FAMILY NITIDULIDAE (Sap beetles) J. McNamara One hundred species of Nitidulidae occur in Canada and Alaska. Members of this family are mostly saprophagous and mycetophagous. The majority of them live in decaying fruit, fermenting plant juice and in fungi, but some also live in flowers. Some species breed in the nests of bumblebees and others in carrion. The larvae of some species prey on scolytids; the larvae of other species are considered fungivorous and the larvae of Cateretinae live in seed capsules of various plants with the adults of these species feeding on the pollen and petals of the same plants or sometimes of others. Parsons (1943) published a revision of the Nearctic Nitidulidae and most western species can be keyed out also using Hatch (1962). ABSTRACT This paper deals with the Coleoptera Nitidulidae and Kateretidae collected in Sardinia during the surveys organized by Centro Nazionale per lo Studio e la Conservazione della Biodiversità Forestale "Bosco Fontana" of Verona in 2003–2008, with a few selected additional data collected on the island by the author during entomological trips carried out in 1982–2008, and by several Italian and European entomologists in the last few decades. The paper is also completed with the updated checklist of the species so far recorded from the island, including those based on a few unpublished data or extracted from recently examined material. 79 species (73 Nitidulidae, including 10 the presence of which is based only on very doubtful ancient records, and 6 Kateretidae) are listed for Sardinia. The updated list includes two species endemic to the Corso-Sardinian System: Sagittogethes nuragicus (Audisio & Jelínek, 1990), and Thymogethes foddaii (Audisio, De Biase & Trizzino, 2009) n. comb. Sagittogethes minutus (C. Brisout de Barneville, 1872) is recorded for the fi rst time from continental Italy (SE Calabria). Key words: Nitidulidae, Kateretidae, Sardinia, faunistics. -

Twenty-seven species (35% of the Wisconsin fauna) represent new state records, having never been previously recorded from the state. Wisconsin distribution, along with relevant collecting techniques and natural history information, are summarized. The Wisconsin nitidulid and kateretid faunae are compared to reconstructed and updated faunal lists for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and south-central Canada. -
Profile Infestation with the Small Hive Beetle (Aethina Tumida)
Infestation with the Small Hive Beetle (Aethina tumida) Susceptible species The small hive beetle (Aethina tumida) is a pest of honey bees (Apis mellifera). In its larval stage the small hive beetle feeds on brood, pollen and honey and can thus damage the bee colony. Bumblebees and stingless bees can serve as alternative hosts; for solitary bees this is still unclear. The beetle does not represent a human health risk. Distribution area Originally, the small hive beetle occurs in Africa, south of the Sahara. By worldwide trade with honey bees, the beetle was introduced to America and Australia around the turn of the millenium, where it spread rapidly over large areas. Meanwhile, it has been reported at least once on all continents except the Antarctic. In spite of EU-wide import restrictions, Aethina tumida was detected in Calabria, Southern Italy, in September 2014; all attempts to eradicate have been unsuccessful. Causative agent The dark-brown to black small hive beetle belongs to the family of sap beetles (Nitidulidae). The adult beetle has about a third of the size of a honey bee (approx. 5mm long, 3mm wide). Fertilized females lay eggs in crevices inside the hive; they may also bite holes into cell cappings and walls to lay their eggs directly into the brood cells. The white to beige larvae emerge after one to three days. After another ten to fourteen days they reach the so-called wandering stage (approx. 10 mm long), leave the hive, and pupate in the soil. At warm summer temperatures the new generation emerges approx. -

Species in the genus Carpophilus are the most commonly encountered and are considered nuisance pests around pineapple fields and canneries (Illingworth, 1929; Schmidt, 1935; Hinton, 1945). The remaining species are less frequently encountered and are not considered to be impor- tant pests. We report 2 new state records, 5 new island records, and 4 taxonomic changes for the adventive sap beetles in Hawai`i. Abstract Data are presented on the attraction of nitidulid beetles (primarily Carpophilus spp.) to synthetic aggregation pheromone, pheromone plus fermenting bread dough or dough alone. in an apricot orchard in southern New South Wales during November· March. The combination of pheromone and bread dough was significantly more effective than either type of bait alone. Synthetic pheromone of Carpophilus hemiplerus (L.) increased attraction of this species to dough by 115 times. Low order (1.7·3.2 times increase) cross·attraction of Carpophi/us mutilatus Erichson. Carpophi/us davidsoni Dobson and Carpophilus (Urophorus) humeralis (F.) also occurred to the combination. Synthetic pheromone of C. mUlilatus increased the attraction of this species to dough by up to 17 times and appeared to be most effective early in the season. C. davidsoni and C. humeralis also responded to this pheromone (1.6·5.6 times increase). All species showed some cross-attraction to synthetic pheromones of three North American Carpophilus spp. The potential for using synthetic pheromones in the management of nitidulid beetles in stone fruit orchards is discussed.
