DOCUMENTS ON GERMAN FOREIGN POLICY ' 1918-1945 from tbe Brcbt"es of tbe ~erman jforeign .Ministtl2 Series D Volume I FROM NEURATH TO RIBBENTROP September 1 9 3 7 • September 19 3 8 LONDON HIS MAJESTY'S STATIONERY OFFICE In June 1946 the British Foreign Office and the United States Department of State agreed jointly to publish documents from captured archives of the German Foreign Ministry and the Reich Chancellery. Although the main body of the captured archives goes back to the year 1867, it was decided· to limit the present publication to papers relating to the years after 1918, since the object of the publication was" to establish the record of German foreign policy preceding and du:ing World War II". The editorial work was to be performed " on the basis of the highest scholarly objectivity". The editors were to have complete freedom in the selection of the documents to be published. Publication was to begin and be concluded as soon as possible. In April1947 the French Government, having requested the right to participate in the project, accepted the terms of this agree ment. The documents covering the period from July 1936 to the outbreak of War in September 1939 have now been selected jointly by the three Allied Editorial Staffs. They comprise six volumes, and form the first and larger portion of Series D, which will carry the history of German foreign relations to the end of the Second World War. Volume I, the present volume, deals with Germany's foreign policy from the end of September 1937 to September 1938, covering particularly the seizure of Austria in March 1938. -

The first is dismissed as provincial, rigid, and bureaucratic, while the latter is repeatedly characterized as global, flexible, and dynamic. Yet, closer observation and analysis reveal hidden links and layers, and substantial preoccupation by both legal and art practitioners in the visual and in the judicial. It is through the unraveling of spaces, gaps, and lacunae in which both fields of practice and knowledge intersect that this publication sets in motion an exploration of influences and interactions between law and art. Offering a new critical approach and methodology to deal with existing and imagined relations between law and art, this publication analyzes curatorial and artistic projects by revealing overlooked legal dimensions embedded within them. It introduces legal theory and scholarship in relation to visual artworks in order to expand and foster new paths for both judicial and visual activism. Based on the reassessment of artistic and curatorial capabilities and encounters in a time of globalization, it is concerned with broadening our perception of the role of art and legal practitioners with regard to justice. -

The Hungarian invasion as the lieux de memoire of Middle Age in the Holy Roman Empire, AAC 47: 169–197. The Hungarian invasions and especially the victories over the Magyars near Riade and on the Lechfeld rank among the lieux de memoire of modern Germany. Historians postulate several times that the common defence against the Magyars stimulated an early German national consciousness. Analysis of a multitude of high and late medieval texts shows that the Hungarian invasions made in deed a contribution on early German national identity. But it was not the repeated and final common triumph but the common trauma of being victim during a long epoch of cruelties com- mitted by those nomads and the consciousness of eventual common survival that formed the meaning of this medieval lieu de memoire. The first date marks in general the transition point from the mediaeval lodgings of the nobility to the princely palaces of the Early Modern era in the Germanspeaking lands. These palaces are the result of largescale construction campaigns, such as in Dresden (from 1468), MeiBen (from 1470/71), Ingolstadt (from 1479), Halle anderSaale (1484), Wittenberg (from 1489) or Salzburg (ca. 1495). From this time onwards, the internal structures of German court residences are much better known than in earlier eras. The second date, 1547, marks the caesura of the Schmalkaldic War, in the aftermath of which the electoral dignity in Saxony was transferred to the new Saxon Prince Elector Maurice in Dresden. It provided the impetus for the construction of a magnificent palace in the new Saxon residential city, setting new benchmarks of excellence for princely residences in the Old Empire. During the period in question, we find an architectonic innovation in German palaces that has to date been given but scant scholarly attention: the formation and establishment of an architectural symmetry or parity of the personal living quarters of ruling princes and prin cesses. -

Utopian Realities 100 Years of Now with Alexandra Kollontai 12.–22.1.2017 With “Utopian Realities – 100 Years of Now with Alexandra Kollontai” HAU Hebbel am Ufer inquires into the topicality of political and artistic developments that be- came possible for a few years following the 1917 Russian Revolutions. It liberated utopian thinking by bringing it from a distant dream into the effective realm of everyday life. The first attempts to create a new world were made, but the poten- tial of the political upheaval turned into its opposite in Stalinism only a few years after the revolution. What is the significance of the utopias of that time, and don’t many of these past ideas still appear future to us today? As part of the four-year project “100 Years of Now” by the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, HAU is working with international artists to present four new productions, two different discussion formats, a music programme and installations, which will look backward to measure the distance to the past in order to understand current society in its political form and to up- date its own positionings. The work, the writings, and the life of Alexandra Kol- lontai (1872-1952) are the productive inspiration here. The Soviet revolutionary and feminist turned the body, love and sexuality into a political topic, developing new models of family and educational policy. Utopian Realities is a co-production of HAU Hebbel am Ufer and Haus der Kulturen der Welt and takes place as part of “100 Years of Now”.
