    Draft CHAPTER 14 Lavender Sweep Area Lavender Sweep today presents as countless other Battersea streets of three-up, three-down terraced houses of the 1880s. Its origins, though, lie a century earlier, its distinctive crescent layout the creation of Peter James Bennett, a developer of the 1780s. Though the five rus-in-urbe villas he built there have gone, the outlines of their spacious grounds between Lavender Hill and Battersea Rise, running west to St John’s Road and east to Lavender Walk, can still be traced in the streets laid out by his Victorian successors. Immediately east of Bennett’s estate were two even larger villas, begun in the 1770s on another landholding: West Lodge (also demolished) and the Shrubbery, the only one of this area’s old houses to survive. From the 1860s they too lost their long gardens to denser housing. These Georgian estates and their subsequent redevelopment form the subject of this chapter (Ills 14.1, 2). Altenburg Gardens, the first of the speculative builders’ houses to go up, in the 1860s, perhaps enhanced the old-world charm of the earlier villas and their wealthy mercantile owners as much as they threatened it. They were very large suburban dwellings in a classical style, aimed at a high class of tenant, in an area still noted for its sylvan character. But behind this advance guard a very different and breathless wave of development came in the 1880s—dense terraces aimed at the lower-middle and working classes. Only the double-fronted houses of Lavender Gardens, built in the grounds of the Shrubbery, suggested any social ambition.

Hereford ii University of Washington Abstract Sleep, Sickness, and Spirituality: Altered States and Victorian Visions of Femininity in British and American Art, 1850-1915 Kimberly E. Hereford Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Susan Casteras Art History This dissertation examines representations in art of the Victorian woman in “altered states.” Though characterized in Victorian art in a number of ways, women are most commonly stereotyped as physically listless and mentally vacuous. The images examined show the Victorian female in a languid and at times reclining or supine pose in these representations. In addition, her demeanor implies both emotional and physical depletion, and there is both a pronounced abandonment of the physical and a collapsing effect, as if all mental faculties are withdrawing inward. Each chapter is dedicated to examining one of these distinct but interrelated types of femininity that flourished throughout British and American art from c. 1850 to c. 1910. The chapters for this dissertation are organized sequentially to demonstrate a selected progression of various states of consciousness, from the most obvious (the sleeping woman) to iii the more nuanced (the female Aesthete and the female medium). In each chapter, there is the visual perception of the Victorian woman as having access to otherworldly conditions of one form or another.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/ah.343 RESEARCH ARTICLE The Life and Death of Residential Room Types: A Study of Swedish Building Plans, 1750–2010 Mattias Kärrholm While the study of building types is a well-known and relatively active research field, the topic of room types is less explored. This article takes a broad approach to spatial categorization, enabling the examina- tion of different types of spaces over longer periods. How do different room types evolve and die? How do the different residential room types relate to each other? Do they act alone or do they follow each other over time? The article looks at the particular evolution and development of Swedish residential room types and is based on the study of plans of 2,340 Swedish buildings from about 1750 to 2010. Six themes emerged from this study: thresholds of birth and extinction, abruptive change, the relation between absent and present room types, contagious types, different temporal scales and the stabilization of prototypical sets.
