Anderson Introduction Zimbabwe (formerly known as Rhodesia) shares a history common to most of Africa: years of colonization by a European power, followed by a war for independence and subsequent autocratic rule by a leader in that fight for independence. Zimbabwe is, however, unique in that it was once the most diverse and promising economy on the continent. In spite of its historical potential, today Zimbabwe ranks third worst in the world in “Indicators of Instability” leading the world in Human Flight, Uneven Development, and Economy, while ranking high in each of the remaining eight categories tracked (see figure below)1. Zimbabwe is experiencing a “brain drain” with the emigration of doctors, engineers, and agricultural experts, the professionals that are crucial to revitalizing the Zimbabwean economy2. ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: CLASSIFYING BIAS IN LARGE MULTILINGUAL CORPORA VIA CROWDSOURCING AND TOPIC MODELING Team BIASES: Brianna Caljean, Katherine Calvert, Ashley Chang, Elliot Frank, Rosana Garay Jáuregui, Geoffrey Palo, Ryan Rinker, Gareth Weakly, Nicolette Wolfrey, William Zhang Thesis Directed By: Dr. David Zajic, Ph.D. Our project extends previous algorithmic approaches to finding bias in large text corpora. We used multilingual topic modeling to examine language-specific bias in the English, Spanish, and Russian versions of Wikipedia. In particular, we placed Spanish articles discussing the Cold War on a Russian-English viewpoint spectrum based on similarity in topic distribution. We then crowdsourced human annotations of Spanish Wikipedia articles for comparison to the topic model. Our hypothesis was that human annotators and topic modeling algorithms would provide correlated results for bias. However, that was not the case. Our annotators indicated that humans were more perceptive of sentiment in article text than topic distribution, which suggests that our classifier provides a different perspective on a text’s bias. Finding XH 903 – 33 Squadron’s Gloster Javelin at the Jet Age Museum Gloucestershire Airport, Saturday 4 August 2018 On a very hot Saturday afternoon last weekend, thus the relaxed but appropriate ‘Hart’s Head’ attire worn in some of the following photographs, I paid a visit to the excellent and informative Jet Age Museum at Gloucestershire Airport to investigate the story of the Gloster Javelin bearing 33 Squadron colours that appeared in the recent ‘Loyalty’ newsletter. Accompanied by close friend George Philp, a retired Squadron Leader, my Crewman Leader in Germany while I was on the other squadron, keen aviation buff and a member of the Jet Age Museum, we received a very friendly welcome from the staff at the front desk and all of the guides in the Display Hall, especially as the reason for the visit became apparent. 33 Squadron flew the two seat Javelin, Britain’s first delta wing all-weather fighter, in the Cold War-era between July 1958 and November 1962. The Javelin was equipped with interception radar, had an operational ceiling of 52 000 feet (almost 16 000 metres) and a speed of more than 700 mph (1 130 km/h). Armed with four 30mm cannons and, later, four Firestreak missiles it was built to intercept Russian bombers. Javelin first flew on 26 November 1951 and Gloster and its sister company, Armstrong Whitworth, would go on to build 435 aircraft for the RAF. Unfortunately, the Javelin was the last aircraft type that Gloster would produce and in 1963 the Gloster name disappeared completely from the list of British aircraft manufacturers as a result of the 1957 White Paper on Defence produced by Minister of Defence Duncan Sandys, in which, to counter the growing Soviet ballistic missile threat, he proposed a radical shift away from manned fighter aircraft in favour of missile technology, along with a rationalisation of the British military aircraft and engine industry. -

