Lohmann Abstract—Phylogenetic relationships of Passiflora subgenus Decaloba were examined using 148 taxa and four molecular markers: nuclear nrITS, ncpGS, cp trnL-F, and ndhF. Relationships of subgenus Decaloba to the other four Passiflora subgenera (Astrophea, Deidamioides, Tetrapathea, andPassiflora) are investigated, as are relationships among the eight supersections within subgenus Decaloba. Results indicate that subgenus Deidamioides is not monophyletic. Subgenus Astrophea + subgenus Deidamioides (section Tryphostemmatoides) together form the most basally branching lineage in the genus, followed by a clade comprised of subgenus Passiflora + subgenus Deidamioides (sections Tetrastylis, Polyanthea, and Deidamioides). Passiflora obovata (subgenus Deidamioides section Mayapathanthus) is resolved as part of subgenus Decaloba.

  • Meiotic Behavior in Wild and Domesticated Species of Passiflora
Revista Brasil. Bot., V.34, n.1, p.63-72, jan.-mar. 2011 Meiotic behavior in wild and domesticated species of Passiflora MARGARETE MAGALHÃES SOUZA1,3 and TELMA NAIR SANTANA PEREIRA2 (received: April 29, 2010; accepted: January 20, 2011) ABSTRACT – (Meiotic behavior in wild and domesticated species of Passiflora). The meiotic behavior of fourteen Passiflora taxa was analyzed. The species were grouped according to the n value (6, 9 and 12) for statistical studies. Some species presented tetravalent associations or univalent chromosomes in diakinesis, bivalent formation prevailing. The qui-square test revealed significant differences in the chiasma frequency among species forn = 9 and n = 6 groups. There was predominance of interstitial chiasmata in almost all studied species. The n = 12 group was the only one whose meiotic behavior was considered similar due to the quantity of chiasmata per cell, tendency of interstitial chiasma localization. Some species presented meiotic irregularities, such as laggard and precocious chromosomes in meiosis I. In telophase II the percentages of meiotic irregularities was low. Irregularities in the spindle orientation were presented in higher percentages in the end of meiosis II, and were also responsible for post-meiotic abnormal products. The irregularities observed during meiosis can have influence on the percentage of sterile pollen grains and success of interspecific crossings inPassiflora species. Accepted 12 April, 2010 Human infections particularly those involving microorganisms that is, bacteria, fungi, viruses, nematodes, can cause serious infections in tropical and subtropical countries of the world. In recent years, multiple drug resistance in human pathogenic microorganisms has been developed due to indiscriminate use of commercial anti-microbial drugs commonly used in the treatment of such diseases. Plants have been the basis of many traditional medicines throughout the world for thousands of years and have continued to provide new remedies to mankind. They are one of the richest sources of bioactive compounds. In India, local empirical knowledge about medicinal properties of plants is the basis for their use as home remedies. It has been generally accepted by many people in India and elsewhere in the world that beneficial medicinal effects can be obtained by ingesting plant products. Passiflora is one of the plants used in Ayurveda for several remedies such as sedative, anxiety and hypertension etc. This review focused on the various virgin areas of research on the Passiflora sp. This study supports the use of traditional medicines (herbal extracts) to cure many diseases like diarrhea, intestinal tract, throat, ear infections, fever and skin diseases. i CRISTINA GURSKI ANATOMIA DE FRUTOS E SEMENTES DE ESPÉCIES DE Passiflora L. – SUBGÊNEROS Decaloba (DC.) RCHB.

  • November Newsletter 2019 from the President
P.O. Box HM 2116, Hamilton, HM JX, Bermuda bermudabotanical.org [email protected] NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2019 FROM THE PRESIDENT: The vegetative devastation following Humberto’s unwelcome visit was quite extraordinary. It was surprising that numerous cedars, survivors of many hurricanes, were badly battered, branches ripped off or trees uprooted. Other trees and vegetation suffered similarly. Our avocado tree was shredded, many other plants defoliated. Discussion followed as to why this hurricane caused such a problem. Various thoughts included the occurrence of many mini twisters; trees were heavy being in full leaf; no rain accompanying the storm. Worrying to think this might become the norm with changing climate patterns and rising sea temperatures. Many thanks to Parks personnel, (Government and Corporations), W&E, and the Regiment for getting something like normalcy restored quite quickly. I was somewhat wryly amused to notice that amongst all the stripped and broken trees and plants, the small, ‘weed’, purslane (Portulaca oleracea), survived totally unscathed! It was interesting to see which plants were first to start putting out leaves again – in my garden Vitex agnus-castus, or Chaste- tree was the first, closely followed by the Citrofortunella mitis, Calamansi (also known as calamondin or Philippine lime). Bird peppers rapidly recovered. Peach trees responded by coming into flower! What did you notice in your garden? Activities A busy couple of months for the BBS. Humberto caused enough damage to the QEII Park that the planned guided walk had to be postponed – hopefully will occur some time in the early part of 2020. The plant sale, in its new location, was quite a success! – more on that from Marlie.
