roof provided stable habitats for various arthropods. Herein, we outline a set of testable hypotheses for future comparison of these different types of green roofs aimed at supporting urban biodiversity. Introduction Rapid urban growth and associated anthropogenic environmental change have been identified as major threats to biodiversity at a global scale (Grimm et al. 2008, Güneralp and Seto 2013). Green roofs can partially compensate for the loss of green areas by replacing impervious rooftop surfaces and thus, contribute to urban biodiversity (Brenneisen 2006).