NMRN Master Narrative Ours is the epic story of the Royal Navy, its impact on Britain and the world from its origins in 625 A.D. to the present day. We will tell this emotionally-coloured and nuanced story, one of triumph and achievement as well as failure and muddle, through four key themes:- People. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s people. We examine the qualities that distinguish people serving at sea: courage, loyalty and sacrifice but also incidents of ignorance, cruelty and cowardice. We trace the changes from the amateur ‘soldiers at sea’, through the professionalization of officers and then ships’ companies, onto the ‘citizen sailors’ who fought the World Wars and finally to today’s small, elite force of men and women. We highlight the change as people are rewarded in war with personal profit and prize money but then dispensed with in peace, to the different kind of recognition given to salaried public servants. Increasingly the people’s story becomes one of highly trained specialists, often serving in branches with strong corporate identities: the Royal Marines, the Submarine Service and the Fleet Air Arm. We will examine these identities and the Royal Navy’s unique camaraderie, characterised by simultaneous loyalties to ship, trade, branch, service and comrades. Purpose. We tell the story of the Royal Navy’s roles in the past, and explain its purpose today. Using examples of what the service did and continues to do, we show how for centuries it was the pre-eminent agent of first the British Crown and then of state policy throughout the world. -

Salutation Greetings all ouens and crows, from various Africa branches, to another edition of “The Sitrep”. A final edition, for 2019, is planned for December – perhaps to include a bit more humour and news before the “silly season” reaches its conclusion Rhodesian Forces Memorial Service – Sunday 10 November 2019 Hearty congratulations must be poured upon the Rhodesian Forces Memorial Committee who organised, and ran, an outstanding show at Dickie Fritz the day before Independence. This was not the first of such gatherings and particular attention had been paid to ironing-out past “niggles”. It was the third invitation for Rhodesian High Schools to lay a wreath on behalf of their school, in honour of those fallen during the war years. Twenty-seven schools were represented this year, whereas, only 17 were present at the 2017 ceremony – a sure sign of the increasing popularity of the event. Wing Cdr Bruce Harrison, Alan Strachan and Padre Bill Beer. MC for the day was none other than Wing Cdr Bruce Harrison whose sense of presence never fails to instil an atmosphere of relaxation and family unity, despite the formalities about to unfold. The Rhodesian Forces Memorial Committee is chaired by Alan Strachan who delivered the welcome – followed by prayers, led Lt Col Bill Dodgen, lesson delivered by Alf Herbst and the sermon conducted by Padre Bill Beer. Steve Prophet (RhAF) showed us how to sing “Amazing Grace” – properly, before Marcus Main-Baillie (RhAF) “turned the pages” to read random snippets of those who fell, whilst serving with various units, during the bush-war – not forgetting members of the general Rhodesian population and the animals that perished in the conflict. -

SOPWITH AND HAWKER AT THE HAM FACTORY, NORTH KINGSTON The National Aircraft Factory No.2 was built through the winter of 1917 by the Ministry of Munitions and leased by Sopwith Aviation to more than double their production capacity The factory which stood near Ham Common on the road between Kingston and Richmond was built in 26 weeks. It was one of four huge factories in a scheme where contractors would make aircraft under licence but Sopwith leased this one to build their own products. From April 1918 hundreds of Sopwith fighter aircraft were being built at Ham Sopwith Snipes, Dolphins and Salamanders were built in large numbers but, when the war ended a year earlier than predicted, many orders were cancelled leaving huge stocks of unwanted components. Sopwith’s offer to buy the factory was refused by the Government and it was sold for £227,000 to Leyland Motors In 1948 Leyland Motors sold the Ham factory to Hawker Aircraft Ltd who needed a large factory in which to build their new jet aircraft designs By the late 1940s the Canbury Park Road Kingston Factory was unsuitable for modern aircraft design and construction and Hawker Aircraft’s Langley satellite factory was too close to the new Heathrow airport. The Company considered moving completely to a large factory in Blackpool before approaching Leyland Motors to buy the Ham Factory occupied by Sopwith Aviation 30 years earlier. The price was agreed at £585,000. Through the 1950s Hawker Hunters were in “Super Priority” production at Ham for the Royal Air Force and other NATO forces With the Cold War at its height the Government and NATO gave “Super Priority” status to Hunter production at the Ham factory and also at Hawker’s satellite factory at Blackpool and Armstrong Whitworth’s at Bagginton, Coventry. -
