Rudolf Rasch the Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani Discography Rudolf Rasch: The Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani Discography Rudolf Rasch The Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani Discography Please refer to this document in the following way: Rudolf Rasch, The Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani: Discography https://geminiani.sites.uu.nl For remarks, suggestions, additions and corrections: [email protected] © Rudolf Rasch, Utrecht/Houten, 2018 21 August 2019 1 Rudolf Rasch: The Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani Discography DISCOGRAPHY INTRODUCTION The works composed by Francesco Geminiani are recorded by a great many ensembles and musicians, roughly so since the 1950s. These recordings are precious documents for the study of the performance practice and the reception history of Geminiani’s work. This inventory of these recordings is organized along the lines of the “Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani”. For each work are, as far as applicable, first listed the complete recordings, followed by a listing of recordings that contains one or more selected compositions of the works. There are three kinds of descriptions. Full descriptions, containing information about title, label, year, barcode, musicians, recording site and time, contents, text and cover, are given for all recordings that contain a complete Work of Geminiani. If the recording includes compositions from more than one Work, the full description is given once, usually in connection with the Work that figures most prominently on the recording. If there is no “prominent Work” then the full description is given in connection with the Work that comes first in our sequence of Works. Partial descriptions are provided for the Works or compositions that do not belong to the most prominent Work, with a reference where the full description is found. A partial description lists title, label, year, barcode, musicians and contents. Short descriptions are given for recordings that contain one or some compositions by Geminiani along with works by other composers. They are found in sections labelled “Selected Concertos (Sonatas, Compositions)” that follow the sections with “Complete Recordings”. Short descriptions contain information about title, label, year, barcode, musicians, contents as far as Geminiani’s works are concerned and a list of other composers whose music is found on the recording. This inventory does not claim any kind of completeness. 2 Rudolf Rasch: The Thirty-One Works of Francesco Geminiani Discography: Work One: The Violin Sonatas of 1716 Work One: The Violin Sonatas of 1716 Selected Sonatas Title LP Francesco Geminiani: The Complete Sonatas Op. 1 Label Somm (UK) SOMMCD 248-2 Year 2012. Ma Lugano Rancate un simile marchio di valore è da concedersi soltanto a vini, formaggi e salamelle? • Early Music Review EDITIONS of MUSIC Here Are Thirteen Works in the Present Volume
Early Music Review EDITIONS OF MUSIC here are thirteen works in the present volume. The first two are masses by John Bedingham, while the others are anonymous mass movements (either New from Stainer & Bell T single or somehow related). Previous titles in the series have been reviewed by Clifford Bartlett, and I confess this English Thirteenth-century Polyphony is the first time I have looked at repertory from this period A Facsimile Edition by William J. Summers & Peter M. since I studied Du Fay at university! At that time I also Lefferts sang quite a lot of (slightly later) English music, so I am not Stainer & Bell, 2016. Early English Church Music, 57 completely unfamiliar with it. I was immediately struck 53pp+349 plates. by the rhythmic complexity and delighted to see that the ISMN 979 0 2202 2405 8; ISBN 978 0 85249 940 5 editions preserve the original note values and avoids bar £180 lines - one might expect this to complicate matters with ligatures and coloration to contend with, but actually it is his extraordinarily opulent volume (approx. 12 laid out in such a beautiful way that everything miraculously inches by 17 and weighing more than seven pounds makes perfect sense. Most of the pieces are in two or three T- apologies for the old school measurements!) is a parts (a fourth part – called “Tenor bassus” – is added to marvel to behold. The publisher has had to use glossy paper the Credo of Bedingham’s Mass Dueil angoisseux in only in order to give the best possible colour reproductions of one of the sources).

  • 1 Francesco Geminiani
Francesco Geminiani: Opera Omnia Volume 5. 6 Sonatas Op. 5 (versions for cello and basso continuo H. 103-108; for violin and basso continuo H. 109-114). Christopher Hogwood, editor. Ut Orpheus Edizioni, 2010 (112 pp. clothbound). “Although Geminiani (1687‐1762) was held to be the equal of Corelli in his own day—and indeed thought by some to be superior to his contemporary Handel in instrumental composition—his considerable output of music and didactic writings has only been available in piecemeal fashion, much of it never reissued since his lifetime except in facsimile, and thus largely inaccessible to modern performers. This lack of material designed for practical performance has concealed the enormous originality he showed both in writing and re‐writing his own music, and that of Corelli. Francesco Geminiani Opera Omnia rectifies this omission with the first uniform and accurate scholarly edition of all versions of his music and writings in a form that allows pertinent comparison and reevaluation.” So opens the general preface to this first volume (of seventeen) in Ut Orpheus’ complete Geminiani Edition, and a more felicitous introduction it would be difficult to imagine. For a composer of such importance, particularly one whose limited output stands well within the logistical and economic constraints of the music publishing industry, his neglect has been astonishing. Until the period instrument movement got going in the past several decades, this was also true of Geminiani’s representation on recordings‐‐a fact that resulted in a particularly amusing episode from my own personal wanderings through the sometimes strange world of classical music collecting and appreciation.
