The park’s saproxylic beetle fauna, associated with dead wood and veteran trees, can be considered as nationally important. Abstract The post-copulatory behaviour of Calopteryx splendens females was studied under field and laboratory conditions. After termination of copulation females usually perch and bend the abdomen so that its apex touches the ground (post-copulatory posture). The post-cop ulatory posture is a consequence of sperm removal by males. Male and female microstruc tures (spines and scales) interact to move previous sperm from the female sperm storage organs to the outside during copulation stage I, after which moved sperm is located on the ovipositor. After termination of copulation females require an average of 45 seconds to brush off this sperm (N=21). The post-copulatory behaviour of females may also allow males to chase rival males before the females start to oviposit (prevention of dis turbances). The present study shows no evidence of cryptic female choice in C. splendens. Introduction Sperm competition in Odonata has resulted in the evolution of direct sperm removal in Zygoptera and Anisoptera. Sperm removal resulting in last male sperm precedence seems to be widespread in Zygoptera (Waage 1979a, 1984, 1986; Miller & Miller 1981; Fincke 1984; Siva-Jothy & Tsubaki 1989; Cordero & Miller 1992; Siva-Jothy & Hooper 1995). -

Insect larval development affects adult traits but the biometric relationships are usually poorly understood, including large odonates. In this study, measurements of morphological traits of larvae, exuviae and adults of Anax imperator were recorded. They were used to investigate the effects of early development on adult morphology. Results showed an increase in larval length during the fi nal instar and the length of its exuviae signifi cantly exceeded that of the larva. Length and body mass of teneral adults were strongly related to the length of their exuviae. Adult males were signifi cantly longer than adult females, while both had the same body mass at emergence. Length of teneral adults was negatively related to the date of emergence in both sexes. During maturation, body mass of males only increased slightly whereas that of females increased greatly. Mature specimens were also signifi cantly longer than teneral individuals. -

Cheshire Wildlife Trust Heteroptera and Diptera surveys on the Manchester Mosses with PANTHEON analysis by Phil Brighton 32, Wadeson Way, Croft, Warrington WA3 7JS [email protected] on behalf of Lancashire and Cheshire Wildlife Trusts Version 1.0 September 2018 Lancashire Wildlife Trust Page 1 of 35 Abstract This report describes the results of a series of surveys on the Manchester mosslands covering heteroptera (shield bugs, plant bugs and allies), craneflies, hoverflies, and a number of other fly families. Sites covered are the Holcroft Moss reserve of Cheshire Wildlife Trust and the Astley, Cadishead and Little Woolden Moss reserves of Lancashire Wildlife Trust. A full list is given of the 615 species recorded and their distribution across the four sites. This species list is interpreted in terms of feeding guilds and habitat assemblages using the PANTHEON software developed by Natural England. This shows a strong representation in the sample of species associated with shaded woodland floor and tall sward and scrub. The national assemblage of peatland species is somewhat less well represented, but includes a higher proportion of rare or scarce species. A comparison is also made with PANTHEON results for similar surveys across a similar range of habitats in the Delamere Forest. This suggests that the invertebrate diversity value of the Manchester Mosses is rather less, perhaps as a result of their fragmented geography and proximity to past and present sources of transport and industrial pollution. Introduction The Manchester Mosses comprise several areas of lowland bog or mire embedded in the flat countryside between Warrington and Manchester. They include several areas designated as SSSIs in view of the highly distinctive and nationally important habitat, such as Risley Moss, Holcroft Moss, Bedford Moss, and Astley Moss. -

However, the morphological identification was in agreement with the one produced by the BOLD. The results of this study is a demonstration of how, in some cases, the DNA- based identification does not provide a conclusive species designation and that a morphology-based identification is needed. -

Banacha 12/16, 90-237 Łódź, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The data on two empidid genera from the Pieniny Mts. (Outer Western Carpathians, S Poland) are presented. In total 31 species belonging to eight subgenera of Empis and six subgenera of Rhamphomyia were recorded in this study. Among them 28 species are new for this massif, including spe- cies known as rare in Poland: Empis albinervis MEIGEN, 1822, E. melanotricha LOEW, 1873, Rhamphomyia flava (FAllÉN, 1816), R. hybotina ZETTERSTEDT, 1838, R. spinipes (FALLEN, 1816), R. stigmosa MACQUART, 1827, R. sulcatina COLLIN, 1926, and R. trigemina OLDENBERG, 1927. One species, Rhamphomyia bohemica BARTAK et KUBIK, 2012 has been recorded in Poland for the first time. Łącznie z nowymi mującymi muchówki zarówno małe, jak i duże notowaniami z terenu naszego kraju wykazano (2–14 mm długości). Razem z rodzajem Hilara 82 gatunki z rodzaju Empis, reprezentujące 12 pod- Meigen, 1822 przynależą do podrodziny Empi- rodzajów, natomiast z rodzaju Rhamphomyia – dinae. -

May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males. -

Kielb and Mark F. O'Brien 1 ABSTRACT Anax longipes is a large aeshnid dragonfly previously unknown from Michigan. Adults and larvae were found in abundance at a series of experi mental ponds within the E.S. George Reserve in Livingston County, Michi gan. Anax longipes Hagen was previously undocumented from Michigan (Kor mondy 1958), and is rarely encountered in the Great Lakes Region (Glotzhober 1995, Kielb 1996, Tennessen 1992). The species is widely distrib uted throughout the eastern United States, from Massachusetts to Wisconsin and south to Florida, with scattered records from southern Ontario, Canada (Dunkle 1989).
