Please mention that we can be booked to fly at private events, and refer to the above website. “What do you get when you put Chris’ full size Extra together with Mike’s large scale model Extra? ANSWER: The most amazing display team I have ever seen” [UK Airshow Forums] Voted a Top Ten Airshow Moment of 2013 by UK Airshow Review: “Step forward Chris Burkett and Mike Williams, the former flying his Extra 300, the latter remotely piloting his 41% scale model of the Extra 300. This was a display like no-other I’ve ever seen, as both ‘little and large’ flew an aerobatic pairs routine with a precision you simply would not think possible whilst one of the pilots remained on terra firma. Stunningly flown and highly original – exactly what our top ten listing is all about!” [UK Airshow Review] The display sequence is of course subject to weather – these notes give information on a typical full sequence when the cloudbase allows (c. 2000 feet). Display Sequence – Manoeuvres Wherever the runway configuration allows, Chris and Mike take off together; Chris rolling first and further before Mike joins him, offset nearer to the crowdline. Note that in general Mike is flying two and a half times closer to the crowd than Chris. This give the illusion that the two are more evenly matched for size and performance, and it also ensures a separation for safety.

Please mention that we can be booked to fly at private events, and refer to the above website. The display sequence is of course subject to weather – these notes give information on a typical full sequence when the cloudbase allows (c. 2000 feet). Display Sequence – Manoeuvres A diving start, with multiple flick rolls, usually towards the crowd (depending on site). Pull up into a freestyle manoeuvre usually known as a Mulleroid – invented by and named after the Swiss aerobatic champion Eric Muller. His own name for it was the “Zwirbelturm” or “spiralling tower” sometimes referred to as the “helicopter spin” which is also quite descriptive. This is an upward negative flick roll, which is made flatter and flatter until the plane is spinning horizontally at the top with its nose on the horizon, before descending back down in a positive flat spin at full throttle. The next figure is usually an upward tumble with the nose held on the horizon by full rudder plus the effect of torque and precession from the propeller, which keeps the aircraft sideways as it tumbles upwards. At the next pull-up Chris flies a double flick roll at the top of a loop, sometimes known as an avalanche. Instead of continuing the pull he pushes upwards round a full outside loop, quite an uncomfortable manoeuvre with the blood rushing to your head under negative g. At other times Chris’ body will be experiencing 8 positive g and weighing more than half a tonne, hence a regular training programme is important to withstand the extreme forces of unlimited level aerobatics.

AIAA SciTech Forum 10.2514/6.2017-0462 9 - 13 January 2017, Grapevine, Texas 55th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting Requirements Analysis for Design Optimization of Aerobatic Aircraft Darshan Sarojini,∗ Kyle Collins,y Dimitri N Mavrisz Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, 30332, USA Aerobatic aircraft design and simulation is challenging as these aircraft need to fly at any angle of attack and sideslip angle (full-envelope aerodynamics). They fly at velocities close to stall speed, all the way upto the never exceed velocity. These aircraft are also routinely stressed to 6-12 g's in both upright and inverted flight. Presently, most aerobatic aircraft are designed using heuristic knowledge. There is a need for a systematic approach to design aerobatic aircraft in a multi-disciplinary design framework. Towards this goal, this paper presents an extensive study of requirements, metrics and design variables to define a good aerobatic aircraft. First a historical perspective is given to know the current state-of-the- art. Information obtained from regulations, aircraft performance, subject matter experts and analysis of existing aircraft is used to obtain metrics to evaluate. The possible design configurations is given as a morphological matrix. Finally, possible analysis approaches to evaluate the metrics are discussed. Not only must these elite pilots execute a sequence of challenging and complex aerobatic maneuvers requiring their bodies to endure up to plus or minus 10 times the force of gravity, they must do it while staying within a small cube of airspace. Most importantly, the maneuvers must be flown with great precision, with points deducted for even the slightest deviation from perfection. Such a demanding environment requires the utmost in piloting skill, dedicated and consistent practice and training, and the best aero- batic aircraft technology available. These pilots are constantly on the lookout for more capable aircraft, as even the slightest advance in performance can give them an edge on the competition.
