I am very aware that there are many people in this room far better qualified than I to speak about Owen, but I hope that I can voice for you something of the qualities people found in our friend and something of the task which he would have us continue to pursue in this divided land and on this fragile planet at the beginning of the Third Millennium. I first met Owen on a Christian CND march to Molesworth in 1985. It was a great encouragement as a greenhorn peace campaigner about to head off to Rome to spend 6 years as a square peg in the round hole of seminary life to discover that there was a priest willing to spend Holy Week not in church but on the road, being Church and bringing Church to people with the most varied views and lifestyles.

  • Shrewsbury Catholic Cathedral: Access Awarded £281,000 in March 2015 Towards a £380,000 Project
Shrewsbury Catholic Cathedral: Access Awarded £281,000 in March 2015 towards a £380,000 project The need There was a long-standing problem of unsafe access to the cathedral’s main entrance. The stairs were too steep and therefore rarely used for fear of injury or accident, and there was no provision for wheelchair users. Outcomes The cathedral is now accessible to all, safer for the public and much more inviting to visitors and worshippers. The area will not need further work apart from routine maintenance for a long time. New entrance to Shrewsbury Cathedral. Photo credit: Arrol and Snell Architects. Economic and social impact The project supported local metal workers and stonemasons and two apprentices were employed. Those working on the project were challenged and extended their skills in specialist labour techniques. The number of visitors to the cathedral has increased from 6,000 per year to 2,000 to 3,000 per month since the project was completed and a team of stewards has been recruited to welcome them. The cathedral has also set up a café and restaurant for visitors making it more of an attraction, and is now used for large Diocesan events. The public are increasingly using the new external porch space, which incorporates a war memorial shrine: people passing who would not necessarily go into the cathedral will now stop at the shrine and can readily get to it. Works completed and timescale The project involved dismantling the side walls of the central porch to allow construction of new steps and a platform lift.

Please send diary dates to [email protected] REV. CURRY’S SERMON AT THE ROYAL WEDDING SUMMED UP WHY I AM A CHRISTIAN Jon Kuhrt 19 May 2018 There has been an incredible reaction to Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon at the Royal Wedding today. Both the content and the manner of his talk broke the formality which so easily straight-jackets Anglican services and especially any religious events involving the Royalty. There was power, authority and a bold confidence in the way that Bishop Curry spoke. As the world listened to him, I realised he was summing up why I am a Christian. He spoke personally – so often, vicars, priests and ministers can lose people with religious jargon or abstract terms, but straightaway Rev Curry connected the theme of his talk to the experience of everyone listening:“There’s power – power in love. If you don’t believe me, think about a time when you first fell in love. The whole world seemed to centre around you and your beloved.” He spoke passionately – there was an urgency to his words as he spoke about a power (or fire) that was desperately needed if we are to heal the world we live in. It was not overly intellectualised but rooted in an urgent struggle for justice and change: “The late Dr Martin Luther King, Jr.
